Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: One: Laird John Hamilton loves his brother, perhaps more than James deserves; in the end, it is an easy thing to arrange ship’s passage for two small boys to Glasgow. Two: For a bastard nephew striking out on his own, a commission in His Majesty’s Army is a gift from Providence; it would be foolish to throw away this shot. Three: On a brisk day in late November 1778, dried leaves crunching under his boots, General Washington encounters a young redcoat in the woods.
  • Comments: Hamilton is a redcoat AU that goes to interesting places.

  • Synopsis: The summer after publishing the Reynolds Pamphlet, Alexander Hamilton takes a trip to Philadelphia with Philip, Angelica, and Alex Jr.

i'll make the world (safe and sound for you) by Chrome

  • Recommended by azurekiwi
  • Status: Dormant (last updated March 2016)
  • Synopsis: The worst week of Alexander Hamilton's life starts with a phone call from Columbia Hospital. And that's not counting the gun control bill, his eldest daughter's declining mental health, and his ongoing Twitter war with Abigail Adams.
  • Comments: Modern AU that does an amazing job exploring the aftermath of Philip's shooting and gives more depth to the rest of Alex and Eliza's children.

  • Status: Hiatus
  • Pairings: Aaron Burr/Alexander Hamilton, multiple background relationships
  • Synopsis: “Alexander Hamilton! I’m at your service, sir!” Aaron looks at the hand and doesn’t take it. His hands are safely in his pocket, but he’d taken off his gloves, and he is not particularly in the mood to feel the single most consequential juncture of a stranger’s life. Alexander is still grinning at him, and the moment is stretching on, and he refuses to put his hand down, and Aaron has about half a second before this staring contest verges beyond the mere impolite and into the territory of heavy, awkward weight and scattered excuses—and before he can think better of it, Aaron takes Alexander’s hand.
  • Comments: One of the best stories I've ever read period. It takes a simple idea- what if Aaron Burr was a seer?- and creates a complex, time-line bending, almost 200,000 words and counting adventure with a mind-boggling amount of thought and research put into it. It's unfinished as of now, but the author updates regularly. Don’t let the fact there is a main pairing scare you into thinking this fic is primarily about romance—it’s not. Has its own Fan Verse, including but not limited to a mostly-complete script and a few recorded songs of a musical made by the fic’s author based on the fic’s events, and Recursive Fanfiction.

Notes Concerning Certain Performances of Hamilton by scioscribe

  • Recommended by: Pentagonsama, thebadplace
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: They're in the play! (They go through the requisite amount of hey, this doesn’t look like heaven, this looks like a theater!, which takes… more time than you might think, especially since they aren’t all speaking to each other.)
  • Comments: A relatively short meta fic. Excellent character study and a very interesting, original concept.

our gilded age by screamlet

  • Recommended by: thebadplace
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Hamilton modern AU in which roles/cabinet positions are 1794-ish: Washington's fifth year in office, Burr a senator from NY, Hamilton as the Treasury Secretary, and I've kept Jefferson on as Secretary of State for fun. Angelica is the dean of Columbia Law School. Everyone is a goddamn lawyer. John Laurens is alive.
  • Comments: A very funny modern AU.

Our Narrative by musiceclectic

  • Recommended by: Pren
  • Status: Dormant (last updated May 2017)
  • Synopsis: In a world where certain people have reincarnated in the present day and are the new objects of hatred, John Laurens discovers Hamilton's new identity. Just one problem: he hasn't yet regained his memories of his past life.
  • Comments: A fascinating setting that maps perfectly onto the homophobic stigma Hamilton and Laurens faced in their first lives, and very moving along the way.

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Theodosia Burr in the aftermath of it all, building herself up from the wreckage, because she was nothing but the pure resilience and brilliance of someone who, unhindered, would take this world by storm.
  • Pairings: Past Aaron Burr/Theodosia Prevost Burr, Implied Past Jonathan Bellamy/Aaron Burr, Preslash Theodosia Burr/Angelica Hamilton
  • Comments: Theodosia’s aftermath if Alexander Hamilton killed Theodosia’s father, Aaron Burr, in the duel, instead of the other way around. The pairings are not the primary focus of the fic whatsoever.

  • Recommended by Lyra_Dhani
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The young men in Washington’s command appeared to hold at once the contradictory beliefs that, in the first place, he was omniscient and that, in the second place, he was too daft to notice what was happening right underneath his own nose; no one epitomized this habit so much as Hamilton, who was at that very moment laboring under the misapprehension that Washington was somehow unaware of the scrape he’d gotten into.

Closest Friend I've Got bythatwritermadeofpotatoes

  • Recommended by Cupcakeswirl
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Pairing: John Laurens/Alexander Hamilton, Elizabeth Hamilton/Hercules Mulligan
  • Synopsis: Hamilton and Laurens are hard at work, writing essays against slavery. That is, until the death of one of their own take them on a trip to Ireland, where they learn that they have no control over who lives or who dies.
  • Comments: A really touching story, one that will stay in your mind long after it's finished. 21,000 words and counting, this story has a simple, yet poignant and beautifully written storyline.

life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and the sequel a little closer to home by Ianthine

  • Recommended by: Pentagonsama
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Thomas Jefferson/James Madison
  • Synopsis: Despite having to raise two kids by himself, Thomas Jefferson's got his life under control. At least until he finds out his daughter's new Government teacher is the guy he had a one-night stand with. From there, things get a little more complicated.
  • Comments: A modern-day single parent AU. Very cute fanfic with over 65000 words and just enough drama to make it interesting. It incorporates historical elements very well and excellently characterizes Jefferson and Madison as well as the several historical "original" side characters. Avoids falling into common fanfic pitfalls and is generally very realistic in its portrayal of the central relationship. A personal favourite.

someone else's story by iaintinapatientphase

  • Recommended by: Pentagonsama, thebadplace
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Maria Reynolds/Alexander Hamilton, implied Maria Reynolds/James Reynolds
  • Synopsis: This isn’t a love story, not at all. Maria doesn't like to dwell on it, but that doesn't make it any less true. Maria, Secretary Hamilton, and that summer.
  • Comments: Exploration of a modern-day Reynolds affair, from Maria's perspective, with around 16000 words. Maria's characterization in particular is excellent and Hamilton's good and bad side are both acknowledged and examined. Delves into the rather skewed presentation of Maria's character in the musical and seeks to portray her and her role in the Reynolds scandal in a more sympathetic light. Warning for dubcon. Has a short follow-up fic that takes place after the events of the main fic that portrays the effects the affair had on Maria's life and a friendship between her and Burr.

Non-Stop by writelikeitsgoingoutofstyle

  • Recommended by: CaptainMegaDong
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Alexander Hamilton/Aaron Burr, Lafayette/John Laurens
  • Synopsis: Alexander Hamilton never intended to get hooked on drugs when he entered college, but writing papers was the most reliable way he knew to get cash. And the most reliable way to get more work done, well, that was uppers. He was doing his best to tread water, get his own work and everyone else's done along the way when his dealer got spooked and refused to play ball with him anymore. Aaron Burr was just a sophomore student trying to keep his head down and not draw any attention to himself, a hard thing to do when rooming with Thomas Jefferson's middle man, James Madison. A goal that became even more impossible when he made the rash decision to help Alex get sober in the wake of being left dealer-less.
  • Comments: An incredibly well done modern AU that stays in character, and follows a completely original plot. Runs about 125,000 words, and 109 chapters, so sit down for the long haul with this one. The sequel is still in progress, and has about the same numbers. Clear your schedule before you start reading, because it's just about impossible to put down once you start. On the bright side, the reason the fic is so long is because the author updates at a ridiculously impressive rate. For example, in Non-Stop, the six chapter climax all got written and posted on the same day. Lafayette and Laurens meet and start dating in the background, but after becoming an established couple, get their relationship written amazingly well. Alexander and Aaron start off as fake dating, and it is the slow burn to end all slow burns. Warnings for (obviously) drug use and addiction, as well as offscreen noncon and abuse.

Want Ad by thelittlelion

  • Recommended by: Orbiting
  • Status: Dormant
  • Pairing: Alexander Hamilton/Aaron Burr
  • Synopsis: Modern AU. Alexander Hamilton is a high-ranking aid to Mayor Washington, and recently the subject of scandal after his wife divorced him after learning of his affair with Maria Reynolds. Aaron Burr is a struggling single father who's slipping into alcoholism after the death of his wife. Alexander puts out a want ad for a 'caretaker'; someone to keep him on-track and from doing something stupid. Aaron Burr needs money to care for his daughter, and has always been could at acting like he knows what he's doing.
  • Comments: Slow burn, with an exploration of the consequences of Hamilton's affair on his relationship with his wife and kids (kids, plural; his children other than Phillip also exist).

  • Pairings: Alexander Hamilton/Eliza Schuyler/John Laurens/Maria Reynolds, Marquis de Lafayette/George Washington, Thomas Jefferson/Hercules Mulligan
  • Synopsis: Reincarnation College Groupchat AU. The Hamilsquad is at college guys, and guess what, they all fucking remember lol
  • Comments: I love this so much. Even though I'm not into some of the ships, everyone is in character and literally every story (45, not counting the multi-chaptered backstory fic written in regular prose and all of the other stories others have written) is hilarious. Go read it now.

Team Shithead 'Verse by pocky_slash

  • Recommended by: 8Lottie8
  • Status: Hiatus as the author prefers to have fics fully-written before posting
  • Pairings: Alexander Hamilton/John Laurens
  • Synopsis: The modern AU where they're all ostensibly studying and hunting ghosts, but mostly they're just assholes with a lot of feelings. (Some stories contain smut)
  • Comments: This is amazing - over 400k words and they've only just finished their first year of grad school (and the summer that follows).

Oceans and Moments by RebelFaerie

  • Recommended by: knk6700
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Lafayette/Peggy Schuyler
  • Synopsis: Peggy had resigned herself to being the Schuyler sister nobody remembered. But that was before that winter evening, when a certain French lieutenant appeared at her sister's wedding and changed everything. AU romance following Lafayette and Peggy's adventures through the American and French Revolutions.
  • Comments: Oh my goodness! This was absolutely amazing. I don’t know what I was expecting when I went to read this fic, but it wasn’t what I just read. Though I absolutely loved it. It was so good that even though it took me roughly 2 days to read, I almost went back and read it a second time (I actually did end up starting it over again that’s how good it was). This was done so amazingly. And despite being an AU, it still says consistent with some historical facts and such.

  • Synopsis: A Wide-Open Sandbox fic setting, in which Eliza was an amateur witch, and managed to put the dying Alexander into a magical stasis. Then Ichabod and Abbie wake him up just in time for him to discover how the musical has revived interest in his life while adjusting to the present day.
  • Comments: Alternately funny, moving, and exciting, and always true to character. A must-see for fans of present day fics.
    • Despite not knowing much about Sleepy Hollow, this troper quickly became engaged in the story, with it's interesting concepts and likeable OCs. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything new in quite a while, which is rather frustrating...

  • Crossover with: Descendants
  • Synopsis: There's a certain bastard orphan who was born on the Isle of the Lost who isn't satisfied (he's never satisfied) with his life. He writes his way out of hell after the barrier spares the Isle a direct hit from a hurricane. Now he's headed to the Mainland and ready to correct the injustices he's seen in life. The world will never be the same. One-shot, complete.
  • Comments: A brilliant combination of Hamilton and Descendants that works surprisingly well, especially with Hamilton's song lyrics woven into the text. Hamilton's backstory is worked into the Isle of the Lost, and how he rose to greatness to leave the Isle once and for all. A must-read for fans of both Hamilton and Descendants.

Featuring Raymond the cat as Hamilton, Sheldon the squirrel as Laurens (and later Philip Hamilton), Stu the bull as Mulligan (and later Madison), Audie the fox as Peggy (and later Maria), Phil the ostrich as Washington, and Villagers as Burr, Lafayette, Angelica, Eliza, King George, Jefferson, etc. Part 1 has been completed., as has Part 2.

Hamilton but it's the Muppets by Ricky Downes III.

  • Recommended by MissGemKnight
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: The Muppets
  • Synopsis: Similar to the above, a re-enactment of each song in Hamilton but with Muppet and other Jim Henson characters. Featuring Kermit as Hamilton, Gonzo as Aaron Burr, Fozzie as LaFozzette (and later Thomas Jefferson), Miss Piggy as Eliza, and Beaker as Laurens (and later Phillip), to name a few.
  • Comments: A very well-done musical performance, with wonderful impressions of all the characters. The first part is nice, but the second part is where it truly shines, with more Muppet-y humor and callbacks to several other parts of the franchise (this troper just about lost it when the "red-handed" joke from Muppet Caper was referenced). It genuinely feels like an official Muppet retelling in parts, and is worth any fan's time.
