Physical Description

Genesect is an insectoid Pokémon that stands at 4'11" tall. Though it originated as another Pokémon, its cybernetic enhancements have been so major that it has been considered its own new species of Pokémon. Its body is entirely covered in a strong and durable steel alloy painted purple and grey. The head is large and wide, with two red eyes on the front, two black holes on the top of the head and a large artificial grin in between the eyes. The eyes have two pupils each and are seemingly artificial. Its forearms are made of two segments, connected to two arms with metal claws at their ends. Attatched to its abdomen are its legs, which appear to be entirely artificial. The lower leg has the ability so slide up at the knee to retract into the thighs. Attached to its back is a large cannon with a rim that covers most of its body - giving it the appearance of a carapace. The nozzle is able to retract into the cannon, and a slot on the back allows a Drive to be inserted and ejected via a button on top.

Much of Genesect's internal biology is made of machinery and cybernetics. The cannon on the back is wired directly into the brain, allowing it to be controlled like it were a natural body part. The brain is modified with microcomputers and implants that boost the creature's intellect to help it "keep up" with the smarter Pokémon of the modern age. Its muscles are augmented with small but powerful hydraulics that allow it to move faster and hit harder. The eyes grant Genesect both binocular and peripheral vision, and its eyesight is 20/20 in both regards. The eyes are also equipped with biological scanners - scanning a target's defenses prompts a battle computer to either boost weapon power or boost hydraulic strength, depending on which kind of defense (physical or special) is weaker. The cannon and abdomen contain antigravity devices, allowing Genesect to fly and levitate. What little remains of Genesect's organic being is known to include an organ that uses protein and energy to create silk fired from small guns in its claws, commonly used to make nests.

Little is known of the physical appearance of the ancient Pokémon that was used to make Genesect - all that is known is that its fossilised arm appears identical to the armored variants seen on Genesect. Though Genesect appears to have once had a gender, the modifications done to it have removed all reproductive organs, preventing it from breeding.

Lore and History

Much of what is known of Genesect comes from former members of its creator: Team Plasma, in particular a scientist named Dudley, who was a key player in the creation of the Pokémon. Though he is rarely seen nowadays, he has been known to frequently visit Team Plasma's abandoned P2 Laboratory complex.

Genesect started life as an unknown species of Bug-type Pokémon that dates all the way back to the Paleozoic period - specifically, 300 million years ago. Comparing Genesect's capabilities to those of contemporary predator Kabutops show that back then it was one of the strongest and most fierce hunters of the era. It has been theorised by historians that this Pokémon is the reason behind the mass extinction of several Pokémon who lived back then. How the Pokémon ultimately went extinct is unknown - though the relative scarcity of fossilised remains of it compared to those of other extinct Pokémon would seem to suggest that either the species was limited in number back then, or that what killed them was destructive enough to have annihilated a large majority.

300 million years later, a fossil of the Pokémon was discovered by the anti-Pokémon Trainer group, Team Plasma. Analysing the fossil and noticing the Pokémon's apparent power and mercilessness back then, it was decided that its capabilities would be enhanced further with modern technology, thus creating the most powerful Pokémon of all. And so began Project G - and the resulting Pokémon was to be codenamed "Genesect" (early documents suggest it was intitially codenamed "Genosect", but was hastily renamed after it was realised such a name would offend Team Plasma's king, N, by implying the Pokémon was made to be a weapon - "which it was, let's be honest here"). Within Team Plasma's secret laboratory (dubbed the "P2 Laboratory"), the Pokémon was revived by Team Plasma's scientists, led and supervised by Dudley, and was subsequentially subjected to a number of surgical procedures to enhance its capabilities, such as augmenting its muscles with powerful hydraulics, welding powerful steel armor onto its body and boosting its intelligence with brain implants and microcomputers.

While a cannon (nicknamed the "Techno Buster") intended to be planted onto its back was being developed, N visited the laboratory to see how the project was going. According to a scientist present there, "Lord N saw Genesect, and he just... stared, as did it to him. His face was visibly shocked, disgusted even... I looked at the face we had given Genesect - a cold, murderous grin, meant to strike fear into the hearts of its enemies - and I felt that even if we hadn't given it that, it'd be grinning in delight all the same." N, who was of the belief that Pokémon were perfect beings who lost their natural beauty if modified by science, decreed that Project G was to be shut down, Genesect terminated and the "defiled" P2 Laboratory closed and abandoned. The scientists all complied with N's wishes, except for Dudley, who felt angered that N had denied his talents. He pretended to have killed Genesect to satisfy N, then later quit Team Plasma to finish Genesect in the lab independently. However, what happened to Genesect after this point is unknown, as Dudley refuses to tell anyone what happened next. What can be inferred, however, is that after Genesect's completion, the Pokémon disappeared without a trace.

Despite this, Project G did not die. Years later, after N had abdicated his position as king and left to travel the world, his adoptive father, Ghetsis, and Team Plasma's new boss, Colress, revived the project on a much larger scale - retaining the research from the initial attempt, the plan was now to create an entire army of Genesect, made up of platoons of five soldiers - four with their own Techno Blast types and a fifth, super-enhanced red model with greater speed and power who would lead and command the other four. However, upon activation, the initial platoon instantly rebelled against its creators, completely destroying the laboratory complex designed for the project and escaping captivity. This "Genesect Army" later attacked New Tork City, under the impression that it was their homeland from their past lives. After a brief conflict with fellow artificial Pokémon Mewtwo, the Army relocated to Absentia Natural Park, where they live to this day as a protected species hidden from the public eye.

Today, Dudley has largely wished to forget about Genesect, having destroyed his research in an act of conscience. Though Team Plasma as it was under Colress's control has largely dissolved, little substantial information on Project G has been found at their various bases, with the one exception being a demonstration of the Genesect Army's capabilities, which has been posted online by some enterprising hackers. Despite this, a Hiker residing in Ambrette Town owns the design notes for Genesect's Drives, and has managed to recreate them. Time will tell if he uses the Drive technology for applications beyond its initial warfare purpose. Another set of Drives have also been rumored to have been sold to a man in the Hoenn region via Unova's black market, but this is unconfirmed.

Known Sightings

The most well documented sighting of Genesect would be of the Genesect Army's invasion of Pokémon Hills, where they very nearly destroyed New Tork City through building their nest in the city's power supply underneath the park. They now live peacefully in Absentia Natural Park, though visitors are not permitted to see them.

The original Genesect created by Dudley, however, has rarely, if ever, been seen. There have occasionally been cases where people have seen flashes of green light burst forth from an area, and heard a harsh electronic war cry before getting closer and seeing one or more strong Pokémon collapsed on the ground - severely injured at best, and dead at worst. In particular, a Hydreigon was known to have been a "local bully" by residents of a mountain village, but after its cave glowed green and an electronic cackle was heard from it one night, it became a much more gentle and friendly creature the next day, with a missing head and several cuts and burn marks over its body. Lately, it is rumored that a large metal bug has seen near Glittering Cave in the Kalos region, but no photographic proof has yet emerged.

Diet

How Genesect eats is a mystery - despite having an artificial mouth that never moves, it is capable of eating Poké Puffs just fine (incidentally, it likes them as with most other Pokémon). It does appear, however, that Genesect is able to go for a long time without food or water. It's theorised that Genesect are largely carnivorous, however, as their roles as top predators 300 million years ago suggest they largely ate the meat of their prey.

Abilities

Genesect's capabilities are extremely diverse thanks to Team Plasma's enhancements. A battle computer placed in the brain allows Genesect to learn a vast array of moves, either by naturally developing them through experience or by downloading the information directly from a Technical or Hidden Machine. Its sharp claws and hydraulics make its physical attacks (such as X-Scissor and Slash) stronger than they already were 300 million years ago. Though the original Pokémon could naturally use special attacks like Bug Buzz, Signal Beam and String Shot during the Paleozoic era, they were largely weaker compared to striking the enemy with its claws. The addition of the powerful cannon on its back, however, allowed it to use them with much greater power, and the cannon is capable of firing weapons of many types, such as flamethrowers, bombs, beams, thunderbolts and many other attacks otherwise impossible for the creature to learn. Genesect also appears capable of using some psychokinetic powers.

The addition of steel armor to the Pokémon grants it immense protection from attacks, with most types hardly scratching it, others doing normal damage and poison-based attacks rendered utterly useless (it also helps that there is little left of the Bug Pokémon that can be poisoned). However, this also grants it a fatal flaw - fire and immense heat will easily cook Genesect's cybernetics and organic parts, despite the steel armor having a very high melting point. The creature is also able to "download" information on a target's defenses and boost the power of its cannon or its hydraulics depending on which defense is weaker. Aside from levitating with antigravity devices in the abdomen and cannon, Genesect is able to fold itself up into a board shape and fly at incredibly high speeds (Dudley dubbed this its "High-Speed Flight Form"). The creature is able to use attacks like Fly and U-Turn very effectively as a result.

Though able to use different weapons, the cannon was designed to use one weapon in particular - a powerful green laser codenamed "Techno Blast", of which Genesect is the only Pokémon who knows it. Seemingly drawing influence from the capabilities of the mythical Arceus' Multitype ability and Judgment attack, the cannon was designed to change the laser's properties depending on data taken from interchangeable Drives (of which only a few were designed and made before the project's cancellation, and those were made with cassette technology, due to Dudley losing Team Plasma's financial backing) inserted into the back of the cannon. The Burn Drive superheats the laser and turns it red, the Shock Drive electrically charges it and turns it yellow, the Douse Drive cools the air around the laser into high-pressure water and turns it blue and the Chill Drive supercools the laser to temperatures near absolute zero and turns it white. Though initial tests proved the weapon and its variants to be inferior to Thunderbolt, Flamethrower and Ice Beam in potency and energy consumption, enhancements were made to make them even more powerful than those three and the powerful but less accurate and just as power consuming Fire Blast, Blizzard, Hydro Pump and Thunder attacks.

The Genesect Army were also made to use Drives, seemingly out of budget constraints/convenience. The intention was to make platoons of multiple Genesect who would be specialised in one type of Techno Blast each, instead of one model who would need its Drive manually changed before it was deployed.

The red model of Genesect has greater capabilities than the other models, with greater speed (and the ability to use Extremespeed, earning it the nickname "Extremespeed Genesect") and a Techno Blast that seemingly uses the properties of the similar Dark Pulse attack. The only Pokémon known to outspeed this Genesect is Mega Mewtwo Y, as seen during the Pokémon Hills incident. The four purple Genesect have microchips in them that are designed to receive radio transmissions from the red Genesect, which then forces them to react to the red Genesect's directives. The leader's eyes glow red to indicate that control is being issued over the other four, whose own eyes glow red to show they are under control. This radio system would appear to have been an invention designed specifically for the later iteration of Project G, but it is not implausible that the same system was implemented in Dudley's Genesect to keep it in line (with, obviously, zero success).

Hazards

Genesect is known to have been a ruthless and feared hunter 300 million years ago, using its above-primitive intelligence to analyse an enemy's weaknesses and then ruthlessly exploiting them. With its enhanced intelligence and power, this makes it a very dangerous Pokémon to battle. Due to its early life as a hunter and later reconstruction into a biological superweapon by Team Plasma, Genesect actively tries to kill its targets instead of making them faint, thus any trainers wishing to battle it must be aware of the enormous risk involved and bring powerful Fire type Pokémon. Running away from Genesect is also very risky, since it will likely pursue its target into a corner where it will deal the killing blow. As a result, it is generally advised no Trainer attempt to confront it, catch it, run away from it or even be in the same area as it.

If confrontation is inevitable, however, playing dead might fool Genesect into leaving in search of new prey... provided it decides not to take the body parts of any hapless Trainers doing so as a trophy to display near its nest.

Other

Genesect's original form lived within large oblong nests spun from silk, and it retains this habitat in spite of the heavy modifications. Though the Genesect Army is known to make organic bug noises and speak to humans via telepathy, the claims of harsh electronic cries and laughter coming from certain areas where the original Genesect is rumored to have been indicate it was originally built with a vocoder. The similarities in backstory to the infamous urban legend Mewtwo (a Pokémon made by man to be the strongest ever) have caused many conspiracy theorists to believe Team Plasma designed it to be stronger than it by making it a Bug/Steel type, thus making it stronger than the strongest by hitting Mewtwo with Bug attacks and resisting its powerful psychic onslaught with its steel armor. Dudley has neither confirmed nor denied this. The original Pokémon Genesect was made from has often been thought to be a mere Kabutops, though this is highly unlikely as Kabutops is not a Bug type - Professor Rowan believes it is far more likely that it was an early ancestor of Scyther.

Project G's files appear to be slowly leaking out - a Hiker in Kalos has been known to have recieved the blueprints for the Drives from "an aquaintence in Unova" and reproduced them, while another set of Drives are rumored to have been in the possession of a man in Hoenn for at least since the day one of the region's legendary Pokémon appeared.

In Human Society

Genesect and the story of its creation seem to have affected popular culture, in particular the sci-fi genre, where it served as the inspiration for a race of xenophobic aliens in a landmark series, and prompted the first incarnation of a popular multimedia toyline to include a trio of villains who become purple robotic insects, though none of them turn into a Genesect. Genesect itself has appeared most famously (albeit with its size greatly exaggerated for dramatic effect) in an extremely popular anime series. There, it is depicted as part of an evil organization's plan to merge the souls of all humanity together.
