American Captain

  • Recommended by: Nightsky
  • Status: ?
  • Synopsis: Comic series in which Steve Rogers tries to adjust to his new life. It's not always easy. Scratch that—it's not ever easy, but Steve still has to sort through his issues—his survivor guilt, his PTSD, his alienation from all he ever knew, his mixed feelings about SHIELD—and navigate his relationships with his colleagues, alleviated only by his friends and the occasional good day. Heartbreakingly good.
  • Notes: The link seems to be broken as of December 2016.

scifigrl47

  • Recommended by: Ramber
  • Comments: scifigrl47 is an amazing writer, the majority of which is slash but her plots are well executed, planting innocent objects around her scene so nonchalantly, you barely realized that a major turning point of the story had just passed.

valtyr

  • Recommended by: carzla
  • Comments: valtyr writes fics for The Avengers from 616-universe to Ultimates to Marvel Adventures and movie-verse. They're all largely slash of the Steve/Tony variety but her writing distinguishes every iteration of Steve and Tony in the multiverse from their counterparts, so even if you didn't notice before, you'll know which universe you're reading about through her characterizations. Also, her longer, plotty fics are a joy to read. The first Avengers fic I read has been recommended below, Secrets of a Successful Marriage, and everything else she has written will definitely appeal to someone.

     General Fics
Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Agent Loki International Man Of Mayhem by Dee

  • Recommended by: Aethyria, Mooncinder, Ragnar The Semi Green
  • Vanished from the internet. Please post a link if found.
  • Synopsis: What if, instead of sending the defeated Loki back to Asgard, S.H.I.E.L.D. had kept him instead?
  • Comments: Written in 2nd Person POV, this is totally a fic all Avengers fans should read and it is definitely one of my favorites.

Age of Ultron: Redux by letmetellyouaboutmyfeels

  • Recommended by: LordYAM, hubakon1368
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An alternate take on Age of Ultron by someone who wasn't impressed by the movie.
  • Notes: Can be found here. Alternate links here and here.
  • Comments: Overall, an interesting take on the movie. Some of the elements were wonderful (they incorporated the twins' backstory, the final battle is great, and some of the ridiculous stuff like Natasha thinking she was a monster because she was sterile rather than because she killed people is changed); on the other hand Vision was removed and Ultron is reduced to basically being Thanos's minion (he even says he's "following orders".)
    • hubakon1368: This is a definite improvement over the movie, the elements of the movie that were controversial were removed, and the new elements included in the story were great. I appreciate the author for having Betty Ross appear in the story as well as the appearances of Pepper Potts, Jane Foster, and Darcy Lewis. The reference to who the Maximoff twins' father is is great. The action scenes were well written. The climax of the story was incredible. The characters moments were genuinely touching. I love how the author really made the Avengers feel like a team. This story should have been the movie.

Amateur Theatrics by galaxysoup

  • Recommended by: Victoria Writes
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: In which Thor's primary problem-solving method (a mighty blow from Mjölnir) fails to have the desired effect on a magical artifact, and his secondary method (a mightier blow from Mjölnir) proves to be actively disastrous.
  • Comments: A sweet-hearted and sincere fic involving a surprisingly complex kid!Loki and the Avengers' unsure attempts to help him fix a magic spell gone ridiculously wrong.

Avengers and Videogames by Melting Angels

Body to Body by quijonejinn

  • Recommended by: Victoria Writes
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: In March, Steve goes home to his old neighborhood.
  • Pairing: Pepper/Steve
  • Comments: A very sweet, non-angsty, Steve-centric fic about him adjusting to his new life and finding a place for himself in 2012.

By Any Other Name by CypressTiger

  • Recommended by: fruitstripegum
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Fearing that her family fortune would be lost to the untrustworthy Stane, Natasha Stark illegally answers a draft notice and escapes to war. As a young noble woman living in a patriarchal society, her military service is forbidden. Impersonating a man, she sets out to train with the other troops only to discover that she is uniquely qualified for the army. Using her wits and skills, Natasha and her new group of friends work together to destroy the enemy known as Hydra. Despite her best efforts to remain unattached, she falls for a dashing captain along the way.

Cat's in the Cradle Lunik

  • Recommended by: Newt, Katie-P
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When Odin took a half-Jotun baby out of a temple in Jotunheim, he wasn't the only one to claim to be the child's father. As his mother, Laufey King cheerfully refused to settle any dispute and soon there was at least one person in every realm who laid their claim as Loki's father. Except for the mortal creatures of Midgard, that is. Tony Stark thinks this needs to be rectified. And Loki Tonyson has a nice ring to it.

Daktoa for One by Ordis

  • Recommended by: Gemini24
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: He doesn't know why he is standing here in front of the prisoner, trying to persuade it to eat. If it does not deserve what it has, it killed thousands. Refused them the Tesseract and forced them into a war they never wanted. It deserves no mercy. And yet, here he is.

Don't Call Us, We'll Call You by Vana Jedi

  • Synopsis: Fury forces the Avengers to hold job interviews for a new position.

Dopplegangers by nom*stars

  • Recommended by: Zephyr7, Ellawenna, Pthalo
  • Status: Complete
  • Synoposis: Steve makes the mistake of taking Thor to the zoo. Tony makes the mistake of buying nine penguins. Everyone else thinks they've made the mistake of joining the Avengers in the first place
  • Comments: The Avengers and penguins together are an instant win. Thor naming all the penguins with variations of Tony's name was hilarious, as well as the rest of the Avengers' reaction to the whole thing.

Drown by Ordis

  • Recommended by: Gemini24
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Three months after Operation Avengers all is well. Or is it? When Steve and Tony hack into SHIELD to find missing weapons shipments they find more than they bargained for in the form of a prisoner who should, by rights, have been sent to Asgard long ago.

Every Denny's in America by Sookie Starchild

  • Recommended by: Oris, Ellawenna, caughtbluehanded, yosafbrige
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Thor and Steve are definitely not hiding in a Denny's restaurant. Because Thor doesn't hide and Steve doesn't run away from his problems.
  • Comments: A very fun little bro!fic for Thor and Steve.

Forcible Redemption by Sarah1281

  • Recommended by: Lucia Malpense
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Loki had given a lot of thought to what his punishment might be but this one might be the worst of all. Apparently he was going to be redeemed. By THOR. That was such a bad idea it was painful. Where was an abyss to be thrown into when you needed it?

Glorious Purr by PurpleMoon3

  • Recommended by: Gemini24
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: In which AVENGERS goes far, far differently and Loki has grown himself cat ears and tail while in the VOID.

Hawkeye & Black Widow: Sight Unseen by Fenix84

  • Recommended by: Pistachio Infernal
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Agent Clint Barton is plagued by doubts about himself and the nature of his job. Assassin Natasha Romanoff is living a lie that cannot last. Though they fight for opposing sides, they are both among the best in their deadly profession. What will they find in each other when they inevitably clash?
  • Comments: While there are many 'Clint recruits/saves Natasha' stories out there, there are very few ones worth reading. This is one of them. Fenix84 writes it like a good adaptation to a good movie.

Inverted Perceptions by archangelraphaelsdaughter

  • Recommended by: Gemini24
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: While Loki is imprisoned in the aftermath of his defeat, a foreign disc arrives on the Helicarrier and the Avengers watch Loki's degeneration. The Avengers watch the movie Thor. Now, in knowing Loki, they begin to wonder at the motivation for his most recent actions, and who else was involved in directing the Chitauri army.
  • Notes: First in the Compare and Contrast the Following series, followed by its sequels Enlightening Nuances and Cementing Heritage, as well as the collection of scenes Despite Circumstances.

In Which JARVIS Is Mistaken For by BringOnTheWonder1997

  • Recommended by: Gemini24

In Which The Avengers Take Exception to the Army Meddling In Their Affairs by megster

  • Recommended by: Victoria Writes, Melek, Ellawenna
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: General Ross decides to take on the Avengers. The Avengers decide to take down General Ross.
  • Notes: Part of the The Further Adventures of the Avengers (and Phil Coulson) series.
  • Comments: Because the Avengers are protective of Bruce.
    • This whole series is worth taking a look at, especially if you're a fan of Team!Fic.

The Iron Man Thing by Ironychan

  • Recommended by: wolfchasing
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After inviting Dr. Stephen Strange to his home, Tony wakes up the next morning to find that his AI has undergone a very fleshy transformation.
  • Comments: Stemming from one of those Tumblr fic photosets, ironychan has written a very fun, very thoughtful, and very plot-heavy story where JARVIS has been magicked into a human body. Perfectly deals with the consequences of forcing an all-knowing computer into the frail, limited body of a human. The AI's meat-suit is inspired by the looks of real life JARVIS voice actor, Paul Bettany.

It's All in the Mind by inukagome15

  • Recommended by: Lucia Malpense, Melek
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Tony is 100% normal. Tony is not a mutant. Tony is Iron Man. Tony is an Avenger. Tony...is just fooling himself.
  • Pairing: Tony/Steve
  • Notes: Has a sequel, Telekinesis 101 (Or A Guide to Readjusting Perceptions).
  • Comments: A beautiful fic that logically ties in Mutant!Tony with canon.
    • Hilarious, but in need of a good Beta to shore up some internal inconsistencies.

The Joke by Imbecamiel

  • Recommended by: Lucia Malpense, feral, Victoria Writes, caughtbluehanded
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Steve's not usually oblivious - far from it, in fact. But he does have his moments. Like when he didn't realize that the team was actually serious when they talked about Mjölnir being a magical weapon that only Thor could lift.

Life in Reverse by Min Daae

  • Recommended by: Gemini24
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Home is where you make it. Or, the AU where Loki falls to Earth after Thor, wanders around trying to work out what to do with himself, and somehow ends up working for SHIELD. Mostly because supervillains are so plebian.

Loki and the Penguin Liberation Front by LulaMadison

  • Recommended by: CasualBanshee, Ellawenna
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Penguins in zoos all over the world suddenly vanish. The Avengers are sent to investigate.
  • Comments: Though this is a crackfic, it doesn't diminish the quality of the writing or humor whatsoever. Guaranteed to at least raise a few chuckles.

Loki is Sorry Cakes by anno_Hreog

  • Recommended by: ghostchibi
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Years later, Loki has to repay New York City for leading the Chitauri attack. He opens "Loki is Sorry Cakes", which has lazy business hours and very tasty cupcakes and muffins for free. Thor was being sarcastic when he said Loki could at least bake muffins...
  • Comments: A crack-y, hilarious fanfiction that's just kind of pokes fun at every given corner. It's extremely silly, but doesn't turn into one giant, boring joke about superhero cupcakes. If you need some silly Avengers and Loki, read this.

The Lost by VeritySilvers

  • Recommended by: Marlee Cross
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Jane Foster's niece Maddie is sixteen days old when she is stolen out of her crib. The Avengers won't stand for this, and are faced with human trafficking rings, undercover assignments, and far too many moral dilemmas as they investigate and attempt to bring her home again.
  • Comments: For anyone looking for a real plot heavy fic that also has some really great character interactions and development.
    • Unfortunately has not updated since 2012. What is there is still pretty good and well worth checking out.

Motion Practice by the_wordbutler

  • Recommended by: Hawk Of Coul, Paul A
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When Clint Barton takes a job prosecuting traffic offenses and DUIs at the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, he's pretty sure his life is finally going in the right direction. But the problem isn't the direction: it's where he ends up.
  • Pairing: Clint/Coulson
  • Notes: First part of the Motion Practice series.
  • Comments: An amazing Alternate Universe Fic which makes good use of setting and characters, giving complexity and humanity to every character.

Phil Coulson is not a crazy cat lady by nyargles

  • Recommended by: Ellowen, Aruu, Secret Fan 14, cxw1065
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An AU where the Avengers are not a superhero team, but rather a group of cats that Phil Coulson has rescued from various encounters with aliens and villains, who in turn adopt him and terrorize everyone else in the SHIELD office.
  • Notes: First part of the Catvengers series.
  • Comments: could not stop laughing.
    • A funny and oddly sweet fanfic! For something that is essentially crack, it's very well written and fits nicely into the Avengers universe. Highly recommended. - Aruu

Prince of Asgard by MatrixFairy

  • Recommended by: fruitstripegum
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An Avengers version of The Prince of Egypt, where the jotun are slaves under the aesir and Loki was found in a basket on the river.
  • Pairing: Tony/Loki
  • Comments: Despite what the summary implies, this is not just a Transplanted Character Fic. Warning where it's due - some characters are out of character, the pairing might be considered a little cracky (it's Loki/Tony) and there is mpreg. But, if you can cope with all that, enjoy!

The Protective Reasoning Universe by Dogstar-Black

  • Recommended by: behindthesky, Ellowen
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: The lives of the Avengers as they knit together into a beautifully overprotective pack: dark pasts come knocking, team bonding is done, and stuff blows up, not necessarily in that order.
  • Notes: Includes Protective Reasoning (complete), Home Sweet Home (complete), Ties That Bind (complete), Retrograde (dead), and Repercussions (dead).
  • Comments: anyone with a taste for True Companions fic should take a look at this one. Especially recommended for Hawkeye lovers, the author is a fan of badass Clint and it shows.

Silver Moon by aurilly

  • Recommended by: Komodo Classic
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Steve and Bucky find a weirdly dressed guy in an alley who rants at them about how he's a banished prince from some place they've never heard of. Most New Yorkers would have left the lunatic right where they found him, but Steve and Bucky have never been good at doing things the easy way.
  • Comments: Basically, Loki is banished instead of Thor, but it happens earlier. Loki ends up in Brooklyn on the eve of World War II, where he runs into Bucky and Steve. It's a oneshot, but rather long.

Simply Indispensable by spockside

  • Recommended by: Victoria Writes, Mooncinder, Ellawenna
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: In which bullies from Darcy's school days take up where they left off, unaware of the team that now has her back.
  • Comments: It's a good hurt/comfort, but characterization choices leave it very YMMV.

The Spaces Between by Min Daae

  • Recommended by: Gemini24
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: There's a theory that goes that there's a universe created for every possible choice you make in life. Loki's made a lot of choices. He could make a lot more. Or, the one where Loki wanders through AUs of his life and it starts messing with his head.

Syrgja by Lady Charity

  • Recommended by: Gemini24
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: None of this was supposed to happen. SHIELD wasn't supposed to find Thor and Loki on Earth three years after the battle. Loki wasn't supposed to be a silent shadow of who he once was. And the Avengers...weren't ever meant to have to endure the madness that would follow.
  • Pairings: Loki/Natasha

Tony's New Assitant by MarbleGlove

  • Recommended by: Newt, Katie-P

User Since by rageprufrock

  • Recommended by: Wild Goose, Newt
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: PC's internet forum tries to find him after The Battle of New York.
  • Notes: First part of the Howling Commandos HQ duology.
  • Comments: A heartstring-tugging story of how the members of a Captain America forum that Phil Coulson founded try to track him after the events of The Avengers, and deal with their loss. Bring tissues.

A Villain State of Mind by Mikkeneko

  • Recommended by: Eldresh, Mooncinder
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: To no one's pleasure, Loki ends up stranded in SHIELD custody after the events of The Avengers. Wary of Loki's dangerous abilities, Nick Fury calls in the favor of an old friend to help him keep this new threat under control - but can even the formidable Professor X save Loki from himself?
  • Notes: First in The Great Subconscious Club series, followed by its sequels Cover Up the Sun, Laughing As I Pray, Quiet Little Place, and So Busy These Days.
  • Comments: Sort of a crossover with the Marvel universe at large, bringing in some other comic and movie characters, but with a focus on Loki and the X-Men that remains very intriguing. Definitely worth taking a look at if you're a Loki fan.

Vindices by Riddelly

  • Recommended by: Nothingtoseehere
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The Church of the Holy Shield, run by Pastor Nicholas Fury, has always communed with angels. Yet when the mysterious artifact they've long housed, the Tesseract, is stolen by a green-eyed creature claiming to be the very Devil, the six most powerful and deadly of these supernatural beings must band together to fight what may be their most costly battle yet.
  • Comments: Basically, an AU where the avengers are angels, Loki is the devil, and SHIELD is a church. And it is awesome. Just know that the avengers will be called by the names of angels, so: Black Widow- Raziel, Hawkeye- Uriel, Iron Man- Gabriel, Captain America- Micheal, Thor- Ramiel and the Hulk- Ezekiel. Its all obvious in the text though.

The World Without by mikey magee

  • Recommended by: Gemini24
  • Status: Dead

You'll Find the Bright Places by BlackEyedGirl

  • Recommended by: Zephyr7
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Fury temples his fingers together. "Tell me how this started?" Phil tries to give a reasonable report of today's incident. As he spent most of his day trying to keep grade-school aged versions of his team away from a team of gunmen, he has only limited success.
  • Comments: An absolutely adorable and awesome kidfic where Papa Wolf Coulson has to make sure his little charges are kept safe while he takes care of those coming after them.

"Avengers: Earth's Mightiest" by [burningvindaloo]

  • Recommended by: jl94
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A classic superhero story about the best heroes fighting the best villains. The story is large in scope and has some fun banter between the characters. You can really picture the story occurring on panel. Wikipedia might be required to google some of the characters and the description sometimes isn't the best. But overall an enjoyable Avengers story that I would recommend.

     Shipping Fics
Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Absolute Necessities by MLGumm

  • Recommended by: openseseme
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Bruce has serious intimacy issues. They are explored.
  • Pairing: Bruce/Tony
  • Comments: I don't know how, but MLGumm tends to say a lot of things in very few words. In a single word, I would mainly describe this fic as "thoughtful." If you want something short and sweet, with a tendency to linger in your thoughts, give it a try.

The Affairs of Wizards by Pluma Desatada

  • Recommended by: Cinnigan, Glass Spires
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Tony Stark, playboy billionaire genius, is the CEO of the world's number one manufacturer of Anti-Psionic technology, like his father before him, and his grandfather before that. Loki Olson, a warlock raised by the staunchest supporter of anti-magic regulation, dreams of a better future where he no longer is a fugitive hunted by the government, and fights to make it happen.
  • Pairing: Tony/Loki
  • Comments: An AU fic with a very good plot and extremely good characterisation. Actually follows the plot of the movies quite well, given it's obvious AU-ness. The pairing is frostiron, but this is a well told story as much as it is a shipping fic. Definitely worth a read.

Does Joss Whedon Write Your Dialogue? by longdarkteatime

  • Recommended by: Melek, Pthalo

  • Synopsis: Everyone gives Tony the shovel talk, even the people who ought to know better. Plus, sort of a fixit, in that The Thing That Joss Did, Joss did not do. I explain nothing.
  • Pairing: Clint/Tony
  • Notes: Part of the Dodgy Chinese series.
  • Comments: The team isn't filled with confidence by Tony's dating history, and tells him so. Tony does not take this well. Neither does Clint. (Also:the author is serious about their run-on-sentence problem.)

  • Pairings: Clint/Loki, Steve/Thor, Jane/Darcy
  • Synopsis: AU. Most people, when they break up, sort through their record collections, possibly chuck each other’s clothes onto the sidewalk, engage in soul-destroying coffee dates where they try to sort through the emotional debris, and then leave each other the fuck alone. Clint and Natasha were never very good at acting like normal people, though, which is why they run a cafe together.

lilies with full hands by refusals

  • Recommended by: WhatTheSpoot

  • Synopsis: His body is not his own. This may not be the first thing they teach him, but it's the first thing he learns. When Steve finally brings Bucky home, they realize the fight isn't over yet, and trauma is one battlefield where even Captain America isn't sure he can save somebody.
  • Pairing: Steve/Bucky
  • Notes: First part of the give lilies with full hands series.
  • Comments: This is one of the most sensitive, realistic and respectful hurt/comfort fics out there, and deals with the fallout of trauma in a way that's both extremely compelling and extremely well-researched. It also reads like poetry, and its characterizations of both Bucky and Steve are excellent. Lots of cameos by Sam and Natasha, too (this is actually one of my favorite Natasha fics, even though she's rarely in it). Seriously a must-read.

  • Synopsis: After failing to take over Earth Loki has returned to Asgard and become King due to a series of events. He kidnaps a Midgardian that he's been stalking for most of her life and forces her to become his queen.
  • Pairing: Loki/Original Character
  • Comment: Loki's portrayal in this fan work differs after the events of the Avengers and includes some of the events of Thor: TDW. Loki's portrayal is written as a combination of his Movie appearances with a smattering of his mythological backstory and it creates an unforgettable villain turned Deuteragonist.

  • Comments: It's the single most hilarious, touching, and well-written fanfic this troper has ever read. If it gets any better it may qualify for better than cannon status, and considering the movie it's based on, that's a real honor. Seriously, if you love the Avengers you will love this fic.

  • Synopsis: Between them there're three apartments, a disgruntled downstairs neighbor, and a coffee shop with a barista who threatens them with tasers. Which, as a whole, that description sounds way more simple than it actually is.
  • Pairings: Steve/Tony, Loki/Thor, Loki/Tony, Bruce/Clint/Natasha
  • Notes: Part of the Friends!AU series.
  • Comments: A hilarious Friends!AU that is gradually getting more serious with each new chapter.

     Crossovers

Avengers of the Ring by Dr Matthattan

  • Recommended by: Nano6243
  • Crossover with: The Lord of the Rings
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Due to a freak accident involving the Bifrost, the Avengers Captain America, Thor and the Hulk are thrown into the world of Middle-earth. They join the Fellowship of the Ring in their epic struggle to defeat the Dark Lord Sauron.
  • Comments: Don't come into this expecting an epic. It's a decent, light hearted fic, with some pretty original concepts, but the dialogue is both quite cheesy and fairly clunky at times and the plot is fairly simplistic.

Child of the Storm by Nimbus Llewelyn

  • Recommended by: Theenmityofages 1994, SuperTulle, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Crossover with: Harry Potter
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: New Mexico was not the first time Thor had been a mortal. It was only a refinement of the technique. What if James Potter had been Thor, incarnated as a memoryless newborn? On his death, Odin removed his memories as James, due to grief. In Harry's Third Year, a reformed Loki restores them. Harry now has a father, a family and a heritage that is going to change the world. Forever.
  • Comments: It starts out as a light-hearted and somewhat sappy fic to begin with, before changing gears around chapter 11, quickly growing into a far darker and more complex story than the premise would have you believe. The result is an epic which emphasises the responses to the premise and the effects those changes have and how various characters evolve in response to the challenges presented. It's also equipped with a vast Chekhov's Armoury, and apparent inconsistencies can and will come back up to 74 chapters later as Foreshadowing. It's also entirely unafraid to push the boundaries of the T-rating as far as they'll go with some very dark chapters, and a growing onset of Black-and-Gray Morality, killing off multiple characters. However, there are plenty of Breather Episodes in between the serious action/plot heavy chapters, and they, along with a Lemony Narrator and an unspoken belief in heroes, prevent the fic from sliding towards Grimdark territory.
    • It's not perfect, however - entire chapters go by without much, if anything, happening and asides are dedicated to relatively meaningless things. In other words, the author is rather in love with the sound of his own voice and doesn't have a proper beta to cut out some of the more extraneous material. It comes off as more preoccupied with Character Development and Worldbuilding than developing the plot, at least at first (the two-shot spin-off, written around chapter 60, shows that he can be concise and to the point) - the first proper battle isn't until chapter 44. In other words, at 80 chapters and over 800,000 words (and that's just the first book...), written over a period of just under four years, this is not a fic for a light read. It is best binged over a weekend, and most likely to be enjoyed by those with patience.
    • Furthermore, a repeated complaint is that the villains come off as omniscient and, at times, omnipotent. The Word of God response is to point to the fact that they lose every single open engagement they get into with the heroes and that HYDRA are deeply embedded in the highest echelons of the most powerful spy agency the world has ever seen, of course, they're practically omniscient. Not, of course, that this saves them in the end.

Different Kinds of Frost by DarkDragonne

  • Recommended by: Twoie92
  • Crossover with: Rise of the Guardians
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Before he became a guardian, Jack found only one person who could see him. And that person turned out to be not quite human... and far too similar to Jack himself.
  • Comments: It's surprising to see just how alike Jack and Loki are, but at the same time it makes a lot of sense. Both are portrayed very well.

Elastic Heart by IncompleteSentanc

  • Recommended by: Dame-Amaryllis
  • Crossover with: The Hunger Games
  • Status: Dead; last updated October 2016
  • Synopsis: One by one, the Avengers are dragged into the Games — and not all of them come out on top.

Embrace the Fire: The Avenger Games by lorata

  • Recommended by: Aethyria
  • Crossover with: The Hunger Games
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Trust me, and I'll give you something better than a Mockingjay. I'll give you the Avengers."
  • Comments: It's the one of the most heart-stopping, well-written piece of crossover fic that I've ever seen. The story is fast-paced, with unexpected twist and turns, and oh-so-deliciously dark, it'll send chills down your spine and leave you wanting more.

Fight the Good Fight by Independence-Day & JonHarper

  • Recommended by: keen320
  • Crossover with: Harry Potter
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Two worlds, one defined by ancient magic, the other modern science, are about to collide in the ultimate clash of civilizations when a long lost secret is found and threatens to destroy them both.
  • Comments: Stated to be rated M with the genre "Adventure/Romance," so it may go into shipping eventually, but nothing definite so far.

Finding Home by cywsaphire

  • Recommended by: autopanda, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Crossover with: Harry Potter
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When Harry finally accepted the fact that he had stopped aging, ten years had passed and he knew it was time to leave.
  • Notes: Has an approved fan-sequel, Falling Skies by LockedOwle.
  • Comments: Go read this. Now. It is extremely well written. One of the few complaints I have, is that Harry has the overused backstory of being the master of death, but the rest of the fic is excellent. The author also redeems Loki. Also, the author has some midquels to it and other HPxAvengers crossovers that are great. There are too many to link though.

In the Midst of Liars by Bookish Cupcake

  • Recommended by: chibima
  • Crossover with: Doctor Who
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The first encounter is as survivor and child. The second is as rescuer and fallen god. The third may be their last. Each time the Doctor returns, he wears a new face. And each time, the darkness grips Loki tighter.

In Which Neither Coulson nor Sherlock are Dead by TheDullYellowEye

  • Recommended by: bookwormgal, Pthalo, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Crossover with: Sherlock
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: ...and John sort of joins the Avengers. While Coulson's recovering from being stabbed in the chest by a magical spear, Fury is rapidly running out of Agents willing to play babysitter for the newly founded Avengers. So he calls in Captain John Watson, late of the British Royal Army, and blogger and best friend to the infamously antisocial presumably deceased Sherlock Holmes.
  • Comments: Set after The Avengers and Reichenbach Falls. Because even a team of dysfunctional superheroes can't faze that man after being a roommate to Sherlock Holmes and John needs something to occupy his time with. And the Avengers are in desperate need of a babysitter that can deal with their level of insanity without running away.

It's My Problem by Namikaze_Artemis

  • Recommended by: Lucia Malpense
  • Crossover with: The Amazing Spider-Man
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: In which Peter is Tony's illegitimate child, and he's prepared to do anything to keep that a secret. Although, that doesn't stop him from trying to get Tony's approval. He is Peter's idol, after all.
  • Notes: First part of the It's Somebody's Problem series.
  • Comments: This fic is one of the rare gen superfamily fics out there. The author has a realistic take on the illegitimate son idea, and doesn't choose to rush things for the sake of fluff.

Seven Ages of Man by Salomonderiel

  • Recommended by: Lucia Malpense
  • Crossover with: The Amazing Spider-Man
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: He wasn't entirely sure when he first met Richard, and when he asked about it for his Best Man speech a few years later, it turns out, neither does Richard. But somehow, Tony made a best friend in the biochemical engineering department.
  • Comments: A little short, but still very satisfying.

SHIELD Investigation by Wednesday0991

  • Recommended by: Lucia Malpense
  • Crossover with: The Amazing Spider-Man
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Phil Coulson is investigating the events in the Amazing Spider-man for SHIELD. Interrogating Curt Connors eventually leads him to discoveries he hadn't expected.
  • Comments: One of the best SHIELD discovers Spider-Man fics out there. Very good writing. It was last updated in September 2013.

Twilight Of The Superheroes by Maksvell

  • Recommended by Morticia Percivil
  • Crossover with: X-Men
  • Status: Active
  • Synopsis: The fic takes the premise of Alan Moore's rejected pitch of The Twilight of The Superheroes and takes place in a future version of the marvel universe where humanity is ruled over by the remaining houses of heroes who are on the verge of total war with one another.

Wand and Shield by Morta's Priest

  • Recommended by: throwaawy, Magic Kirby
  • Crossover with: Harry Potter
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: The world is breaking; war and technology are pushing on the edge of the unbelievable, and S.H.I.E.L.D. desperately attempts to keep the peace. Their newest target is a man called Harry; he is capable of impossible feats and has no clear origin or allegiance. A new piece on the chessboard, one that doesn't follow any of the rules.

What the Cat Dragged In by Kryal

  • Recommended by: raptyr, Mei-may, Clato Lawa, Storygirl000, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Crossover with: Miraculous Ladybug
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Tony's pretty sure it's written into cosmic law somewhere: superheroes are not supposed be cute. Apparently, no one's told these two. He's okay with that.
  • Notes: Alternate link here.
  • Comments: Kryal is a masterful writer and worldbuilder, whose works have been recommended on TV Tropes before. They bring that same level of mastery and thought to What The Cat Dragged In, a wonderful look at how the Avengers would react to the events of Miraculous Ladybug. Told from an outsider perspective, it isn't the average Miraculous Ladybug fic, and stands all the more strongly for it.
    • Seconded. I felt that the explanations for some things went on a bit longer than I wanted, but I enjoyed the story regardless. And Akuma!Tony/Peacemonger was handled excellently.

From the Ashes by Boltstrike58

  • Also on Fanfiction.net.
  • Recommended by: Love Luigi 4 Ever 915
  • Crossover with: My Little Pony.
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The war between the Avengers is over. Neither side has won. The team is scattered. All Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and the others can do now is try to adjust to this new status quo.

Until now.

Pursuit of mysterious thieves leads the Avengers to a new planet, populated by...colorful talking ponies. Oddly enough, these ponies may actually know something about conflict resolution and personal problems. The Avengers had better listen, because only together can they stop a sinister force that plans to bring both Equis and Earth to their knees.

White Houses by LittleMissLiesmith

  • Recommended by: Hannah Hypolita
  • Crossover with: Harvest Moon: Animal Parade
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: After the events of The Avengers, Loki falls again, this time to Midgard—specifically, a small island called Castanet. Peace can never last long, however, and the arrival of just about everyone who's ever even mildly disliked him rather complicates matters.
  • Comments: The idea of Loki as the player character promises fun and the author has promised appearances by the Avengers and the Warriors Three in another thread.

You Must Remember This (otherwise forget it) by yuma

  • Recommended by: SharonToggle
  • Crossover with: Inception

  • Synopsis: Captain America and the Howling Commandos are prepping for a mission, but everything seems slightly off somehow. Plus there are those two odd new corporals...
  • Comments: A beautifully subtle character study of post-Avengers Steve. Alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, the climax will make you cry in the best possible way.
