These are recommendations made by tropers for Magic Kaito Fan Fics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.
Do warn when a fanfic may head into romantic or non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.
You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.
Additional Note: Due to the canon's constant Crossovers and Canon Welding with Case Closed, many stories will assume a baseline familiarity with supporting casts and Myth Arcs of both.note Indeed, a number of early Magic Kaito fics remain in Fanfiction.net's Detective Conan section despite featuring no Conan characters apart from Kid himself. Capable of heartwarming fluff, hilarious crack, and bone-chilling darkness in equal measure. Check out her Fanfic 100 compilation for samples of all of the above, then consider a glance at:
- Sorrowful Soul - in which Aoko finds an awfully familiar stranger two months after Kaito's disappearance, and it turns out Pandora has certain ways of dealing with those who try to destroy it.
- 40 Nights: Kaito and Aoko - in which Kaito and Aoko find forty different ways to demonstrate love, hate, and everything in-between.
- A Perfect Act - in which a bloody rooftop confrontation leads to a new understanding between Kid and Inspector Nakamori. Featuring sequels No Little Plans and Both Dark and Deep that bring the Case Closed cast into their post-endgame adventures with mystery and mayhem galore. Be warned, though: some of the villains herein Would Hurt a Child... and then some.

- Comments: An excellent author with introspective works on the characters, though all of them are listed under the Case Closed tag. Lots of focus on the characters' inner thoughts and how their problems are all tied together, as well as some psychoanalysis from an OC, psychologist Cade Maboroshi. Plenty of mythology integrated as well, with an entire series, titled Supernatural, dedicated to resolving the main conflicts of Magic Kaito and Case Closed in a fantastical but satisfying way (and eventually crossing over with The Real Ghostbusters). POV characters include Kaito Kuroba, Saguru Hakoba, and Toichi Kuroba.

- Comments: Only a handful of works so far, but radiating the care and Worldbuilding you'd typically expect from five authors. Not to be perused on a short attention span.
- Schrodinger's Detective - In which the KID Capture Brigade decides to investigate the bizarre disappearance of one Shinichi Kudo. Cue action, intrigue, and a lovingly-painted picture of just how bizarre Shinichi's status would look to any outsiders who actually pay attention.
- Dominoes - In-progress Door Stopper Super Fic that's also quite possibly the most brutal Deconstruction Fic you'll find in the fandom. You'll never look at Kid Hero teams,their adult mentors, or Kaito's life-calling the same way again. Oh, and as far as Shipping goes... beware brutal sinking of the S.S. Shinichi x Ran, with Shinichi x Kaito rising in its wake.

- Synopsis: First things first: find a target. (A list of things to keep in mind if you're going to be a teenage phantom thief. And you are. You don't have a choice.)
- Comments: One thing I really wish the MK anime and manga focused more on was just how much planning it has to take for Kaito to pull off his heists, and despite the corny summary this fic does a brilliant job of it.

- Synopsis: Kaito is terrible at being sick. But that’s okay, because Toichi knows exactly how to handle him.(Because I think 8 year old Kaito is adorable.)
- Comments: There is a terribly sad lack of fics about how Kaito's childhood, because with Toichi and Chikage as parents and Kaito knowing all the ecletic skills he does WITHOUT knowing his parents were thieves, it must have been A Ride. This is by far the best fic I've found about it! Nothing about thieving, but a normal day in a normal life where your son does things like sneaking into the car trunk with a flu to watch your magic show. Sometimes you just have to pick your battles...

- Synopsis: “Okie-dokes.” Kuroba shakes himself, and then turns to wave at the waiting group of suspects and witnesses with a reassuring smile. They stare blankly at him.
“They’re traumatized, Kaito-san.”
“I know. That’s why I’m being nice.”
Shinichi grabs Kuroba’s jacket and starts yanking him toward the group, ignoring his annoyed muttering. In Kuroba’s defense, he’s very good at looking reassuring. It’s just a lot less effective when he’s standing next to the corpse.

When a magician seemingly murders an audience member in the middle of a show, no one but Conan can even begin to figure out all the tricks of this case. Naturally, Megure talks to Nakamori, who recommends the one and only magic expert that he knows: Kuroba Kaito. - Comments: EVERYONE GO READ THIS RIGHT NOW this has to be by FAR my favorite depiction of "Edogawa Conan Meets Kuroba Kaito" I can't explain why. Maybe because Conan's biting inner monologue is ON POINT and perhaps because them immediately sussing out each other's secret ID is far too boring yet far too common, and that DOESN'T happen here for once? What happens instead is that they meet each other and bc they're perceptive IMMEDIATELY go "what the HELL is WRONG with this guy" BUT!! they leave the alter egos out of it!! bc you can notice there's PLENTY weird w these two without getting into all that djhdsgfh it's like - they know they're Weird but not Why, yknow? bc the cause of the weirdness is BONKERS! who'd guess that!! and Conan is too busy solving the murder mystery to justify digging into the Kaito mystery, and he KNOWS they're family friends so he's trying hard not to spook him away.

- Comments: Heavy-duty fluff to bring a smile to your face! Shinichi and Kaito being roommates could lead to many things, this being one of the funniest situations. Kaito's making it very hard for Shinichi to keep plausible deniability!

- Comments: And this is the other situation that could come from the "Shinichi and Kaito as roommates" situation, what with Kaito being markedly terrible at taking off his masks and being honest about his troubles- Shinichi comes in with the heavy-duty concern! A couple of doors may need kicking down.

- Synopsis: Kaito's not sure what made Shinichi look at him and decide: 'that guy. right there. We're gonna get acquainted.' But he's not complaining. He would, however, like to lodge a complaint over the visiting hours.
- Comments: Shinichi weaponizes friendship to get Kaito to take care of himself, which would sound weird until you realize that yeah, it's Kaito who doesn't have a wide support net, who pretends to be clueless and dumb despite not having to pass for a six-year-old, and whom we are always wondering about what he really thinks and feels. So it honestly feels much more true to canon this way! Plus I like how Shinichi finding out Kuroba is KID is only the beginning instead of the goal.

- Synopsis: Pulling his phone from his pocket, Shinichi went to dial Nakamori’s number but stopped himself at the last digit. The best hope KID had was in alerting the Task Force, Shinichi knew as well. They would be able to provide the necessary treatment needed for the thief to survive, but it would mean turning him in. It would mean an unsatisfactory end to a rivalry that was only beginning to grow. Shinichi had only recently stepped back into the limelight and had been able to face KID as his true self, the heist itself was one of the first attended by Kudo Shinichi. To call now would bring it all to a close. KID heist goes awry, as it's wont to do. Shinichi decides he's going to do something illegal. He's rewarded with trust issues.
- Comments: Kaito and trust issues bc he can't afford to trust anyone with all facets of himself, someone being there to see the facade drop and get the gut-wrenching realization that Kaito is always, always wearing a mask...what can I say, I know what I like and this fic hits all my sucker buttons right outta the park.

- Comments: If I had a penny for every fic I found with the premise "Kaito and Conan end up in the same lodge and Conan disappears so Kaito has to go look for him" I'd have two pennies. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice. Every exchange between Conan and Kaito here is quite fun and very true to their relationship in my head.

It's tagged spectrophilia, and I was originally against reading it, but not in the way you're thinking. Be prepared to cry. Lament the tragedy of possibilities. Think about your life and how your death will be taken, etc. joisbishmyoga is a beautiful authour, and this was the fic that drew me to them first.

Meanwhile, Aoko grabs her own team to figure out exactly where her best friend disappeared off to and uncover the uncomfortable truth about his disappearance.
