The Works of Federica Giulietti

  • Recommended by Roo
  • Federica Giulietti's fanfics are a rare experience, rather than the traditional prose stories, they take the form of illustrated scriptfics or, if you will, "fan storyboards," with a loose, sketchy drawing style, which makes her stories very visually-orientated and cartoony. The stories are pretty close in tone and feel to the original cartoon, if a little edgier and unhindered by censors, and usually center around the Warners (though the other Animaniacs characters make frequent appearances as well.)
    • Highlights include Warners Against Warners, which pits the Warners against their original prototypes, FUTURWAANA, which is a very loose parody of Futurama (particularly the first episode), and Wakko's Dish, a parody of Wakko's Wish with slight horror overtones.
      • Important note: The fics are originally in Italian, but have been translated into English by Federica Giulietti herself — and that's their biggest weakness, because her English isn't very good. The creativity and energy of the stories more than make up for the less-than-stellar translations, though.

YakkingYakko

  • Recommended by FurorNocturna
  • Written in playwright format, this author manages to capture the tone and essence of the original cartoon in their works to the point they can easily come across as unaired episodes.
    • "Won't-stock" is arguably the funniest of the bunch, with the Warners attending Woodstock and their "unseen" ventures at the concert that runs loosely parallel to the events in the canon episode "Woodstock Slappy", and it's a laugh riot start to finish; "Scary Movie Blues" features the consequences of when Wakko and Dot bite off more than they can chew watching a scary movie late at night and are stricken with paranoia come bedtime, to Yakko's chagrin, which is both highly entertaining as it is heartwarming with the sibling interaction; "Sherlock Yakko 1-4" stories are a bit darker and edgier in tone, but still keep the spirit of the show with its charm and humor all the while being an affectionate parody
    • Warning: Minor Wakkox Fifi Le Fume shipping in some of the stories, and minor implied shipping between Dotx Buster in one

     General Fics
Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Family by The Middle Warner Sibling (Caution is advised, primarily due to language issues and likely an Alternate Universe setting.)

  • Recommended by Market 43 Fan, kurumitsubasa
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: A depiction of the Warner siblings managing to rise from almost the ultimate hard-luck circumstances (their dad is a pickpocket/con artist, for example) to become the stars of Animaniacs. Set between 1988 with the most recent chapter being from the summer of 1996.
    • There is a side story here (Complete).
    • Now has its own page.
Out of the Tower and Out of Their Minds by Karen Tindall
  • Recommended by Trouble The Cat
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Technically two stories in one. The first part is very loosely based on the old SNES Animaniacs game, with the Warner Siblings being asked by Mr. Plots to look for a stolen movie script in what is really a ploy to keep them out of the way of an important celebrity dinner at the studio, only for the script to be stolen for real by Pinky and the Brain, in one of their usual harebrained Take Over the World schemes. Lots of characters make cameos, including members of the Tiny Toon Adventures cast and genuine Hilarity Ensues. Part 2 is a full on crossover with Tiny Toon Adventures in which the Warner Siblings are rewarded for their help in the first part of the story with a visit to Acme Acres.
  • Pairing(s): Contains some Yakko/Fifi in Part 2.

Bonds by FearlessFreep

  • Recommended by: Gemini Star 01
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "An unexpected death leads to whispers of an unsettling conspiracy. When disaster strikes, the bonds of sibling love are tested in a race against time to save Toontown." Set several years after the end of the series, Bonds mixes liberally with Looney Tunes, Tiny Toons, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
  • Tags: Character Death, some pairings, Dark Fic (but not too dark.)
  • Pairings: There's no real romance, but there are highly emotional pairings built up, including Buster/Babs, Yakko/Babs, and Skippy/Dot.

Jane Narf by Parhelion

  • Recommended by bluehedgehogjunkie
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Passion! Plagiarism! Puerility! The Love Story Every Woman Would Die a Thousand Deaths to Live is now The Parody Every Mouse Would Die a Thousand Deaths to Delete!"
  • Tags: Crossover, Parody, Original Flavor
  • Pairings: Implied Pinky/Brain, Dot/Brain and Snowball/Brain—but it's only incidental. (Think Yakko as Han and Dot as Leia in "Star Warners".)

Sixty Years in a Water Tower by Meltha

  • Recommended by: LancelotG
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A decade-by-decade look at how the Warners passed the time while they were locked up in the water tower.

Who's the cutest dot? by frecleface

  • Recommended by fruitstripegum
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Dot has always been considered 'the cute one' and has grown attached to that nickname. But when a survey says that Wakko is far by the cutest in the group, she begins to work on her looks... in an extreme way!
  • Warning: The main plot of this fic is dealing with eating disorders which the summary doesn't hint to very well. Also contains very brief mentions of the sexual abuse of a minor and children being drugged. It's not taken very seriously or dwelled on but the warning should be there regardless. If any of that puts you off I don't recommend this one.

Running Around in Circles by Dark Hououmon

  • Recommended by ladyofthelibrary
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Yakko had never thought twice about pulling pranks on people he deemed his "Special Friend". What happens when he picks the wrong target and finds himself now the victim? Rated T to be safe. (taken from fanfiction)
  • Comments: While this story gets dark at times, it ultimately remains a piece about the family bond between the members of the Animaniacs cast and how good always wins.
  • Warnings: Rape, torture, abuse of various characters and death of minor characters.

Colorless by weirdsib

  • Recommended by totofan4ever
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: There's nothing to fear but fear itself. For toons, this is literal, and the Warners are about to find that out the hard way.
  • Comments: While the pacing of the game is a bit quick for my liking, the bond between the Warner sibs is this fanfic's strongest point and makes the fic overall enjoyable.

Dear Wakko by Racerette

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: 20 years after the show ended, Yakko writes a letter to his brother.
  • Comments: A nice little one-shot that builds up to the perfect joke in the end. Just go read it.

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Yakko Warner tells us how insanely hard it was to rehearse, learn and record the 2minute long 'Nations of the world' sketch.

But when a bully steals Wakko's hat, the Warners have to find a way to get it back while still being on their best behavior. • Comments: This could easily be an episode of the show!

Morning Warners by sweetiepie08

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Dr. Scratchansniff wakes up one peaceful morning only to find the Warners tearing his kitchen apart!
  • Comments: Again, this could easily be an episode of the show and it shows a nice father like relationship on Dr. Scratchansniff's part.

  • Recommended by fruitstripegum
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A story of how Dr. Scratchansniff discovers not even happy-go-lucky Wakko can handle being locked in an elevator for over ten hours without serious repercussions.

Bedtime in Burbank by charcolor

  • Recommended by VanillaOwnsChocolate
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: When the Warners are asleep in the water tower, away from cameras and scripts and directors, there's no need to put on a show and make an audience laugh. They can let themselves be a little vulnerable sometimes.
  • Comments: A series of loosely connected hurt/comfort stories about the Warners. The author captures the siblings' personalities perfectly and blends your typical hurt/comfort angst with a dash of the show's humor. A refreshingly in-character look at how the Warners care for each other outside of Animaniacs.

Solve Mysteries With Hercule Yakko! by The Illustrious Crackpot

  • Recommended by Dina M Nealey
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: A collection of pointlessly bizarre oneshots of mysteries you can quote-unquote Solve Along With Hercule Yakko.
  • Comments: Yakko does his Hercule Yakko thing, solving a string of surreal, ridiculous mysteries, ranging from solving a murder case to finding out why there aren't any more eggs left in the fridge. Don't go into this expecting genuine mysteries — usually they're just extended jokes and the solutions are the punchlines — but there's a cheeky wit to the writing, lots of metahumor and appearances from many classic Animaniacs and Looney Tunes characters. And Daffy Duck.

Crossroads of Destruction by DiamondDollDark

  • Recommended by dudeu
  • Status: Completed
  • Crossover with Disney and their characters and properties, including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goof Troop.
  • Synopsis: A one-shot story. Yakko finds his treasured boat missing, having been inadvertently robbed by Goofy. As such, he and his siblings wreck havoc on the Walt Disney company to find it, all while Goofy and his son Max are unaware of the destruction and the former's responsible for all that chaos.
  • Comments: This is the closest thing we have to a crossover between Animaniacs and Disney made by a fan, for fans. Despite the plot being based off an Ed, Edd n Eddy episode, it still carries the same tone of laughs, thrills and chills as the show, especially with one joke going over our heads.

Pinky Promise by congressmanmabel

  • Recommended by fruitstripegum
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When Pinky sees the Warner siblings trying to stay warm in the frigid cold, his heart is overwhelmed with compassion. He suggests to Brain that they should help the poor orphans, to which the smaller mouse reluctantly agrees. But when the mice receive a stroke of bad luck, their friendship is put to the test.

Adventures in Warner-Sitting by LooneyTuneLady

  • Recommended by: TrueBlue170
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: In the fall of 1999, teenage Nori Bennett is hired to watch the Warners while a millennium celebration is planned. While she gets on well with Wakko and Dot, she is exasperated by the antics of Yakko, who has a not-so-secret crush on her. A bet is struck between them, but all bets are off when they're drawn into Y2K trouble. Original series continuity.
  • Pairings: Yakko/OC, background Scratchansniff/Hello Nurse
  • Comments: The characterization of the existing characters is spot-on, as well as having fleshed-out and likeable original characters, and the dialog feels as natural as watching an episode of the show. Very funny, plenty of movie/90s trivia from an author who has clearly done their homework, with a very interesting fan-interpretation of how the Warners were locked in the tower. While there IS a romantic plot (which is better than it sounds), this isn't the main focus of the story and focuses more on the themes of found family and the impending Y2K crisis.

Flower Gleam and Glow series by midas_touch_of_angst

  • Recommended by: Furor Nocturna
  • Status: First two stories Flower Gleam and Glow and What Once Was Mine are complete, but there may be more stories to come
  • Synopsis: A combined Warnerized retelling of Tangled, Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, and both Frozen movies.
  • Pairings: Pinky/Brain is the only major romantic focus if any, while the lion’s share of relationship prominence is in the author’s own words “99% found family hurt/comfort”.
  • Comments: It is absolutely astonishing how well put together this is. It’s no easy feat to combine so many plot lines together, yet this author pulls it off with such finesse it boggles the mind. It’s even more impressive to so effectively weave the humorous spirit of Animaniacs so organically with the more dramatic moments of the stories being retold. Can’t say too much else without spoiling everything, but I cannot recommend this one enough.

Once Upon a December by Sokka’s_First_Fangirl

  • Recommended by Furor Nocturna

  • Synopsis: Five years ago, the kingdom of Warnerstock fell to King Salazar. King William and Queen Angelina were killed in the chaos; the youngest Warners were whisked away to safety. And the crown prince, Yakko Warner, vanished without a trace. Now, The Brain has come up with his best scheme yet: for he and Pinky to train an actor to be Yakko, and collect the reward money. Armed with the prince's music box, the plan should go off without a hitch. But fate delivers them a toon that is too much like the missing prince for comfort. And when the rumours of Yakko's survival reach Salazar's ears, his plans to destroy the Warner siblings for good are pushed forward. It seems reaching Burbank will not be as straightforward as they'd thought. Anastasia AU
