  • Minishadowsoul has as of date 6 fics that show great insight in the relationship between the Core Four (+ Ben), interesting backstories for the villianous parents, and an interesting look at the possible relationship between the Core Four and Ben post movie.
    • Recommended by: Brytte Myst

  • screaminginternally has 10 fics (so far) that look at certain characters (Ben and Jane, most often) and writes their thought processes and decisions in the film proper, has written friendship fics between Jane and Chad Charming (in that they were friends when they were young and grew apart in high school), and is writing a series on Jane and the magic peoples in Auradon Prep and what it's like for them. Some of it is during or before the movie, but the Jane series isn't concrete in the timeline.
    • She's got incredibly interesting fanfics exploring the perils of being an explicitly magical creature that can't use magic, not needing to sleep, eat, nor go to the bathroom, having an incredibly advanced, already adult-level intellect from the day you come into existence, and being able to perfectly, 100% accurately feel the emotions of everyone around you. Whether you want to or not. Fascinating stuff all around.

Family Means Your Problems Are Our Problems series by minishadowsoul

  • Recommended by: Brytte Myst
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: There are five installments to date with their own synopsis.
    • On the Isle everyone took care of themselves. Anything less was admitting weakness, and the children of villains were not allowed to have weaknesses. They still have problems admitting they need help, but that’s okay. They have each other, now, and one person’s problem is everyone’s problem. Or the one where Carlos gets sick and everyone takes care of him and pretends they aren’t panicking
    • Something is going on, and Ben is going to find out what. Because he is the king and these people are his friends. And he can handle this. No, really, he can and will handle this. Even if everyone smirks at him and tries to handle their problems all on their own. Or the one in which everyone helps Mal deal with a problem and Ben solves everything with an awkward, off-screen phone call
    • Evie is very good at taking care of everyone else. She likes to stay busy but often forgets she needs to do things like eat and take naps and maybe take a break before she throws her textbook out the window. Or the one where everyone reminds Evie that food and sleep are things people need to live and Ben is officially declared Family
    • They know being raised on the Isle makes them different from everyone else. Normally, these differences don't bother them. Then Jay begins to worry that some differences are irredemable but refuses to talk about it until things reach the breaking point. Or the one in which Jay panics a lot, Mal awkwardly figures out what is going on, Ben is sort of but not really kicked out of his own room, and sexuality probably should have been explained more
    • Ben is a king now. He is used to a life filled with people constantly looking out for him. One would think that would mean he'd be used to his four, newest friends taking care of him, too. They would be wrong. These four take Looking Out For One Another to an entirely new level. Or the one in which whenever Ben has a problem, he blinks and finds that problem has been solved/is being solved before he can even complain about it
  • Comments: This great series delves in Day in the Life situations between Mal, Ben, Evie, Jay and Carlos, establishing their relationships masterfully. There's the canon pairing of Ben and Mal, but it's not the focus, which lies in the relationships between the Found Family the Four are, and how Ben ends up fitting with them.

The Simple Gift of Comfort by Chereche

  • Recommended by: ladyofthelibrary
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When Evie realizes the importance of Carlos's first night's sleep at Auradon Prep, she goes out of her way to make it special and has a realization about their relationship.
  • Comments: This is a beautiful portrayal of a sibling-like relationship between Evie and Carlos, both of whom are so adorable you just want to hug them and make sure they get their happy ending.

Mysterious Fathoms Below by MissKate

  • Recommended by: AmityRavenclawElf
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: You can't cage the ocean. The aftermath of cotillion, in a world where no fascism exists without resistance, the ocean has awakened, and magic has begun to return.
  • Comments: This story epitomizes poignant characterization, and includes many characters from the Disney animated canon and the Descendants universe. Everyone interacts beautifully, and the drama (as a consequence of the events of the second Descendants film) is gripping.

New Descendants at Auradon Prep by Emersonian

  • Recommended by: Emersonian
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Six new villainous kids arrive at Auradon. While they have to deal with the prejudice that surrounds them in Auradon and their parents' harsh expectations, Lonnie has to deal with Haya Yu, Shan Yu's daughter. Charles Frollo might just find a family among his father's enemies' descendants. Back on the Isle of the Lost, commotion and teenage drama is occurring between the other villainous descendants.
  • Comments: Shows a lot on friendship, feuding, family, love, and a sense of fairness.

we are the youth of the nation that ruined us by screaminginternally

  • Recommended by: glowinggreenreptile
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After Ben's coronation, Fairy Godmother calls the children of the Isle into her office to discuss exactly how Maleficent was so prepared to get off the island.
  • Comments: A really good look at what the aftermath might have been like for the VK's actions. There's lots of yelling, and the Fairy Godmother (and Auradon in general) get called out for deciding to leave children in the hands of villainous people with no way of escape. (This author's also written for the same movie, mostly with a focus on Jane, Fairy Godmother's daughter.)

We Are Not Our Parents by Vaneria Potter

  • Recommended by: Storygirl000
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Mal knew that the 'Good Guys' weren't always as nice as they claim, and had nearly as much trouble letting go of the past as Villains. She planned accordingly, and the confrontation on Family Day ended very differently.
  • Comments: Only two chapters (and a promotion for the author's published work) so far, and it already looks spectacular. It starts with the confrontation on family day ending in the VK's favor, and diverges from there. There is some Chad and Audrey bashing, but in the author's own words, it's more "calling their movie characters out on their crap."

We'll Light the Fuse by evanescentdream93

  • Recommended by: AmityRavenclawElf
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: King Ben is a benevolent ruler and works hard to keep the promises that he makes. Even to those who put him under a love spell...“I made you a promise to give you your chance,” it said in in the margins next to the elegantly scripted offered new title, “Royal Councilor to the King, Ms. Uma of the Isle, Captain of the Lost Revenge”. “You gotta be messing with me,” was the first thing out of Uma’s mouth.
  • Comments: Engaging plot and touching interactions between characters. A beautiful story with tons of thought put into it.

Descendants: Twisted Tale by King of Autumn Leaves

  • Recommended by: Arabian-Knight
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: A rewrite and novelization of the original movie, but with a twist. The four kids brought over from the Isle are Uma, Harry, and two OCs, Dante (son of Hades) and Quinn (daughter of the Queen of Hearts).
  • Comments: Engaging plot and fun twists on the world. Still in the early stages of the story, but worth checking out!

No Promises by SilverQuill

  • Recommended by: Storygirl 000
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Magic may be a thing of the past in Auradon, but Via doesn't work with magic. It's been three years since Uma's attack, and Auradon has changed. A lot. Auradon Prep is now an even mix of VKs and AKs with a goal of bringing over every kid from the Isle. Most of these VKs want to go good like Mal and her friends. Except for one brilliant young schemer by the name of Via. Daughter of Varian the Alchemist, Via's used to getting overlooked as the daughter of a minor villain. Ignored, underestimated and sick of it all, Via and her dad have hatched a plan to bring Auradon down from the inside- by releasing the villains imprisoned on the Isle of the Lost. All Via has to do is play the good girl for a while, and the rest is history. At first glance, Via thinks she's got the easy part. But being good is a lot harder when evil is all she ever wanted.
  • Comments: The OC is a wonderful Villain Protagonist, her father wasn't flanderized like many of the adult villains were in the movies, and the writing is spectacular. I highly recommend giving this fic a chance.

We Gotta Be Free by siriuslyrose

  • Recommended by: OceansPhantom
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The Isle of the Lost is opened and that is supposed to mean that things get better. It’s supposed to mean that every VK gets to have a second chance at a brighter future. It’s supposed to mean that those kids get to feel safer now that they don’t always have to look over their shoulders anymore. That was what was supposed to happen- so why didn't it?
  • Comments: Deals with the immediate consequences of bringing down a magical barrier that kept history's worst villains from hurting anyone on the other side of it, and addresses the fact that many of said villains are Abusive Parents and many children who either were kicked out or ran away are now displaced with nowhere to go. The author focuses on the friendships more than shipping here, so those who want a break from the Shipping Wars should find it refreshing.

Elicia's Ice by KOTLCfannumber1

  • Recommended by SpringStarFangirl
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Ellie is the daughter of Elsa, the Snow Queen, and has inherited her mom's powers. She's not quite the perfect AK everyone expects her to be, with faltering control over her magic and a lonely school life. When the VKs enter Auradon, she jumps ship to their side when Chad insinuates that she should have been a VK herself, but Ellie is heroic at her core. How she expresses it, though, is not typical.
  • Comments: Deals with a lot of bullying and manipulation. Not for everyone.

The Heart of Auradon: A Descendants One-Shot by NYC Hell Butterfly

  • Recommended by ANTMuddle
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Carlos De Vil has died in his sleep. His original allies all react differently to the matter, one to the brink of creating an Auradon-wide incident.
  • Comments: Deals with the death of a major character; honors the memory of Cameron Boyce.

What If the Fates Were Reversed? by GoldenRose29

  • Recommended by: Storygirl 000
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Princess Mal, daughter of Queen Maleficent and King Hades, soon to be crowned queen of the Unforgiving States of Auradon, has made her first decree. Four children from the Isle of the Forgotten will be brought to Auradon Prep and be given a chance to prove their wickedness. But the heroes on the Isle have a plot to escape! Which side will these four choose?
  • Comments: A Role Swap AU where the villains took over Auradon years before the events of the series. While the overall plot is the same as the original movie, it manages to give a fresh take on them, between the imprisoned heroes proving to be not so different from their foes to the differing reactions to certain events (e.g. Parents Day pretty much goes the same way, but the Isle kids earn begrudging respect instead of scorn). Definitely worth a read.

The Forgotten Children by Minishadowsoul (Soulmates AU)

  • Recommended by: Brytte Myst
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: In a world where most people get a soulmate, happy endings are expected. Anything or anyone that reminds people that happy endings are not guaranteed are erased from history. Or banished to an island completely devoid of magic and not even their children are allowed to leave. This won't stop the Isle Four and their plan to forever destroy soulmate magic. If it means destroying their links with their own soulmates, they're perfectly willing to make that sacrifice.

Love Isn't Weak by Carathay

  • Recommended by: Brytte Myst
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Ben and Mal are having a lovely little chat up in his room and eventually talk about about her mother's belief that love is weak. Then, in a fit of silliness, Mal decides to kiss Ben on the nose. This starts a fire that she didn't expect and they examine whether love and vulnerability are really as weak as Maleficent thinks. The level of sexiness increases as you go farther in with Chapter 3 starting to include sex.

You Could Be King (But Watch the Queen Conquer) by The Harley Queen

  • Recommended by: Brytte Myst
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Their love was powerful and eternal and Mal was addicted to power like strawberries. It would've been so easy to kill him, but maybe it was better she didn't. Now his minions were hers. Character death. Slight AU of my story Once Upon A Time (i.e. Mal doesn't kill Ben) can be read alone.

I bet we both taste like glitter by arbitrage (AU)

  • Recommended by: ruff1298
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A somewhat Modern!AU in which Evie drags Mal into helping her with a beauty competition for their school’s cosmetology department. And of course, who can resist that lovely face?
  • Pairings: Evie/Mal, Jay/Carlos

Package Deal by Master_Magician

  • Recommended by: Marcus S Lazarus
  • Status: Complete (possibility of future updates)
  • Synopsis: After his coronation, Ben finally manages to get his schedule together enough to be able to spend a day with his girlfriend Mal, only he didn't see coming the proposal she would offer him.
  • Pairings: Ben/Mal/Evie
  • Comments: A fascinating collection of one-shots looking at how things unfold when Mal reveals that she and Evie were involved back on the Isle of the Lost and asks Ben to let Evie be a part of their relationship. The fic not only avoids most of the clichés of a fanfic threesome by drawing out way such a relationship might develop, but clearly puts thought into events that would allow Ben and Evie to develop their own relationship (as opposed to both of them dating Mal and 'tolerating' the other).

Gang United by spyriteVestar

  • Recommended by: Gintama200
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Ben never gets around to creating his decree, but that's okay. Because the Isle Gangs have figured out how to escape the barrier, and they're leaving. For good. Features a village with no adult supervision, loads of characters, and a ton of worldbuilding.
  • Pairing(s): Ben/Mal, Doug/Evie Gil/Harry, Jay/Carlos, and Freddie/CJ Hook
  • Comments: The story structure may seem weird at first but the read is well worth it. It contains lots of fleshed out OC's, characters taken out of the books, and the characters from Wicked the movie failed to include.

     Crossover

Cursed-Borns of the Long Isle and Beyond by AmityRavenclawElf

  • Status: Dormant; last updated January 2020
  • Crossover with: Percy Jackson and the Olympians
  • Synopsis: Not everyone who is half-Greek-god and half-mortal makes it into Camp Half-Blood; those whose mortal parent has wronged the gods in some unforgivable way are cursed never to see the camp's protection. Most of the cursed children die young, what with the monster attacks, but some defy the odds. Uma, daughter of Poseidon, and Harry, son of Nemesis, have managed to survive for years outside of camp. Gil, son of Artemis (not that anyone can believe him about that), never even knew there was a camp, let alone whether he'd be allowed inside it. As they grow together, they come to realize how unfair their lot is, as Cursed-Borns. Maybe they should do something about that...
  • Comments: A strong, intriguing start.

Ladies of the Court by Josain Chennuth

  • Status: Dormant; last updated July 2018
  • Crossover with: Heathers (movie), Heathers (musical)
  • Synopsis: All Uma wanted was to survive her senior year of high school. She finds the most popular clique in school inviting her into their ranks, and who is she to say no? However, her Solid Teflon Senior Year takes a dark turn, and it all started with cornnuts. Heathers AU, JD!Harry x Veronica!Uma, rated M for language and themes of suicide and other dark themes.
  • Comments: A good mix of elements from both Heathers and Descendants.

Maleficent and Descendants: A mother's love by star eyes pendulum dragon

  • Status: Ongoing
  • Crossover with: Maleficent
  • Synopsis: The legend of sleeping beauty is legendary. In two worlds, the same legend exists, but were different. In one of them, Maleficent was the Mistress of Evil that cursed a baby. In the other world, Maleficent was the child's fairy godmother and saved her from the curse she placed upon her. The two worlds shall connect and Maleficent will meet her daughter of another world, Mal.
  • Comments: A simple but well-written concept as Fae-Maleficent travels to Auradon and meets the villain kids. It's still early, but Mal and Maleficent's meeting alone makes this fic worth reading; once they have established that Maleficent comes from another reality rather than being Auradon's Maleficent, the moment Mal reveals who she is to Maleficent, 'mother' and 'daughter' embrace as family despite having only just met.
