    General Fics

And so the Soviets Conquered by Vengeful Soldier

  • Recommended by: Poodicus
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Summary: At the height of the Union's Power a gate mysteriously appears in Kiev, unleashing a torrent of invaders killing and maiming all in their path. Now that the Bear has awoken from its uneasy slumber, nothing will stop its fury.
  • Comments: This story takes an interesting look where the Soviet Union of a different universe in 1967 is attacked at the same time as the Japanese. As such, the Red Bear is awoken and begins its invasion of the new world, finding the precious metal Mythril which even a tiny amount can make their vehicles invisible to enemy radars. The differences in eras for their weapons though make the Japanese just as big a threat as their NATO enemies in their own world, if not an even bigger threat due to the large differences in years.

The Boys of '85 By Karaya 2

  • Recommended by Wolf_Man98, RiptideZ
  • Status: Dead; last updated August 2018
  • Summary: In late 1985 the Gate opens in Japan. Upholding the MDT the United States deploys several regiments for the United States Army and the United States Marine Corp. Among them is US Army Specialist Allen O'Hare from the Eigth Cavalry Regiment, US Army Lieutenant Donavan Sinclair from the First Special Forces Group, JSDF Lieutenant Daisuke Kita from the JGSDF First Helicopter Brigade, and US Air Force Captain John Masson from the 318th Fighter Squadron. This is a story of the United States supporting it's ally and redeeming itself after the failure known as the Vietnam War. It is also used as a medium by the author to give the reader a look into how modern Cavalry Formations act both deployed and in garrison.
  • Comments: Thought this sort of Fic is common in the Gate section the Author, Karaya 2 a United States Army Cavalryman, is making an attempt to world build and diverge from canon. The characters are enjoyable and are well written. From the way, he tells the story is unique and enjoyable. I look forward to seeing where it goes next.
    • Some minor vocal quips in this story have been pacing, as noted by several of Karaya 2's reviewers, however, given the author's intricate research, resources, and expertise in the writing of this fanfiction novel. There is little to say that is wrong with this story beyond wait and see. It's a really good read for how short it currently sits, with only three chapters at the moment(circa. November 2016), there are questionable decisions to readers that like their story to stick to vanilla canon, however, in the interest of writing a more original piece, Karaya 2 has produced an impressive story, definitely a step above the rest. Probably one of the greats in this fandom, given time.

The Fight we Chose by DFMRCV

  • Recommended by: SSgt_LuLZ
  • Status: Completed
  • Synopsis: "No one starts a war—or rather, no one in his senses ought to do so—without first being clear in his mind what he intends to achieve by that war and how he intends to conduct it."- Harold G. Moore
  • Pairing: OC & Tyuule
  • Comments: A Cold War take on the Gate formula, only it takes place at the beginning of the Vietnam War. It is not afraid to branch out to its own story early into the fic and has a focus on personal developments of underused characters such as Tyuule. The resulting Alternate History starting from President Kennedy's survival also makes for an interesting "what-if" scenario of JFK de-escalating the Vietnam War early and how his re-election campaign might have played out in our timeline.

Gate: March of the Empires by Empty Promise

  • Recommended by: Mr Terrorist
  • Status: Dead (last updated July 2017)
  • Summary: The year 1905 brings forth a new discovery, not flight, not telephones, but another world rich for the picking, and it has now picked a fight with Sleeping Giants the power of which they could never have guessed...
  • Comments: Inspired by the works of Harry Turtledove, the story tells how in 1905, six portals opened to the capitals of Japan, the US, Russia, Britain, France, and Germany, leading the Empire of Gate to invade them....and lose horribly. This leads to an alliance between the Six Nations to invade the Special Region featuring Young Future Famous People from World War 2.
    • Seconded, it starts out strong, but hell's teeth the grammar errors. Power through them and it's pretty nice, but my brain twitches. caladgo

A New Sunrise by bankai117

  • Status: Dormant
  • Summary: He was at the wrong place at the wrong time or right place at the right time, depending on who you asked. Now after his involvement during Ginza both he and his squad of Korean Marines were placed among the few that would be on the first wave through the Gate alongside the Japanese.
  • Comments: The fanfic focuses on John Lee, an American-Korean South Korean Marine whose squad was in Japan as part of a joint training exercise between South Korea and Japan when the Gate appeared. As a result, both countries decided to send their forces together to the Special Region. What's unique about this story is that despite South Korea and Japan being allies, both sides secretly are trying to undermine each others' efforts as a result of historic animosity between both countries. Thus while John and his female second in command Kim Han Yoon get along with Itami and his team, his Marines don't like their Japanese counterparts with the feeling mutual from the Japanese as well.

Gate: The Enemy of my Enemy is my what? (Fanfiction.net link here) by theirishdreamer

  • Recommended by: Mr Terrorist
  • Status: Dormant (last updated June 2017)
  • Summary: Bored, a God of Falmart decides to upset the boredom of Status Quo by opening a second Gate. After all, what could go wrong? It's opening to a place called Earth, just like the one at Alnus. It's opening to an island called Japan just like the first. Except...it's opening to a different Earth, where things went a little differently...
  • Comments: A unique fanfic where the Empire attacks an Alternative History Japan occupied by a joint British-Soviet peacekeeping force where the League of Nations never dissolved and thanks to Trotsky's leadership, the Soviet Union and Britain are longtime allies who both dislike the United States due to its racist eugenics program. While the story goes normally like any Gate fanfic like how the Joint League force enters the Gate to force the Empire to surrender to them, it's gets a unique twist when it's revealed that the JSDF from Canon also exists in Falmart, leading to a confrontation between both sides. The history of this Alternative Earth can be read here.

GATE series by carlos olivera

  • Recommended by: EDP, Supersoli
  • Status:
  • Summary:
    • GATE - WARFARE : The Ginza Gate is not the first Gate known to Earth, Italian partisans discovered one in the Italian hills during World War II shortly before it closed. After the Ginza Incident the Italian Gate has reopened without anyone else noticing… And the Italians plan to take advantage of it and their knowledge of a link between the Empire and the Roman Empire and deal with the result of a group of SS remaining on the other side back in 1944.
    • GATE - LAST ESCAPE: Sequel to GATE - WARFARE, it continues from the same point where the previous one stopped. After the fall of Calibria, the survivors of the Falcon-1 have no choice but try to escape south, toward the Empire, since all other routes heading to their HQ are now closed. To make matters worse, their escape to safety is threatened by a unit of Reichian cavalry led by General Donzark, which is more than determined to avenge his previous defeat against the Italian expedition force in the Special Region.
  • Comment:
    • Based on the script for an unproduced fan film, GATE - WARFARE is an interesting and rather unusual read, concentrating on both the lands outside the Empire and what would happen if the people of the Special Region were to deal with someone both more experienced in international missions and greedier than the Japanese. The main problem is that the author is not a native English speaker, and his writing is somewhat difficult to read.
    • Differently from the previous story, GATE - LAST ESCAPE seems more centered around the characters' psychological evolution, especially regarding the main protagonists. Flavio Lunardi, in particular, seems at the edge of a deep and serious evolution, now that the lives of his men are even more in his hands, also considering that the squad no more seems so well disposed to follow further his orders and his same role of commander is in serious discussion. A decisive improvement in the author's use of english can be noted, probably thanks to the work of a beta-reader.

GATE: And thus the Third Reich subjugated by GargleBlaster

  • Recommended by: Mr Terrorist
  • Status: Dormant
  • Summary: 1939, weeks before the planned invasion of Poland. A Gate opens within Berlin. The Third Reich is shaken by this otherworldly foe. Now the Reich has regained its bearings, now is the time for repayment. Germany will be Groß once more. Rated M for Nazis.
  • Comments: Be warned that this story is about the Nazis invading the Special Region. Yet despite this, the main character of this story is rather likable despite the fact he's a member of the SS. Also, this story shows how as a result of the Gate's appearance, Poland was never invaded, preventing World War 2, President FDR does not seek reelection, Churchill does an Enemy Mine with the British Fascists to gain some of the spoils from the Special Region with Germany and an alliance against the Soviet Union. Furthermore, mysterious magical artifacts start to appear on Earth.

  • Summary: Lance Corporal Jasper Kincaid, USMC, 24, Afghanistan veteran, Gunner aboard the M1A1 Abrams main battle tank. He has one month before his EAS, four years of faithful service about to end. Of course, nothing ever goes according to plan in the Corps, a month long training operation in Okinawa stands in the way of his freedom. Then again nothing ever goes according to plan...
  • Comments: Inspired by Manifest Destiny, this fic is also about a joint US-Japan task force exploring the Special Region, though it takes place in 2015 and instead focuses on a group of USMC tank crew since the author is a former US Marine tank crewman.

Manifest Destiny by BlueWay

  • Recommended by: Mr Terrorist, RiptideZ, Sithking Zero
  • Status: Dead; Superseded by rewrite (9 December 2019)
  • Summary: "War is the motherfucking answer." - Cpl. Josh Ray Person, Generation Kill. When two off-duty US Army Rangers help Itami during the Ginza Incident, the Rangers become part of a joint US-Japan task-force to explore the Special Region.
  • Crossover with: Spec Ops: The Line, though only mildly, as the events of that game happened in the backstory to this fic's universe, and Captain Walker, now Major Walker is a fairly important side character. However, you don't need to know the story of the game to read this, and it stands perfectly well on its own.
  • Comments: A Fix Fic that gets rid of the novel's Japanese Right Jingoism and anti-American stance of the author by showing how both the US and Japanese forces work together exploring the world beyond Gate and a discussion of a new generation of Americans trying to become Type 1 Eagleland after the War On Terror finally ended.
    • Sithking Zero: The Gate's opening is pushed back into the 2030s, after the wars in the middle east ended with the destruction of virtually the whole area. This left an enduring impact on the America here, and thus Americans are extremely cautious about the horrors of imperialism and the wars that can result, leading to canon Gate events gaining a new look from those who are watching as Japan marches down an old, bloody path... This isn't to say that the Americans are perfect, far from it. They make mistakes, they get hurt, they die. But it is a tad eye-opening to take a second look at Japan's actions in Gate from the point of view of anti-imperialism.
      • Tikigod 784: Gonna have to offer a different point of view for this story. Very little in the plot changes from the source material that much despite the author's attempts to present them differently. If anything, it could be argued that most of the changes in this story are solely for the sake of making it Darker and Edgier (the crossover with Spec Ops: The Line comes to mind). It has its' own merits, sure, and the story really shines in regard to the original characters and their backstories, but overall it doesn't change nearly as much as it should. One other thing that people should be warned about is that BlueWay ALWAYS intended to make the story extremely dark. That's not really the issue I had with the story, but it is something that could turn a lot of people off from this story.

  • Summary: Dr. Carol Dawson, a NASA Engineering and Public Relations consultant, is offered the chance to support a joint American-Japanese space program on the far side of the Gate. During her mission, Dawson must contend with superstitious natives, secretive officers, and a risky international plot with the fate of two worlds hanging in the balance.
  • Comments:
    • Binaroid: This story has been winning a following for addressing many of the concerns that Western audiences had with the original series without rehashing the original plot or gratuitously diminishing the original characters. Itami and his harem are only tertiary characters, but make their presence felt when they appear. Dr. Dawson, the protagonist of this story, offers chances to explore aspects of the setting and the plot with her passion for scientific inquiry and for sharing knowledge. The author also manages to respectfully engage with the original work's nationalism.

  • Summary: A Gate opens up in the heart of Ginza and the invasion that come leaves thousands either dead, wounded or missing. Little did the invading army realize, it would not be just one nation that would respond to their hostile actions.

  • Summary: You are Honeybee, a stalker who was simply trying to get away from an emission when you discovered a mysterious abandoned bunker. After venturing inside, you found a gateway to another world and managed to rescue a lamia named Pheela Ningyon from slavers. Now, you are trying to keep yourself and her alive from the horrors of the Zone as well whatever is on the other side of the gate. Takes place at around the beginning of Call of Pripyat and shortly before RCT3 sets out for their first recon run in Gate.
  • Comments: A quest-type fic found on Sufficient Velocity told from a 2nd person viewpoint. Unlike the JSDF, Honeybee has extremely limited firepower and has to venture back and forth between the Zone and Gate-world to resupply. Part of the story also deals with him trying to keep Pheela a secret from the other stalkers so they don't shoot her on sight as well as teaching her how to survive in the Zone. Both protagonists have Hidden Depths of their own that becomes more apparent as the story progresses. Tropers can participate in the story by voting on the threat at Sufficient Velocity.

  • Status: Dead (last updated January 2017)
  • Crossover with: Gears of War
  • Summary: Thus, The Gears Fought here. After the end of the Locust War, with the Gears rebuilding their home and the Government, a portal to a new world opens up in Jacinto. A world full of new opportunities and second chances. A place untouched by the ravages of modern warfare. A place beyond the Gate.
  • Comments: Takes place one year after the events of Gears of War 3 as Sera enters into an era of peace and most of humanity unite under the newly established United Seran Government. Ironically, on the one year anniversary of the Locust War, the Empire invaded the wrong people and they get quickly crushed without needing the help of Delta Team. The USG, facing an energy crisis with Imulsion completely gone, sends an expedition to Falmart to find new resources while establishing diplomacy with the other side of the Gate. Character personalities are spot on. The story tries to avoid The Stations of the Canon. The most notable is that Adam Fenix is NOT the main character as he has chosen to retire, therefore giving more focus on the other Gear protagonists.

Suddenly on a clear day in Tokyo Japan a mysterious portal to another world appears, disgorging an army straight from a fantasy world. After the devastation a joint Japanese,US, French and British Task Force is dispatched to bring to justice those who tried to conquer their world.
  • Comments: A very good Call of Duty and Gate fanfic which the author does some changes to make this story unique than canon. They include more Action Girls like the two female Original Characters, Carmen Ramirez, sister of James Ramirez of Modern Warfare 2 and Yuna Kotoro, Derek "Frost" Westbrook from Modern Warfare 3 new teammate after his original team died during Modern Warfare 3. Furthermore, some characters have gone through Adaptational Badass like Mari Kurokawa fights during the Battle of Alnus Hill, Prince Zorzal not being an idiot and coward but is now a smart warrior and was the one who sent the Allied Vassal Kingdoms to be slaughtered at Alnus Hill when in canon it was his father and Lelei's older sister Arpeggio becomes a Daenerys Targaryen expy who is leading an army of ex-slaves in another continent. And in one biggest changes the author has made in this fanfic was the JSDF and their allies almost losing the Battle of Alnus Hill due to mages joining the Vassal Kingdoms attack.

  • Summary: A Gate opens, and a war begins that decides the fate of two worlds. From Falmart, to the heart of the Old World, from Ulthuan to the World's Edge Mountains, to the daemon North. Armies clash, and great powers face off.
  • Comments: Originally beginning as snippets at a Space Battles thread over what would happen if the Gate opened to the Old World of Warhammer before the author made it into a proper story. The fanfic focuses on Erhardt Franz Holswig Schliestein, the fourth son of Emperor Karl Franz of the Empire of Man, where he and the Imperial forces heads to the Gate to the world of Falmart after the Saderan Empire's failure to invade the Old World. Erhardt is later selected by his father to become the General of Fort Griffon, Alnus Hill to defend the Gate, prevent another invasion from the Saderan Empire and make the surrounding the area a territory of the Empire. Later in the story, more Gates appear to the other races and Nations of Warhammer. An exciting fanfic to read. The TV Tropes page can be found here.

  • Comments: This has to be the first fic where the plot of Gate and Summoning Japan are converged into one. The fantasy elements in the story are well-thought-out and feel naturally implemented. Characters are also well-portrayed and livelier. The story captures that Fantasy Adventure feel with Military characters. Moreover, The Author expands the Coda Village section of the Original Gate Canon, turning it into its own story arc.

It's a [Star base / Dyson sphere] belonging to the Cosmic Gods on the edge of another universe. Will Falmart survive the judgment of the CELESTIALS?
  • Comments: A surprisingly good Gate fic that takes a different approach to the story by having the Celestials from Marvel take an active interest in events going on in Falmart. The story makes it clear from the beginning that there is nothing anyone in the Gate universe can do to harm the Celestials in the slightest, including the Gods themselves, but the fact that the Celestials are so far above everyone else means that they prefer to study the planet and do a whole bunch of different experiments as opposed to simply slaughter everyone in a gratuitous manner. There's a bit less politicking and fights and a lot more existential wonder/terror as the inhabitants of Falmart struggle to deal with beings who are so far beyond their comprehension.
