inklingdeco

  • Synopsis: She writes an ongoing series of fanfictions for Maui, giving him a male love interest in the form of an original character named Makani.
  • Comments: While the movie proper doesn't have any real romantic relationships, who says Maui can't have one? The idea of Maui being interested in a guy is not only cute, but a welcome form of LGBT representation (even if this is just a fan character!) These are written very in-character, and you grow to like the original male character Makani almost instantly. The two are a perfect match, and couple that with beautifully written pieces about Maui's reaction to loving someone mortal, you have a cute series of fics! If you're cool with the idea of Maui having a male love interest, you'll find some good reads here. (She also seemingly takes requests!)

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Where You Are by DistractibleDingo

  • Recommended by: Bookworm Gal
  • Status: Dormant; last updated November 2017
  • Synopsis: There's no denying that Maui and Moana have become lifelong friends, but there's also no denying that the shorter life here is Moana's. As a mortal with no desire to live longer than she normally would, this means she grows up, grows old, and grows to understand she's not the first person Maui had to lose to the ravages of time.
  • Comments: A fantastic series of stories that explore their friendship while delving into more the myths and culture that helped produce the film in the first place.

A Future Imperfect by jadewolf

  • Recommended by: Melly O Hara
  • Status: Dormant; last updated July 2018
  • Synopsis: In Shiny, Tamatoa heavily implied that he and Māui have a shared past. This is the story of that past, told with all the humor and heartbreak that entails — as well as the story of their shared future.
  • Comments: One of the most gorgeously written things I’ve ever read, fanfiction or otherwise. Alternating between sassy, sweet, terrifying, and heart-wrenching, A Future Imperfect is the story of what Māui and Tamatoa once meant to each other, and how they’ve lost — and regained — that relationship over millennia.

Slow Down the Sun by raptormoon

  • Recommended by: Melly O Hara
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Everyone grows old eventually. Everyone, that is, except Māui. After so many centuries of losing those he's loved, you'd think he'd finally get used to it.
  • Comments: This is an incredible bittersweet modern AU that takes a look at a hitherto little-explored facet of Māui’s relationship with Tamatoa. All good things must come to an end. After all... the crab isn't a demigod.

Te Rerenga Wairua by PengyChan

  • Recommended by: Melly O Hara, SashaHoneypalm
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Māui finds out something about himself that leads him on a dangerous quest -– one which will bring him face-to-face with demons both literal and figurative.
  • Comments: Action-packed and downright hilarious, Te Rerenga Wairua — te Reo for "voyage of the soul" — picks up where the movie left off, and tells a breathtaking story of betrayal, death, and giant snarky lizard monsters.

Where We Are by Mighty Dreamfinder

  • Recommended by: Melly O Hara
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Moana summons Māui to her side one last time.
  • Comments: Moana takes after Gramma Tala a lot more than is shown in the movie. Decades after she helped him restore the Heart of Te Fiti, Māui is called upon by a very changed Moana, who needs his help on a quest of her own. This is also beautifully written, and I look forward to the finished product!

I thought it was a dream. by refectory (Wayback Machine)

  • Comments: Nice take on the popluar Moana becomes a demigod trope.

Gloriole By WonderWafles

  • Synopsis: AU: Roleswap: "The first time he sees her, she is clothed in stars."

Shipping Fics

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Hooked Wayfinders series by BadOctopus

  • Recommended by: Tiggerific
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A collection of stories about the developing relationship between Moana and Maui.
  • Pairing: Moana/Maui
  • Comments: Moana and Maui are so in character that you'd think these stories are an official continuation of the movie.

Add A Little Sugar by Pappels

  • Recommended by: Melly O Hara
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A twist on Māui/human!Tamatoa, where the latter wants to pursue a romance with the former despite the rather large age gap between them.
  • Pairing: Māui/Tamatoa
  • Comments: Although, at first glance, I was apprehensive, I quickly realized that the author does a great job of balancing sweetness with snark, and develops a slow, comfortable, *real* relationship between the two characters. Human!Tamatoa is also a great character and written in such a way that I can practically picture him in my mind. DISCLAIMER: I do not read explicit scenes, so I did only briefly skim over the tenth chapter here. However, the previous nine and the last one are very PG, and I enjoyed them!

Ka lā hiki ola by slice_of_fiction

  • Recommended by: Melly O Hara
  • Status: Dormant; last updated September 2020
  • Synopsis: Modern AU. McKenna Wolford didn't go looking for trouble. Trouble came looking for her. In the shape of a large, brawny, outrageously attractive Demi-God wielding a fish hook. Life can become one big mess if you're not careful.
  • Pairing: Māui/OC
  • Comments: Thousands of years after the movie’s events, Motunui is hesitant to open its borders to outsiders — because Māui isn’t the only one who’s set their sights on the Heart of Te Fiti. Features first-person POV, which is a tough cookie to get right (but this author did admirably!)

The Sound of Love by raptormoon

  • Recommended by Bee 123
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Tui realizes he's in love with Sina."
  • Pairing: Tui Waialiki/Sina Waialiki
  • Comments: Sweet short love story. I really loved the OCs in this.

Pleasant Surprise by Tae Fansick

  • Recommended by Tito Mosquito
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: M! Moana x Maui .Rated M just in case. I love genderbent Moana Moana has regular massage appointments but is in for a shock.
  • Pairing: Maui/Male!Moana
  • Comments: A nice short m/m Modern AU story. My only nitpick is that male!Moana is still called Moana (an obvious feminine name).
