Authors and Websites

The Scorpion

  • Recommended by: somebody else
  • Comments: This is one of (if not the) best authors for morbid Phantom fics. Hasn't been active for a while, but what she's got is amazing.

Gondolier

  • Recommended by: somebody else
  • Comments: Very poetic, dedicated, and versatile as a writer. Sometimes falls prey to purple prose, but seems to have mastered this in more recent stories.

JustBFree5

  • Recommended by: Elenor
  • Comments: Always writes phenomenal, complex stories each different than the last. An Erik/Christine shipper.

Lucifer Rosemaunt

  • Recommended by: PheonixReaper
  • Comments: Writes brilliant, engaging fics, covers a wide range of genres and makes all of them work. An Erik/Raoul shipper (yes, that's slash).

Battydings

  • Recommended by: AdelePotter
  • Comments: Writes dark, Leroux-inspired Erik/Christine fic, though things don't always end well for them. Mixes romance with tragedy, drama, and sometimes horror. Everything she writes for this fandom is fantastic.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

The Conjuror's Masque by Tytania Strange

  • Recommended by: Zerbinetta
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Mayhem enters the PotO book as Christine Daaé is murdered before she can make her debut, a waifish imposter claims her place and Erik seems to be undergoing a strange transformation... and it's up to Carlotta to solve the mystery.
  • Comments: This fic is wonderful, snarkily funny and filled with wonderful details about the life of an opera singer (Tytania Strange herself is a pro). Her interpretation of how Erik would turn out under these circumstances is also spot-on.

Koszcey by Phoenix Flame6

  • Recommended by: Elenor
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Nadir will bring back the Frenchman like he was ordered to. But a dinner out reveals a magician with more than a few tricks up his sleeve.
  • Comments: A nice little character piece of Erik's pre-Angel-of-Music days.

See Christine Sing! Sing, Christine, Sing! by Silver Whirl

  • Recommended by: Super Troper, albinotiger
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Phantom, in the Style of a Dick and Jane book.
  • Comments: Brilliant - wonderfully acute and it had me in stitches the whole way.

The Phantom of Harrison High by BleedingHeartConservative

  • Recommended by: albinotiger
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Someone at Harrison HS has been reading POTO and taking it too seriously. About bullying, peer pressure, isolation, cruelty.
  • Comments: A great story with an excellent twist on the usual "POTO in high school" genre. Very touching, with an excellent PSA about bullying following the story.

Conversations with Vacant Chairs by BalletRat

  • Recommended by: TheLuckyCat
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: It started with Meg Giry entering the Ghost's box on a dare. Now, all the ballet girls are finding themselves face-to-face with the infamous Opera Ghost at the most inconvenient times.
  • Comments: Charming, engaging and very much fits the overall style of the novel and the ballet rats each are given their own personalities and have interesting interactions with a nice, IC Phantom.

Fraternité by Gondolier

  • Recommended by: Apocrypha
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Something sinister is stalking Christine, and only one man can save her. As they uncover deadly secrets taken to the grave, they find that the greatest mystery of all is the human heart. A tale of intrigue, love, and redemption.
  • Pairings: Erik/Christine, past Raoul/Christine
  • Comments: The best Phantom of the Opera sequel this troper has ever read. It uses Canon Welding to combine different aspects of Leroux and Kay's novels with the musical and is very well-researched, with a gripping storyline and excellent development of Erik and Christine as individuals and as a couple. A tale of intrigue, love, and redemption indeed.

A Ghost on the Roof by Klaus Scrimshaw

  • Recommended by: Adele Potter
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: When a young soprano hears a voice on the Paris opera house’s roof, strange events upset the ballerinas’ everyday life. Modern retelling of the Phantom of the Opera.
  • Parings: Too early to tell, but Raoul/Christine and Erik/Christine have both been hinted at.
  • Comments: This is a webcomic adaptation of the novel, and it is marvelous. Not only is the art and attention to detail fantastic, but the author has reimagined canon in unique and unusual ways. It's still definitely the same story, but with enough twists and turns to keep readers guessing. So far, it's a bit Lighter and Softer than canon, but the author has hinted at darker things to come.

Phantom's Beauty by Lady Rosesong

  • Recommended by: jkrfan7
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A retelling of The Phantom of the Opera that combines elements from "Disney's Beauty and the Beast." Christine and her violinist father come to the Paris Opera House with hopes of making their musical dreams come true. However, all hopes are shattered after Christine's father is kidnapped by the infamous Phantom. She boldly enters the forbidden catacombs, willing to offer her life for her father's.
  • Comments: One of the first fics I read, this story is an amazing blend of elements from both the musical and Disney movie.

First Love by xLadyJackal

  • Recommended by: The Wild West Pyro
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Meg Giry wants to tell you a story.
  • Comments: A simple yet incredibly engaging character study into Meg, with a surprise cameo from La Sorelli. Fits both the book and music universe without being specific as to which.

Locked Door by Gondolier

  • Recommended by: The Wild West Pyro
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Christine has difficulty reaching her angel, though he is just beyond the door...Confused? Well, that would make sense, as nothing is for certain in this tale.
  • Comments: A genuinely scary AU where Christine is insane and residing in an asylum while remaining completely in-character. Features not only a brilliant reveal but a very effective twist ending.

Killing your darling by Maze-zen

  • Recommended by: The Wild West Pyro
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When Erik decides to keep Christine underground, things don't go as he expected.
  • Comments: Musical-verse. Erik finds himself in a creative Groundhog Day loop where all his attempts to keep Christine for herself end in her death, and only breaks his cycle by following the canon conclusion. Special mention goes to Christine being unexpectedly closer to her book characterization in being constantly defiant to Erik's face, refusing to give up her love for Raoul, and searching to escape even if it means her death. The endless deaths can be read as serious horror or Black Comedy, but it doesn't diminish the excellent story.

Consumed by Silver Tallest

  • Recommended by: The Wild West Pyro
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A Halloween oneshot for a-partofthenarrative's POTO 13 Nights of Halloween. Erik's obsession with Christine is all-consuming
  • Comments: An absolutely brilliant horror story in which the twist ending actually works, and makes you go back to check all the other details and foreshadowing. The reveal of who the monster is in the story is so effective that previous hints and their nature can also be read as simply being in-character.

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

A Solo For The Living by Tango1

  • Recommended by: somebody else
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: It's 1870, and the Opera Populaire is gone. Those who survived that strange affair are left to struggle with its aftermath while war with Prussia approaches.(Based on the 2004 movie.)
  • Pairings: Erik/Christine, Raoul/Christine
  • Comments: The summary above doesn't even begin to do this story justice. Dark, psychological, moving, and realistic. While researched extensively it never lectures. Everyone is not only in-character but fleshed out in such a way that makes them feel even more human. Easily the best Phantom of the Opera sequel this troper has ever read. Hasn't updated in a few years though, so be warned.
    • Updates again as of 2016.

Cosi Fan Tutte by Ione

  • Recommended by: Elenor
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A small-town girl who hopes to one day write operas, Christine's life at the time involves daydreaming of her French teacher M. De Chagny and spending time with her best friend Meg. When she has a chance encounter in the library while looking for a opera book she doesn't know that she's caught the attention of a retired Phantom. Nor does she know that he's quite willing to kill to have her. After all, it's nothing he hasn't done before.
  • Pairing: Erik/Christine
  • Comments: Very good in keeping in character in a modern setting.
    • Read with care. This story is freaking creepy—and not in a good way.

The Six Months of Winter by Celestel

  • Recommended by: Elenor
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Six months, that's how long Erik has left to live. And Christine agrees to be his wife for just six months. But is that amount of time too long, or too short.
  • Pairing: Erik/Christine
  • Comments: A haunting story that doesn't end sugar coated, by may yet be happily ever after.

Mingled Tears: Tales of a Living Wife by bwayphantomrose

  • Recommended by: Elenor
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Christine chooses to stay with Erik. A rich complex look at the characters and how they grow and change.
  • Pairing: Erik/Christine
  • Comments: It was a true masterpiece! I followed - cheering, laughing, screaming, crying. It was, in the end, perfect.

Unseen Genius by Kay Blue Eyes

  • Recommended by: JayieTheHufflepuff
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Erik/OC
  • Synopsis: A woman appears at the Opera determined to save the theater from the fiery fate she has seen in her dreams. But will her visions leave her at the mercy of the Opera Ghost or will she find an unexpected connection with an injured, masked man she finds deep. (Based on the 2004 movie.)
  • Comments: I have to admit it's been a while since I read this fic, but I do remember it being completely and utterly amazing. The OC's perhaps even more fleshed out than the canon characters, and I found myself, a previously hard-core Erik/Christine shipper, preferring this OC ship. The character development and the journey these two characters take is amazing. This is seriously worth a read.

Battered Dove by Battydings

  • Recommended by: Adele Potter
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Erik/Christine
  • Synopsis: Erik meets Christine under very unique circumstances. Creepy, dark, romantic vibes. An attempt at seeing how dark we can go before finding the light. [A modern, book-based AU in which Christine is a homeless drug addict who sings for spare change, and Erik is quickly obsessed.]
  • Comments: This fic is extremely dark, so please be wary; drug addiction is at the core of the story, and there are also themes of rape, kidnapping, murder, and abuse. However, if that doesn't put you off, it comes highly recommended. The author's characterization of Erik is marvelously monstrous and human at the same time, and they paint a heartbreakingly sympathetic portrait of Christine. Their relationship is as unhealthy as ever, but deeply intriguing. I also really love their take on the modern Daroga and Madame Giry.

A Symphony of Heartstrings by Persephatta

  • Recommended by: The Wild West Pyro
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Erik/Meg
  • Synopsis: Soulmate AU: Meg discovers that Erik is her soulmate, to her delight.
  • Comments: Meg is given wonderful characterization in this fic; a fan of Gothic novels that sees their stories paralleling her own experience with the Ghost, finding Erik's face interesting rather than frightening, and an absolute ray of sunshine that brings Erik out of his lonely dark and into happiness and warmth with her. Despite the Soulmate AU, it's an extremely compelling look at their characters and a relationship they could have, and there's no overemphasis on the Soulmate marks at all.

Wishes Can't Come True If They Already Have by argelfraster_Z

  • Recommended by: The Wild West Pyro
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Meg/Christine
  • Synopsis: It’s been almost a year since young Christine Daaé lost her father, and now that it’s finally spring, Meg has a surprise for her. (oneshot)
  • Comments: A beautifully sweet one-shot with the unique premise that Meg is older than Christine here, and written artfully without descending into purple prose, tied neatly with the classic romantic themes of flowers - specifically Paris daisies - and shooting stars.

Phantom of the Labyrinth by CeleciaLeigh

  • Recommended by: Alyssa Macki
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: Labyrinth
  • Synopsis: A retelling of Phantom of The Opera that reveals more about the Phantom than any other work. The story of how The Goblin King and the Phantom are closer than you would think.
  • Comments: This is a really good story, with good reasoning as to why the characters do what they do and has a very good plot setup.

Spare Me These Unending Trials by Petit Parapluie

  • Recommended by: Much Ado About Nonny
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: The Flying Dutchman
  • Synopsis: Based primarily on my fascination with The Flying Dutchman the opera and what the suave Erik would make of a certain tragic Scottish organ playing doppelganger...Expect chaos to ensue, of course.
  • Notes: Vanished from the internet. Please post a link if found.
