Fanfic Recs / BIONICLE

Go To

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth getting cast into eternal sleep for.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for BIONICLE fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page. No-name recommendations will be zapped. Nobody would back up the rec. Discussion of the recommendation is welcome on the discussion page. As such discussion is important, do remember to add the discussion page to the watchlist, if need be.

Do warn when a fanfic may head into non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

Authors and Websites

The BZPower Library Archive

  • Recommended by Digi Flame
  • The BZPower Library is home to the Fan Fics of many brilliant (and not so brilliant) authors. However, anyone with an account can post one so quality is always suspect, but there are some real gems. The site also has a rather expansive RPG community if one considers that their cup of tea.
    • Became part of the Archive, so stories here aren't updated anymore, unless they got carried over to the new BZPower Library.

The BZPower Library

  • Recommended by Crimson Flight
  • Due to the move to a new forum software, BZPower ended up with a new Library, where one can find fanfics of varying quality. The Library is also split into three categories: Epics for long sagas or multi-chaptered serious fiction, Short Stories for short stories, and Comedies for the more humourous stories.

Custom Bionicle Wiki

  • Recommended by Prehistoric Echoes
  • It is a site that has quite the user base and many well written fanfics. Of course, Sturgeon's Law applies. Stories range from short poems and novellas to books, novels, and even multi-novel epics.

Biological Chronicle by the Cross-Wired Geeks

  • Recommended by nightelf37
  • Ever wanted to read the entire BIONICLE story in one place? Biological Chronicle is the entire thing – books, serials, podcasts, etc., all comics that contain story not covered elsewhere, and links to video content – all combined into a flowing narrative, with typos fixed, formatting made consistent, and minor continuity errors edited out. This compilation is divided into 10 "Books", or volumes, each containing roughly one year’s story.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Bionicle Re-Birth Chronicles by Tohkann Toa of Arts (AU, Animated)

  • Recommended by MiffTheFox
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Alternate Universe Fic, Web Animation - A retelling of the Bionicle storyline involving humans who can fuse with their Toa partners.
  • Comments: Better than it sounds... Atleast that's what the creator is saying.
    • It is. The voice editing could use a little work, but the story and animation are both very smooth. The theme song, however, is Made Of Awesome.

Quest for the Energy Stones by Chronicler of the Great Valley

  • Recommended by Enterprise and nightelf37

  • Comments: Also found here.

Quest for the Mask of Life by Chronicler of the Great Valley

  • Recommended by nightelf37
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Sequel to Quest for the Energy Stones. When Littlefoot and his friends end up in the Matoran universe, they find themselves caught in the middle as old and new friends must fight many new threats to save their universe.

The Newest MoL Spoof by SPIRIT

  • Recommended by DoomTay
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Takes Mask of Light combined with Animated Actors, and the filming process Gone Horribly Wrong.
  • Comments: The author didn't realize the movie had two directors before publishing this chapter. He still stuck with what he came out with.
    • Seconded by Tyrannotitan. Hilarious parody with lots of great moments. The author has also done spoofs for the second, third and fourth movies which are just as good, if not better.

The Tournament of Shadows: Absolute Chronicle by Kumata Nuva

  • Recommended by Sayacha
  • Status: Vanished from the internet. Please post a link if found.
  • Synopsis: Set before the Brotherhood of Makuta's betrayal, the fic tells the story of a member of the Order of Mata Nui, named Syneon. Syneon is tasked with checking out a strange event that occurs once a year, called the "Tournament of Shadows", which, as the name suggests, is a large tournament for the scum of the earth to pit themselves against each other in, all for a mysterious, fabulous prize at the end. Much better than it sounds, and actually is not the average, run-of-the-mill tournament story. Updated every Sunday.
  • Comments: Very well-written, and using a cast made up pretty much entirely of fan-characters, many of which are on loan from other people. Syneon is a very likable protagonist and realistically struggles to fit in with the unsavory characters he's forced to put up with for the time being. It stretches into filler on a few occasions, but mainly for the purpose of mapping out the island and setting the stage for later events instead of just jumping straight into the action. It also manages to have a female character in a mostly male setting who for once is not just the Token Girl. Overall, a very enjoyable read and one that has obviously had quite a lot of thought and work put into it.

A New Ally by Goldenrod

  • Recommended by Alienhunter, Sayacha
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Through a freak occurrence, a young human girl is transported to the Bionicle world. There, she makes new friends, has many adventures, and discovers amazing powers.
  • Comments: Very well-written, it is a great opening for the rest of the author's stories. Kit is a very likeable protagonist, and the fic has many great characters.
    • It's worth noting that unlike the vast majority of humans-trapped-in-the-Bionicle-world stories, Kit manages to avoid being a Mary Sue while still being capable and strong in an unfamiliar setting. The fic itself is also thoughtfully detailed, and the author neatly ties her OC in with the canon storyline in all of her stories.

Ignition by Legolover-361

  • Recommended by Crimson Flight
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A dark one-shot that follows Nuparu and his musings as he creates the Vahki as a replacement for the Kralhi, which turned against its masters.
  • Comments: I came upon it by accident, and I loved it. It may have been a bit long, but it was rather refreshing to see a story about BIONICLE that concentrated less on heroism and justice and more on the darker aspects of the series. Nuparu may seem slightly out of character, but this is pre-amnesia Nuparu and we only see the lighter side of his inventing, never the darker part.

Xaterex Multiverse Storyline by Varkanax 39

  • Recommended by Prehistoric Echoes
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A series of books spanning about seven full-length novels, the story chronicles the adventures of a Toa named Shardak and a rebellion against a dark force known as the Ix Empire. Widely considered well written by CBW users.
  • Comments: I first read bits and pieces of the series' second or third book The Shadows Coil, and became an active follower of the storyline afterwards. Some of the earlier works take their inspiration from the Hunger Games, but later novels take on an entire new life. The final novel, Eternal Darkness was recently finished and is currently the longest page on its respective site.

The Destiny of Bionicle by bonesiii

  • Recommended by
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: A re-telling of the Bionicle storyline, told from the perspective of a matoran who came into existence before matoran were even originally built, who traverses the universe and witnesses many of its major events and at times even becomes an important component of them.
  • Comments: I came across this epic on BZPower, and although it took time to really get interesting, it managed to instantly hook me with its initial mystery of the matoran's origin. From there, it just keeps getting better, and it is updated monthly, as well as highly fun to read. Through the protagonist, bonesiii brings a new perspective of the Bionicle storyline in to play, and ties it together in a way that I'm not sure has really been done before with a single unifying character. I definitely recommend it for reading.

Fractures Universe Storyline by BobTheDoctor27.

  • Recommended by Time Lord Victorious
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: An AU fic where Makuta Teridax never existed, which is visited by a few (non-canon) characters from the Core Universe. Many things are different in this universe as a result of Teridax's absence.
  • Comments: It's been several years since I have been a hardcore Bionicle fan, but this gritty and cynical storyline is some of the best fan fic I've ever read, with some of it being better. It has well-developed characters, interesting ideas and concepts, gritty undertones, the stories are some of the longest pages on the site, and it's just overall great storytelling. Some of the stories and articles are unfinished or undergoing a rewrite, so keep that in mind if something seems out of place.

Bionicle Ignition: Island of Doom by BionicleNP / Noah Productions

  • Recommended by Golden Keyblade
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A full-length film that tells the 2006 Bionicle story in the form of stop motion. Picking up right where Bionicle: Mask of Light left off, we find the forces of good and evil seeking out the most powerful mask in existence, the Kanohi Ignika. Featuring the Piraka, the Toa Nuva, the Toa Inika, and locations such as Voya Nui, Karzahni, and Metru Nui.
  • Comments: One of the longest Bionicle fan films, clocking in at nearly two hours in length, the story manages to faithfully adapt the entirety of the Voya Nui arc into the Bionicle 4 we never got. While a few parts of the voice work could be improved, the animation is pretty good for stop-motion and the overall project feels solid.

The Toa- A Bionicle Retelling by NickOnPlanetRipple

  • Recommended by Goldenguy880
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A Web Comic that condenses several key elements of Bionicle's story into one simple, cohesive narrative. Starts with an apparent adaptation of the 2001 Mata Nui arc, but diverges dramatically from canon about halfway through. Made by the creator of Planet Ripple and LEGO Rewind.
  • Comments: You don't have to be a Bionicle fan or expert to read this. Like the best of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, this comic pulls elements from across the original's sprawling history and continuity, and turns them into a great story that anyone can enjoy - in the creator's words, "Streamlining it without cheapening it." Contains many differences from the G1 canon, but they only make the story more interesting and unique, and create some truly surprising plot twists. The creator also includes some interesting commentary about what Bionicle has meant to him, and his love for it really shines through. Highly recommended.

Bionicle, Nova Orbis by NickOnPlanetRipple

  • Recommended by Goldenguy880
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A Web Comic sequel to the G1 storyline, set thousands of years after the events of the original story.
  • Comments: A reboot of the creator's unfinished original versionnote  of this concept. This troper has not read the original, but so far the new version looks to be a fascinating exploration of how much the world and people of Spherus Magna have changed over the millennia. And if the creator's other Bionicle web comic The Toa is anything to go by, this series will be an excellent story.

Twilight Break by Avita

  • Recommended by Warmaster23rat
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: A fic set after Teridax's death, focusing on two of the Makuta's former Matoran servants, Ahkmou and Gavla, as they try to navigate their new lives on Spherus Magna-only to find that even in death, Teridax's shadow is not so easily escaped from...
  • Comments : An excellent read that explores Ahkmou's and Gavla's characters, not to mention providing a plausible continutation to the storyline.
Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Frustration by C-Unknown

  • Recommended by Sayacha
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The Toa are victorious, and the building of a new life on Spherus Magna has begun. Tahu stands as a leader for his people, but as strife brews within their fragile society, Gali fears he may not be able to handle these challenges alone. Tahu/Gali.
  • Comments: A piece that looks at one possible side to relations between the inhabitants of Aqua and Bara Magna once the great migration has taken place and Teridax is dead. It starts out bleak, but true to character, Gali manages to lift things up in the end and create a nice Hope Spot that you honestly believe in. Tahu is a little out of character, but there is a very good reason for this in the story, so it's no issue at all. Most definitely worth reading.
