These are recommendations made by Tropers for Code Geass general fanfic, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own finding to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes on the discussion page.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

32 Pickup by Gunpowder Gelatine

  • Recommended by: Marlee Cross
  • Status: Dead (last updated September 2015)
  • Synopsis: Basically, Lelouch and Cornelia team-up following Marianne's death to find her killer. It's really too early in the story to know exactly where it's going but by the looks of things, Lelouch and Nunnally won't get banished here.

Armed Resistance by SixTwoSixFour

  • Recommended by Lustheron, Unclouded TJ, Kazeto
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: AU. Lelouch, the long-lost prince, has been plotting his revenge on Britannia for years. But he's slowly realizing that his excuse for fighting has become more than just an excuse. Between his old anger and new purpose, which will he follow?

Changing Course by karndragon

  • Recommended by: azul120
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: AU from R2 Episode 19 What if someone had picked up Lelouch after the betrayal of the Black Knights and changed the course of his destiny with the help from those he would have never expected.
  • Notes: Is being rewritten here.
  • Comments: In-progress, but it looks to be pretty much the perfect Fix Fic for anyone who was irritated by the betrayal, and the subsequent events, including the Zero Requiem. Lelouch is saved by someone who informs him that Nunnally is still alive, a game changer in two very crucial regards: Lelouch begins to come back from the brink of despair with her at his side again, and is able to keep her from being used as a pawn by Schneizel. One very satisfying Crowning Moment of Awesome: when Villetta attempts to strike up a conversation with Kallen after the betrayal, the latter her gives a very satisfying Shut UP, Hannibal, just knowing that she didn't really care about the truth. And more importantly, Lelouch finally gets to come clean with Nunnally and Kallen, and the core Black Knights are called out on the Moral Dissonance regarding the betrayal. Some people may not be satisfied by some of the contempt Suzaku is treated with and how he has become a bit of a third wheel, or the apparent Flanderization of Tohdoh and Chiba. Not to mention that the prominent OC, Jinta Kuromaki, has already been tagged a Fixer Sue on a few occasions. Still, not enough to detract from the insightful points made here.

Code Geass: Age of the Chaotic Truth by CrazyNinjaPenguin

  • Recommended by: Rabukurafuto, Entan
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Post R2. Twenty years after the end, Cornelia's daughter, Princess Ava li Britannia, is disgusted with the now-stagnant Britannia. After getting a geass from "D.D." she goes to destroy Zero's lies with the most effective weapon of all: the truth.

Code Geass: Alden Of The Uprising by VeniVediViceroy

  • Recommended by: fearjunkie
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A retelling of Code Geass in which the power of Geass was given not to Lelouch vi Britannia, but an average Britannian named Alden Pelham. Seeing first hand the discrimination and mistreatment of the Elevens, Alden begins fighting to bring freedom and equality while also struggling with his own mortality.

Code Geass: Awesome of the Rebellion by Suirahpla

  • Recommended by: RipAndTear666
  • Status: Dead (last updated 7/23/2015)
  • Synopsis: AU where Lelouch has a half-brother named Awesome, who is almost exactly like him only better in every way. Loosely follows the same storyline as the original series.

Code Geass – A Brave New World by nightbringer24

  • Recommended by: mrthischarmingman2
  • Status: Dormant; last updated January 2019
  • Synopsis: What happens when a young man from our world is transported into the world of Code Geass? Watch as our unfortunate hero is thrust into situations he doesn't fully understand, but tries to make the most of it.

Code Geass: Colorless Memories by NSBleach00

  • Recommend by: Romance China 999
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Rai, a boy who has no memories of himself gets found by Milly Ashford. From there, she and her friends try to help him while at the same time Rai gets caught up in a major uprising occurring in Area 11 and he must decide which side he is on. A redux of the original fic with some new content, tightening up of grammar and spelling. Eventually diverting completely from not just Canon, but also the original fic's plot.
  • Comments: Code-Geass-Colorless-Memories A diamond in the rough, while it takes a little while for it to truly get going. Once it Growing the Beard it never stops in its tracks, With a Myth Arc subtly built up in the background that has much promise and potential. Colorless Memories also has its own fanon Wikia pages here, with much content there that adds more details and Worldbuilding to the fic. Also, has a Sidefic called Code-Geass-Colored-Memories that will also expand the fic's universe.

Code Geass: Cornelia of the Defection by draconichero21

  • Recommended by Lustheron
  • Status: Dead (last updated 11/12/2015)
  • Synopsis: A "what if" type of tale as in "What if Lelouch had been captured at Saitama? Would he really have been in as much danger and trouble as he believed? Or would his greatest enemy instead becoming his greatest ally?"
  • Comments: Brought to you by the man who wrote Soul Chess and Fairy Without Wings, this is a For Want of a Nail story that leads to Cornelia siding with Lelouch and preparing to go to war with Britannia.

Code Geass: A Different Code by Thanathos

  • Recommended by: Marlee Cross
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Instead of finding C.C. in the capsule at Shinjuku, Lelouch found and received his Geass from V.V.
  • Comments: This is not the end to the deviations from canon either, which include Lelouch sparing a much more likeable Clovis, Kallen discovering Zero's true identity much earlier as well as receiving a geass of her own, Mao tentatively joining Lelouch and Shirley's father surviving Narita. Honestly, nothing major has come of any of these things yet, however, they are worth mentioning due to the fact that these things (the last two especially) rarely happen in Code Geass fanfics.

Code Geass: Dirge of Daedalus by Kodai Okuda

  • Recommended by: Little Serge, azul120
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Taking place 5 years after the end of R2, it basically takes not three but four ideas and runs with them: (1) What would the state of the world (politically and socially) be like in the near-future after Zero Requiem is completed? (2) What would happen if Schneizel broke free of the geass placed upon him by Lelouch? (3) What if the ancient Greek Gods and Heroes of myth were in fact Code Bearers and Geass users? and (4): What if Lelouch really did die, but then found a way to come Back from the Dead? The following story is a war of epic proportions, one that not only engulfs the Code Geass world, but implies the involvement of many others as well...
  • Notes: Has two sequels, Code Geass: Chronicles of Tartarus (Complete) and Code Geass: Alpha Omega (Dead).

Codes And Geass: Embracing Your Inner Megalomania by Trickster Priest

  • Recommended by: Shadow Wolf75
  • Status: In Progress
  • Synopsis: A Self Insert fic, the writer finds himself thrown into the role of Lelouch, bringing knowledge of much of canon with him. This addition balances out some of Lelouch's worse tendencies, resulting in some spectacular derails of events. Though even with this advantage, Murphy is ALWAYS watching.

Code Geass Funnies by Cal reflector

  • Recommended by: Lee
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A collection of oneshots by the genius that gave us Code Geass: Lelouch of Britannia. Though not 'finished' it's never guaranteed to get updated, so for now it settles into four stories: Schneizel uses the doujinshi market to destroy the rebellion, the Black Knights discuss the finer points of Knightmare based fanservice in the wake of Kallen's capture, Schneizel and Clovis try to make Lelouch a ladies man and Schneizel (once again) defeats the Rebellion by way of... Pizza? Oh so much Hilarity Ensues.

Code Geass: The Iron Prince by gameboy5432

  • Recommended by: Duras1989
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Your basic alternate reality fanfic in which Lelouch remains a prince, he hides his face behind the Zero mask, which earns him the nickname "Iron Prince", also he sometimes calls himself Zero.
  • Comments: A good fanfiction, with an interesting situation presented, an overall good fic, with interesting twists, [[spoiler: Clovis once he sees what a Magnificent Bastard Lelouch is and just how much difference there is between the two of them decides to kill himself rather than face the emperor's wrath when it comes to weaklings, Kallen is recruited by the JLF, she hates Zero but is seemingly falling for Lelouch, Chiba and Todoh get tangled in a complicated situation, Suzaku, Jereian, Villeta and Kewell are Lelouch's subordinates, etc.

Code Geass: Lelouch of Britannia by Cal reflector

  • Recommended by: Lee, Guessmyname, Rogue 7, Raxis, xm0123, Kchasm, owlbot, L3wt, Unclouded TJ, GrieverVIII, Kodai Okuda, enviroguy
  • Status: Dead (last updated 6/21/2014)
  • Synopsis: This is the first of several Code Geass fics where Lelouch and Nunners remain royals, and the best of the bunch. Suffice to say that the author has some obvious knowledge of a certain German commander.
  • Comments: The best Code Geass fic period. All others burst into flame in sight of its glory.
    • Rogue 7: Fantastic. The author takes a far more in-depth look at Britannia than the one provided by the show and does an amazing job of fusing together British and American traditions and references. It introduces and makes sympathetic all of my favorite Britannians, and in general is simply a great read, even if you aren't a Code Geass fan. The only flaw I can see is that the author picked Army to win the Army-Navy game. With a friend at Annapolis, I pull for the midshipmen.
    • Raxis: Amazing story. Any story that can believably make Kewell likeable and deep is really something.
    • Kchasm: Brilliantly written. It has the feeling of Alternate History, especially with the excerpts from Fictional Documents at the beginning of every chapter. Note also the various interesting parallels—for example, it's the Lelouch-led Brittanian army that gets called "the Black Knights".
      • This author's Lloyd is as hilarious as it is accurate. Good to see that the story is finally in Area 11.
    • Owlbot: While the author certainly takes his time in a rather lengthy prelude to what's essentially the meat of the story - the drama in Area Eleven - by no means is the long prelude tedious. Although the story lacks the theatrics of canon, by no means does it lack drama; the revised relationships amongst characters, especially among the Imperial siblings, often border on Crowning Moments of Heartwarming and surmises what could have been.
      • Chapters 1-19 are more of an "R0" season than a simple prelude.
    • Xencipher: Quite possibly THE BEST fanfic this troper had EVER read. The For Want of a Nail summary was very tempting, and it delivers exactly what it promised. The character development is arguably better than the anime in some places, and it's fun to see just how different some of these characters are than in the anime canon.
      • Many of the characters who were vehemently racist in the anime are especially different in this fic. This is completely justified since Lelouch and Nunally were never used as political hostages and left for dead in Japan, which was the primary motive for said racism (especially with Jeremiah, who founded the purebloods because of it).
    • Unclouded TJ: Quite impressed with the background and effort put into this fic. Lesser authors could have made the For Want of a Nail story and skipped to Area 11 but this fic goes above and beyond laying the groundwork for reasonable character changes without explaining things backwards. Very recommended especially if you enjoy alternate histories.
    • Definitely the best Code Geass fanfiction I've read to date. I'm pleasantly envious of your obvious talent. Good job and Kudos to you Cal Reflector for putting the effort into this work, you deserve the compliment for a job well done—Kodai Okuda.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R-eset by Demons Anarchy of Pride

Living Contradictory By Erickmenk

  • Recommended by: Puidwen
  • Status: Dead. Last updated July 2011.
  • Synopsis: During the SAZ rally, Zero asked to have a private talk with Euphie, but thanks to the idiocy of two spies, their said talk was broadcast live to the entire world
  • Comments: Very silly and humorous.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Redemption by Cortega

  • Recommended by: Chetren, Ragnar The Semi Green
  • Status: Dead (last updated 7/28/2012)
  • Synopsis: Here's the basic rundown: Lelouch gains Charles' Code and reawakens in an abandoned warehouse after being whisked away from the place where he got stabbed by Jeremiah. There he meets a weird and Straight Gay extradimensional being/God with whom he makes a contract with. Two years later, the world Lelouch built is slowly crumbling and he must "once again wear a mask to bring peace to the world."
  • Comments: While the fic certainly has some memorable moments like Lelouch taking up farmwork to become an ass-kicking machine, one can't help but notice that the author sometimes inserts story elements that just simply didn't exist before, like Milly and Cornelia getting engaged and married to (respectively) Rivalz and Guilford (who was apparently the Straight Gay God's frat brother. Other than that, it's a fine fic, and this troper encourages giving it a whirl (you'll get the pun if you read it).

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Second Chance by kyugan

Code Geass: Light in the Darkness by Sdebeli

Code Geass Megiddo by Wing Zero Alpha

  • Recommended by: swtrooper42, Ragnar The Semi Green, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: In a For Want of a Nail story, Lelouch sticks around long enough at the finale of season one to make ensure the Black Knights victory before going after Nunnally. This has unfortunate implications as Schneizel orders the activation of Operation Nero, the detonation of all Sakuradite deposits due to the Black Knights' impending victory. Japan is virtually destroyed as a result and Lelouch is captured and has his memories altered by the Emperor. Eight years later, Lelouch is a brilliant general leading Britannia to victory against its enemies. But over the years, the remnants of the Black Knights have built up their strength in preparation for war with Brittania. All they need is a leader, and they know just where to find one.

Code Geass R2: From Within by theAsh0

  • Recommended by: fsdfsdfsd
  • Status: Dead (last updated 1/6/2013)
  • Synopsis: Instead of using him as bait for C.C, Charles decided to put Lelouch's drive to find his mother's killer to good use, and convinced him to help take down V.V. As a result, Lelouch is instead geassed into believing that he and his brother Rolo are agents of V.V's- who Lelouch has a long-standing grudge against. The story quickly goes back to Japan, in a real attempt of V.V's to draw out C.C after identifying her as part of the still-struggling Black Knights.
  • Comments: Unique in that the story's focus keeps changing, from Lelouch's life as a Geass Agent, to his attempts at escaping with Rolo, to being reluctantly forced into the role of Zero without regaining his memories. The latest chapters have ultimately changed the Status Quo permanently by killing off the entire royal family apart from Lelouch, Schneizel, Cornelia, Nunnally, Charles and V.V. The story starts dark, and gets progressively darker as the plot thickens.

Er, whatever the heck they're called again.

A Cold Calculus by Z98

  • Recommended by: TB3, Unclouded TJ, Gadeel, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The White Queen, the Iron Heart of Britannia, Euphemia the Just, many are the titles and appellations for Euphemia I, 99th Empress of the Holy Britannian Empire. Her ascension is remarkable not only for the means by which Euphemia obtained the throne but also for those that rose with her or were felled in the process, a process with its share of near-failures and deaths.
  • Comments: A fascinating look at an alternate history where Lelouche and Nunnally both apparently died in the circumstances surrounding the loss of Marianne. The resulting trauma considerably shifts young Princess Euphie's approach to the world, with the result that her reign as Viceroy of Area 11 unfolds in a drastically different manner. Further changes reveal themselves when, in Lelouche's absence, Kallen becomes the one to contract with CC, setting two powerful young women on a collision course over the fate of Britannia and Japan. Despite Euphie's rise to the Imperial throne being a foregone conclusion laid out in the summary, the journey to that outcome is more than rewarding. Z98's use of language and grammar is excellent and he demonstrates a singular mastery of politics, intrigue, and logic, both in exploring the possibilities of the Code Geass universe and in highlighting or reworking some of its inconsistencies. Everyone gets some development, from the Britannian court right down to the Ashford family and the countless bit players caught up in the various schemes and conspiracies. The story is also being updated at a prolific rate, with twelve chapters and almost 100,000 words published in the first two months alone.

This troper finds the fact that Lelouch's first official act is to chew out the guard who doesn't trust Suzaku before knighting his friend especially heartwarming.

Of Monsters And Men by Nate Grey

  • Recommended by: Anonymous
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A For Want of a Nail fic, with the initial change being Nunnally being one of the hostages at Lake Kawaguchi (along with Euphemia, Nina, etc).
  • Comments: As a whole, this is a well-written, believable fic. The majority of the characters are in character, with some exceptions being Shirley (who the author turns into even more of The Scrappy, likely to annoy a number of people). There are several OCs, mainly Geass users, and there are a couple of divergences from canon not caused by the initial change (such as Nina having a Geass). Kallen, Euphemia, and Nunnally all get a significant amount more attention than in canon, all being characterized accurately and getting a number of awesome moments. Nunnally is quite a lot less naive in this than she seems in canon but otherwise is the same. The scenes with Euphie and Lelouch a/o Nunnally are nice also. In addition, there are quite a lot of hilarious moments, IMO.

  • Synopsis: Post R2. A Nunnally introspective. In which Suzaku realizes what it means that Nunnally and Lelouch were siblings. Because just like Lelouch was no true demon, Nunnally is far from being an angel. And they all wear masks.
  • Comments: Yeah, if you ever wanted to see a Nunnally that isn't cute and adorable on the inside, this fic is very good for you. Or perhaps you want to freak Suzaku out.

  • Synopsis: "If this is Schneizel, Odysseus, or Cornelia, then I congratulate you on somehow overthrowing me. If this is Lelouch... well, I advise you to at least read the rest of this forward before burning it. You might learn from the mistakes of an old man." An account on the life of Charles Zi Britannia, as written by the 98th Emperor himself, addressed to his successor.
  • Comments: One of the few fics that deal with Charles directly, it's both hilarious and in character for him. Certainly worth a look.

  • Synopsis: Changed forever after his mother's death, one youth starts his path into darkness to eradicate the evil within his homeland, starting with Area 11, the land where he used to feel most at home, but has become a dark prison. Donning a faceless mask, he sets out to rebel against what his homeland stood for, by starting from zero.
  • Comments: It starts slow, but is slowly building up. Also, it fleshes out characters that weren't given that much screentime, making them more real. Corrects some of the things I felt illogical with the original anime series, making things happen more realistically.

Refused the right to rest in peace, Lelouch is forced into a new existence, and back into a familiar war. Parallel Universe. Gender Switch.
  • Comments: Among the best Peggy Sue fics I've seen out there. Well written enough that it boldly goes off the rails at the first opportunity and develops things very well from there, showing how much easier and more difficult the journey could be even with future knowledge.
  • Trope page here.
  • Has a sequel - Into Darkest Night (Ongoing)

They hate each other, but in a world that so eagerly accepts Lelouch's sacrifice without thanking him for it, they cannot help but take refuge in one another. Leave Me Your Starlight by Shamera

  • Recommended by: Love Psychothefirst
  • Status: Ongoing.
  • Synopsis: Five years after Zero Requiem, everything should be perfect for Nunnally. As the beloved Empress of a peaceful world now dedicated to the pursuits of medical advances rather than war, respected and popular, how could she ask for more? But after finding C.C. once more, she can't help but ask the witch for one more thing: Geass, the power of kings.

No one will talk to her about her late brother, and five years without an outlet did not diminish her grief. If the only way to understand his actions was through a self-destructive path, then that would be the path Nunnally chose.

  • Comments: A Peggy Sue fic with a twist; half character study on Nunnally, half Set Right What Once Went Wrong Time Travel, and written in amazing prose, Leave Me Your Starlight chronicles Nunnally's attempts to change things so that her brother will live. It takes time for the time travel plot to really kick in, but once it does Nunnally immediately starts smashing up the canon plot and changing how things will progress. This also features Adaptational Badass Nunnally and the consequences of her actions as much as how it causes positive change. As it's still ongoing there is only the assurance that Earn Your Happy Ending is in effect, with Shamera weaving together a plot that focuses on the sibling love between Lelouch and Nunnally, as well as what each is willing to do for the sake of the other.

World Enough And Time by Shamera

  • Synopsis: Six months after Ragnarok, all Kallen wants to do is protect the people she loves, even if it means betraying everything in her heart to serve a Britannian prince. Suzaku wants to reverse a mistake he made but would never take back. Euphemia is willing to risk everything for herself in order to be a better person and find a cure. And Lelouch... Lelouch wants to make the world safe for his little sister, even if it means destroying everything in his path. (aka the Lost Song inspired zombie apocalypse AU I always wanted to write for Code Geass. This is going to be a ride.)
  • Comments: Drawing inspiration from Lost Song, with touches from Noragami and Aldnoah.Zero while tossing in a very unique take on a Zombie Apocalypse, this is a downright intriguing AU. Written with each part focused on the POV of a character, it tells the story in Anachronic Order, especially C.C.'s chapter, answering some questions while bringing in new ones at the same time. The plot is a jigsaw puzzle that slowly is revealed and each new instalment brings more excitement and world-building.
