  • Has written just short of sixty Kagehina (Kageyama Tobio/Hinata Shouyou) and similar slash fics. Fics vary in length and rating, but overall are very well written, including a number of one-shots. If you ship Kagehina, this author's work is a goldmine, and worth reading. Warning to watch out for ratings and read the tags, if it says "E" it means "E".

  • Do you like minor characters, less popular or rarepair ships, and well-executed wit? If you said yes to any of these, or even no, Memorde is an author you should check out. You may not think you ship Ennoshita and Futakuchi, but read one of Memorde's fics and you will. On of my personal favorites is by any other name, a lighthearted Tsukkiyama fic that's sweet and re-readable.

A Split-Second of Violence and Alternate Perspectives on A Split-Second of Violence by Laura of Maychoria

  • Recommended by: Chiruka Hisanagi
  • Status: Complete and Dead (last updated 2015-03-22) respectively
  • Sypnosis: Hinata is loud. Hinata is annoying. Hinata is also passionate and sunny and bright, and so full of joyful energy that he brings out the best in everyone around him, even if they occasionally want to slap his head to make him shut up for awhile. When a split second of violence threatens to take all of this away, Karasuno responds with a fury.
  • Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Friendship, platonic cuddling
  • Comments: Realistic, at least in Haikyuu universe. The author focuses on Kageyama's POV mostly, but the second fic provides the POV of other characters. The first part of the story involved graphic descriptions of violence, more so because of flashbacks of the witnesses. The process of healing is believable and written beautifully (poor our little cinnamon roll). Althought the third-years didn't show up as much until near the end, they're very supportive and bad-ass.
  • Warnings: graphic violence, description of injuries and blood, bullying, mental trauma.

Crumbling Foundations by Captain_Hughes_ZU and ToshiChan

  • Recommended by: Sophiebybophie
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: Things like this didn't happen in Karasuno. It was just a school. Learning, making friends, taking exams and playing volleyball. Lots of volleyball. So it was really nothing out of the ordinary for the team to be in the gym on a simple Monday morning, training away. But two men walking into the gym with guns, one demanding to take his son? That wasn't ordinary, not at all...
  • Tags: Suspense, Hurt/Comfort.
  • Comments: Okay, I'll admit I was scared to read this at first. I even saved it as a bookmark for the longest time. Just, I was worried about what would happen to the little crows of Karasuno we all love. But, After finally reading this AMAZING work, I'm so happy I read it! I'm so relieved to find I had nothing to worry about. This author did an extraordinary job as keeping the reader at the edge of their seat! Really, just go read it yourself it's great!
  • Warnings: There is some violence.

Fly By by AceLee

  • Recomended by: Blaidd Dunn
  • Status: Dead (last updated 2020-08-15)
  • Synopsis: Hinata's first year started off great. He's on the Volleyball team at Karasuno High School, the same school as his hero, the Little Giant. Sure some things could be better. He could be taller, have better grades or stop running into these bigger and scarier second-years, but he was still getting tosses so he wasn't complaining. Maybe he should though...(Or times someone found Hinata dealing with bullies and 1 time Karasuno looked after their own)
  • Tags: 5+1 format (ish), Protective Team, Bullying, Hurt/comfort
  • Comments: This is really good- a realistic take on bullying in line with the tone of Haikyuu, and the POVs of all the characters are engaging and in character. Really worth a look.

  • Status: Dead (last updated 2017-03-01)
  • Synopsis: It's time for a change. Hinata goes to Karasuno High School determined to make the most out of his high school life. What he didn't expect was being dragged into the game he had sworn he would one day leave but was still unable to do. Well, he might just begin to love volleyball again like he had before everything changed.
  • Tags: gen - Freeform, Friendship, Sports, Volleyball, Hinata!Strong, Slight Drama, Slight AU,
  • Comments: WHY HAVE I NOT READ THIS BEFORE?! The characterization, the plot, the everything!! It's just so good! I honestly had a great time reading this, nothing was slow or dragging. It was perfect. It's about a Hinata that still loves volleyball but, for some unrelieved reason, he doesn't want to play it anymore. It starts around the beginning of high school.

A storm captures the volleyball teams from Fukurodani, Karasuno and Nekoma upon Kirayama, trapping them there. Connection to the outside world is cut, and when a freak murder occurs and a student goes missing, they have no way to call for help. • Comments: This oneshot is a Hurt/Comfort character piece on Hinata Shouyou that hits in a way very few do. It's extremely realistic and authentic to the very specific emotions of having acheived your life goals and the fear of the future after that. Genuinly touching and brilliant.

A Murder of Crows and Two Crows Shot of a Murder by Mur

  • Recommended by: Komodo Classic
  • Status: Oneshots
  • Synopsis: (A Murder of Crows): Yamaguchi Tadashi was 100% certain there was something strange about the second and third years of the Karasuno Boys' Volleyball team. The thing was, he had no way to prove it. It was just a feeling. A feeling, and the way their eyes darkened when they reached for the ball, and the way people went missing after any altercations with their first years. All of that, and the fact that one by one, his fellow first years were becoming just like them.
  • Comments: Chilling. But also strangely sweet in places? Definitely some creeping horror involved. Good endings for both. I would recommend reading A Murder of Crows first, and then the prequel Two Crows Short of a Murder, which provides an origin story and explanation for the crows.
  • Warnings: Creeping horror, disturbing imagery, graphic descriptions of blood and gore, a bit of cannibalism. Excellent, but rated E for good reason.

All in the Cards by Killthespare

  • Recommended by: Blaidd Dunn
  • Status: Complete- part of a series of three stories that are all complete
  • Pairing(s): Hinata Shouyou/Kageyama Tobio, Iwaizumi Hajime/Oikawa Tooru Sawamura Daichi/Sugawara Koushi Tsukishima Kei/Yamaguchi Tadashi, and Hinata Shouyou & Tsukishima Kei (platonic/sibling- but arguably more important to the plot than most of the romantic pairings.
  • Synopsis: The Card Kingdoms Stand United. ...of course, this would be a lot easier if Hearts had their King. It's too bad that Oikawa Tooru emphatically does not want the job. Meanwhile, the threat of war looms on the horizon and Hinata Shouyou just uncovered a plot that could rock the entire kingdom to the core.
  • Comments/Tags: Cards AU Action/Mystery and political drama. This stands as one of the best developed Cards AU's I've seen- each kingdom having a solid system and experience of this particular magical inheritance= political power system which gets deeper and more entwinned with the characters and their relationships with every installment. The characters are interesting and distict and feel like a natural development from their canon selves if socialised into their roles in this world. It also features Tendou as a litteral God of Chaos and Ushijima as the worlds most belligerant fairy godmother- a pair of casting choices which made me grin everytime they turned up.

but for me, there is a storm by Authoress

  • Recomended by: Blaidd Dunn
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Sometimes you have to make choices you don’t like, or will regret into countless sleepless nights, and sometimes you’re just following orders. But if the other option is certain death for your entire species, you will make those decisions. That’s what it means to be a pilot. …Or so Daichi and Sugawara keep telling themselves as they activate the two least compatible recruits for the much-needed third Jaeger assist. The kaiju are learning, evolving, and coming in faster than anyone is comfortable with, and the only option left is to evolve with them. Who knows? Maybe the rookies will be the ones to turn the tide of the war.
  • Pairings: Kagayama/Hinata, Daichi/Sugawara, Tsukishima/Yamaguchi (and many, many more)
  • Tags: Pacific Rim AU, Adventure, Drama, Rivals-to-Friends-to-Lovers, some sexual scenes, Graphic Violence, and Major Character Death
  • Comments: this is a fic of staggering scope (276,138 words) and complexity. Starting from the basics of trying to bring together the 'oddball pair' of test pilots Kagayama and Hinata to pilot an experimental Jeager it quickly spirals out into a scifi epic about love and war staring *most of the main cast* - following the three main pairings accross multiple arcs full of danger and excitement. The story ramps up the danger pretty naturally, and once I picked it up I found it almost impossible to put down.

Come Morning Light by SharkbaitSekki

  • Recommended by: blupengu
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Life seemed to cease at the moment of the explosion, but then there was quiet whimpering in the air and the feeling of warm bodies pressed up against each other and the horrifying stench of terror that was tided over by the sight of each other, by the sight of all of them, still alive and breathing despite the horrors of this world on fire. In which all of the aspects of their future are uncertain, except for the fact that Karasuno will always be their home.
  • Comments/tags: Realistic apocalypse AU centered around the Karasuno boys that's goes on a rollercoaster of emotions. It's a long but extremely captivating read that I have poured hours into reading without realizing it. As expected, there's psychological horrors, Karasuno boys supporting each other, and some violence, but an eventual happy end. Not really any romance and no smut, but the guys do find comfort within their new family.

Don't Make Me Walk When I Want To Fly by MissKiraBlue

  • Recommended by: Jx H
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "I don't want to leave without an apology". After Hinata rushed from their fight he ended up in a car accident. But when he wakes up he's not dead and he's not in a hospital either. Hinata has to live the same day – the day when he and Kageyama fought – over and over again until he finds a solution where he could get out of the time loop. But when the time comes, will Hinata have enough strength and bravery to do what has to be done?
  • Pairing(s): Hinata Shouyou/Kageyama Tobio
  • Tags: Angst with Happy ending, Time Loop
  • Comments: Extremely powerful. It has a longer sequel which explores Iwasumi's time loop (also complete), and another sequel exploring Kageyama's time loop (In progress and making steady updates as of writing). The author describes this as an AU of what could have happened after the season 2 episode 5 fight. (Which is why its in the AU section)

  • Synopsis: Ever since Kageyama was young, he heard a voice. it was soft at first, and he didn't give it notice. Except, slowly, it began to take more precedence, and that voice made him feel just a little less lonely with every, "Don't mind, once more."
  • Pairing(s): Kageyama/Hinata
  • Comments: It's one the best fics I've read in this fandom. It's a heartwrenching Fic that made me feel so bad the Kageyama's loneliness that in the end I don't know if I shed tears from sorrow or happiness. Probably both.
  • Tags: Angst with happy ending, IC, AU Canon Divergence, afterlife.

Fox in the Hole by boomturkey

  • Recommended by: Olly One
  • Status: Complete, and part of a series of four stories all of which are also complete
  • Pairings: slow-burn Hinata Shouyou/Miya Atsumu
  • Synopsis: Hinata Shouyou moves to Hyougo and loses his first and last middle school volleyball game. In the process he somehow manages to gain two somewhat mean and confusing new friends: Miya Atsumu and Miya Osamu. Their goal: Get Hinata to Inarizaki so he can play volleyball with them.
  • Comments: This fantastic For Want Of A Nail Fic where Hinata goes to Inarizaki rather than Karusuno brings an original flavour to Haikyuu which is fun and hooks me harder than a trout in fly-water fishing season. The Miya twins are brilliant- Atsumu in particular threads the needle between suitibly bratty and sweetly sympathetic that makes him a joy to read about. Shinsuke is a stable and fantastic senpai/big brother figure, and Hinata is his intense and sweet self as per canon. A joy to read.

  • Pairing: Male slash. Kageyama/Hinata.
  • Tags: Suspense, Thriller, Romance, Superpowers, Hurt/Comfort.
  • Comments:
  • Warnings:
    • Authors Note: I honestly don't think this would rate much more than PG-13 in terms of content...Actually, the first chapter (opening scenes) are probably the darkest the story ever gets, so if those are OK, then nothing else should be too upsetting. But the opening scenes might be upsetting. Just saying.

He Waits For a Miracle by ich_bin_ein_stern

  • Recommended by: Gintama200
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The minute after they defeat Shiratorizawa, Kageyama time traveled back to his worst year at Kitagawa Daiichi. While Kageyama struggles through another year, he tries to better himself and reforge broken friendships along the way as he deals with his problems at home.
  • Pairing(s): Male Slash. Kageyama/Hinata
  • Tags: Time Travel, Slow Build, Child Neglect, Eventual Happy Ending
  • Comments: This is a heartwrenching Fic and the writer really makes you feel for everything Kageyama goes through in the Fic. His homelife is realistically portrayed as it reflects his behaviour at school and Kageyama's parents aren't your typical abusive characters, either. Though, Hinata does appear later, its not until a few chapters in as the story focuses on his previous relationships at Kitagawa Daiichi. Highly recommend it.

Justice and Duty by KaenOkami

Shouyou is having none of it.
  • Comments: A criminally underrated crime drama oneshot where the relationships of Haikyuu are transposed onto a yakuza gang. It packs a dense amount of characterisation and wordbuilding into a bitesized chunk which had me thinking about it all week.

  • Pairings: slow burn Oikawa Tooru/Iwaizumi Hajime and Sawamura Daichi/Sugawara Koushi
  • Synopsis:Kageyama does not so much choose Hinata at the pound as find the boy stuck in the tree in his garden.(AKA the sort-of Lilo and Stitch AU that nobody asked for.)
  • Comments: A unique Lilo and Stitch AU which is as much about the family drama of orphans Oikawa and Kageyama and the space cop/mad sceintist enemies-to-lovers Daichi/Sugawara as it is about the L+S inspired sibling drama of Hinata and Kageyama. It's fun, sweet, and well written charecter drama. Plus, it has Kiyoko and Asahi as Men in Black- a draw in itself.

Lovesick by foucqure

  • Recommended by: Blaidd Dunn
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Hinata Shouyou/Kageyama Tobio
  • Synopsis: Boy meets boy, each becomes a witness, then accessory to each other's crime, and they might just do crime together.
  • Comments: This one-shot is 'be gay, do crimes': the fic. Both boys are serial killers, though Kageyama is of the controlled assassin type whereas Hinata is a barely hinged axe murderer with a death wish. Oddly their characterisation works perfectly- tacking their canon selves and warping them through the lense of murder vision untill they're suitably twisted to be recognisable but unique. The fic itself is an odd-ball rom-com, which again works fantasticly with a sort of grim black comedy vibe which is both fun and memorable. Seriously, give it a look.

  • Status: Fic Complete; series Dormant (last updated 2022-12-23)
  • Synopsis: On a rare sunny morning in late August, a man stood poised to knock on the front door of Privet Orphanage. His name was Ittetsu Takeda, Transfiguration Professor and Deputy Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Takeda was here to deliver a very special invitation to a very special boy by the name of Shouyou Hinata.
  • Comments/tags: Harry Potter AU (obvs.), with and Ensaumble cast, and a focus on friendship and worldbuilding. Unlike Harry Potter, Shouyou is a muggle born, a difference that ripples through the story and makes it much more engaging. This is a brilliant action adventure that is more taking cues from Harry Potter than simply retreading the plot points, which gives the whole series a sense of tension and unpredicatablity. All the characters are fantasticly written with interesting relationships, but special comendation must go to the Oikawa&Hinata belligerant mentorship which is funny, thoughtful, and unique.

  • Pairings: Oikawa/Iwaizumi & pre- Kageyama/Hinata
  • Comments: A pair of cute, funny short fics where Oikawa adopts our favourite Vollyball Idiots and they meddle in his life. Major Character Deaths inherent in the concept, and they are a little like having your heart torn out, but overall this is a warm, family comedy that made me giggle for hours.

This Bittersweet World by viktory_arts

  • Recommended by: Vn B
  • Status: Dead (last updated 2021-01-24)
  • Synopsis: Hinata Shouyou was one of those ghouls; born into a world where human-ghoul relations were shaky and unstable at best and downright violent at worst. Humans feared ghouls, so Shouyou pretended to be human to negate this. His mother always told him to hide his nature or he would be killed for not coming out sooner to the government. And so he did.
  • Comments: This Tokyo Ghoul AU is incomplete but intriguing and in character enough that it always leaves me wanting more. The best description would be suspense and supernatural horror- though most of the horror comes from the risk of the humans finding Hinata's identity as an unrelated spree of violent ghoul attacks hits the school rather than the Hinata's family need to eat human corpses. A fun time, even if it leaves us on the edge of a cliff at the end.

He doesn't really have a lot of friends because of what happened in his old volley ball team. Lonely and bored, Kageyama bumps into an unpredictable and playful character, Hinata Shouyou, who might help him with his bad social skills and isn't so bad to hang out with. Along the way Kageyama couldn't help but realize he had developed some kind of strange emotions towards the other without considering one of the red head's disabilities besides his height. Rescue Dog by KHShip

  • Recommended by: Blaidd Dunn
  • Pairing: Tobio Kageyama/Shouyou Hinata
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Shouyou Hinata is a single dad and survivor of an abusive marriage. Tobio Kageyama is a growly librarian recovering from depression and self-harm. Can two imperfect people learn to love themselves and maybe each other?
  • Comments: Despite looking like a deeply angsty concept, Rescue Dog tempers that with a hefty dose of sweet romance, comedy, and extremely well written smut. Having said that it is angst (extremely well written and thoughtful angst for a pair of wonderful but very flawed characters) and covers some very dark and potentially triggering topics- so if you're sensitive to topics such as domestic abuse, child abuse, child neglect, and self harm then then it might be best to give this one a miss. But if you're prepared for that then what you'll find is a complex and heartwarming story about defying trauma to learn to love again that genuinly made me tear up on more than one occasion.

The Love of Volleyball by renyanen

  • Recomended by: Ida N. Onmus
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Kagayama/Hinata with background Daichi/Suga and Kuroo/Tsukishima
  • Synopsis: Hinata and Kageyama have always shared something special, something that transcends the norms of teammate relationships. Things start to change, however, after they share an embrace in a moment of passion on the court and Kageyama can’t help but start seeing the decoy in a different light. Things slowly progress between the two amid hectic training camps, cramming for exams, tumultuous practice matches, and official games that will change the course of their lives.
  • Tags: Slice of Life, Angst, Slow Burn. Warning for sexual content (Chapter 12) and initial (and brief) unhealthy relationship dynamics
  • Comments: This is a spectacular peice of character and relationship writing- one of the best first-season Kagayama POVs I've read. It has aangst elements but the over whelming feeling I get from this fic is warmth- Kagayama is so oblivious to his own and others feelings, and that's dealt with in a way thats realistic and sympathetic to him and Hinata. And Hinata hits that brilliant balance between cute/silly and tough when he needs to be. Extremely bingable, will fill you with feelings.

trophy kisses (my greatest victory is you) by d_fenestrate

  • Pairing: Hinata/Kageyama
  • Synopsis: Hinata sighs. “When are you going to kiss me?”
Immediately, Kageyama tenses, all the prior relaxation contorting into panic and surprise.“When I come back?” Hinata continues, unassuming of the violent storm brewing racing in Kageyama’s head.Kageyama remains silent momentarily, his mind sprinting kilometers, racing at speeds capable of reaching Hinata before Kageyama himself is able to muster an answer.“When you win,” Kageyama replies practically robotically, the words themselves being repeated and practiced. “Of course, dumbass.” alt; Hinata asks when Kageyama will kiss him and Kageyama accidentally proposes another challenge to add to their everlasting love.
  • Comments: This is pure distilled Hinata/Kageyama, sweet, competitive and slightly silly.

Under the Radar by lilienpasse

  • Synopsis: Two weeks after Asahi rejoins the team, Noya finds himself starting to slip during practice. Missed receives, floor burns, the whole nine yards. But when Tanaka points out the possible cause, Noya's hard-pressed to believe him. There's no way someone as dopey yet implausibly-competent as Asahi could be the cause of his distress. After all, Noya doesn't worry that much beyond the court, and he certainly doesn't hold grudges. Right? (Semi-AU)
  • Pairing(s): Asahi/Noya
  • Comments: The first thing to say about this fic is that it's phenomenally well-written. The second thing is that it's absolutely hilarious while still hitting serious topics and maintaining a sense of realism. The third thing is that this author has an extremely good grasp of the characters and is doing amazing things with them. This fic is very, very good, in the best way.

  • Synopsis: College student and aspiring setter Shizuku has enough on her plate to deal with - distant parents, volleyball practice, school and worst of all, neighbourhood creep Kibikino. But when she meets those goddamn Karasuno boys, in particular one Tanaka Ryuunosuke, things might turn out for the better.
  • Pairing(s): F/M, Tanaka/OC, background Asahi/Noya.
  • Comments: Though OC fics are not a usual recommendation, in this case the author does a bang up job of believably inserting characters into the world. The cast's college lives are realistically imagined and the humor is outstanding. The romance is compelling as well, and develops gradually. Bonus points for cameo appearances by other fan-favourite characters.

  • Pairing: Oikawa/Hinata (central), Oikawa/Iwaizumi (secondary)
  • Synopsis: Hinata Shouyou's future seemed hazy and bleak as he approached college graduation; a seemingly endless to-do list of networking, studying, and job interviews dominated his daily life. However, when he meets Tooru, a beautiful and mysteriously wealthy model, the two begin to kindle a friendship unlike anything Hinata had ever experienced. Tooru brings Hinata into his lifestyle of lavish gifts, luxurious trips, and never-ending pleasure, provided he accepts one little detail: Tooru already has a boyfriend, and that boyfriend is the leader of one of the largest mafias in the country.
  • Comments: I was initially wary of this, but it strikes the exact right balance of allure and looming risk to be deeply intriuging and bingable. This is what I want from every billionaire romance: its sweet and sensitive, the characters are complex and believable, the stakes are consistant, and the sex scenes are sexy. Every time it updates, I read.
