Fanfic / YU-GI-OH GX: Sleeping Beauty

Go To

LetItFlow0992's second 'blender' fanfiction (putting the characters from one source material into the situations of another). As you can probably guess from the title, it is a combination of the characters from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX with the plot of the classic fairy tale 'Sleeping Beauty'. Actually as it turns out, it's the plot of the Disney movie, although there are some alterations.

Long ago, a prince and princess of two kingdoms fell in love and were engaged to marry. The duel spirit Yubel, in love with the prince, was overcome with jealousy and built up an army of monsters to wage war on the kingdoms and take the prince for herself. After Yubel nears victory, the two royal families urge the prince and princess to flee to safety. The couple spend the rest of the years on the run, eventually dying of old age together. An enraged Yubel discovers this after the many years of pursuit and performs a Reincarnation Ritual for them to be reborn sometime in the far future.

Fast forward through the millennia and the story then centres on the main characters from the first Yu-Gi-Oh series settling down to normal lives, until the prince and princess are each reborn as a child to one of the couples. Elsewhere, Yubel is summoned from the Duelling Dimensions to Earth, and with the rebirth of the prince and princess at last having occurred, she is now able to take her vengeance and obtain what she desires...

Tropes

  • Adaptation Expansion: The extended prologue, and later, the final fight
  • Batman Gambit: Chazz pulls one of these to keep Jaden and Alexis apart so Yubel can have an opening to carry out her plan
  • Beta Couple: Noah Kaiba and Christine Wheeler
  • Big Bad: Driven mad when Prince Judai, her lifelong friend and unrequited love, fell in love with Princess Alexandra, Yubel embarked upon a wrathful quest of domination to kill Alexandra and force Judai to love her instead that led her to pursue the two throughout their lives, only to fail when they pass on. In the modern day, when Judai and Alexandra are reincarnated as Jaden Moto and Alexis Kaiba, Yubel returns to the human world to continue her pursuit, still seeking the same goals.
  • Big "NO!": Yubel, on the second time Jaden offers her a last-second chance.
  • Blatant Lies: Yubel once tells Jaden that she would never kill Alexis as that would completely turn him against her. Killing Alexandra/Alexis was part of her original plans in the first place.
    • In that same conversation, she also gives him the impression that the sleeping spell can never be broken.
  • Brick Joke: It is said in the chapter A Song for Two that Attcius' manager does not approve of or like romantic music. Said manager later turns out to be Keith Howard, the former Bandit Keith.
  • Bus Crash: Rebecca's grandfather, Arthur Hawkins, died of natural causes before the time the main story is set.
  • The Cameo:
    • Professors Viper and Stein appear at the birthday party on Academy Island, easily giving off the vibe that they don't want to be there.
    • Atticus' manager, only briefly mentioned, invites himself to the celebration at the end of the story to put an end to Atticus' dream of writing romantic music.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Jaden gets two Equip Spell cards for his sixteenth birthday. Those cards turn out to play an important role in his duel with Yubel.
  • Distant Prologue: The first chapter summarises what took place thousands of years before the main story.
  • The Dragon: Adopted and lovingly raised by Yubel as her son since infancy, Chazz Princeton faithfully follows his mother in her mad desire to attain the love of Judai/Jaden and take revenge on Alexis/Alexandra, working as her right hand and the commander of her army.
  • Equivalent Exchange: If Alexis does not prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel by the sunset of her sixteenth birthday or, after the casting of the counter curse, if the spell is broken, then the spell that was originally designed to kill her will take Yubel's life instead.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The first thing Yubel does when she is brought to our dimension is betray and kill the ones who summoned her.
  • Evil All Along: Early on in the story, it is revealed Chazz was placed at Duel Academy to be Yubel's spy in case Jaden Moto or Alexis Kaiba ever attended the school.
  • Evil Former Friend:
    • Thousands of years ago, Yubel betrayed Prince Judai, the person she had sworn her life to protect and been his friend since childhood, by attacking his kingdom with an army of Duel Spirits and murdering his parents.
    • Upon confirming Jaden and Alexis are the reincarnated forms of Judai and Alexandra, Chazz abandons his friendship with the two and sells them out to his mother.
  • False Friend: After he secretly betrays Jaden and Alexis, Chazz uses their recognition of him as a friend to separate them so Yubel can have a clear field in attacking Alexis and later capturing Jaden.
  • Heroic BSoD: Every time it is uncovered that Yubel and Chazz have gotten one step ahead of them, the three spirits seem ready to fall into this. Mana and Fonda eventually do; Dorothy does not.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • In the prologue, Judai and Alexandra's families and their people all give up their lives to protect their prince and princess.
    • A non-lethal example. Mokuba and Rebecca are forced to give up the right to raise their daughter in order to keep her safe.
  • Hope Spot: Yubel and Chazz have a conversation, where it is implied the latter may want to get Alexis out of her enchanted slumber. He only wants to do it to torture her more.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: After succeeding in trapping Alexis in eternal slumber, Yubel and Chazz abduct Jaden to Yubel's citadel, imprisoning him there until Jaden chooses of his own free will to love Yubel instead of Alexis.
  • If I Can't Have You…:
    • If Chazz can't have Alexis, then he will go along with his mother's plan to trap her in eternal slumber.
    • Chazz once asks Yubel what she would do if she cannot obtain Jaden's affections. At the time, she cannot answer truthfully. In the final battle, she decides that if she can't have Jaden, then Alexis won't either.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Subverted in the climax when Jaden proves to Yubel that Judai genuinely fell in love with Alexandra. After spending millennia believing otherwise, Yubel is finally convinced of the truth. The problem is, knowing the truth doesn't matter to her. She still would have done every atrocity she committed through the centuries the same way, all to have Judai/Jaden.
  • Killed Off for Real: Slade and Jagger Princeton are murdered by Yubel upon her return to the human world when she refuses to accept their bargain.
  • Last-Second Chance: Jaden gives Yubel two of these. She turns him down both times. He doesn't offer her a third.
  • Little "No": Chazz does this when he thinks Jaden has escaped from his cell. He lets out a big one when he confirms it.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Not getting chosen by Judai in the past and constantly being rejected by his reincarnation in the present drove Yubel to murderous insanity.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Certainly with Yubel and Chazz's cases
  • Mama Bear: After a one-off incident where Yubel managed to infiltrate the safety of the compound during the second Time Skip, Teà absolutely refuses to let Jaden out of her sight, fearful that the spirit will again try to abduct her son. Due to this, she was uncomfortable with letting him go to Duel Academy on his own.
  • Missing Child: While they know she's relatively safe in the care of the three Duel Spirits, Mokuba and Rebecca are forced to spend sixteen years away from their daughter in the hope that Yubel never finds her.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: One of Yubel's two primary goals was to kill Alexandra/Alexis. Thanks to a counter curse from Dark Magician Girl, she is forced to reconsider that part of her plan.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Yubel succeeds in placing Alexis under the sleeping curse and later taking Jaden captive. The last thing she needs for complete triumph is for Jaden to choose her over Alexis.
  • Noodle Incident: When Dorothy decides that the dress she's making for Alexis should be pink, Mana reminds her of how well Alexis reacted to her dorm walls once being painted the same colour. Dorothy immediately backtracks.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Leon von Schroeder, when he discovers something of his has been stolen.
  • Papa Wolf: More of an Uncle Wolf. Seto's particularly strong instinct to protect his family has continued to grow. He vehemently refuses to let the three spirits take Alexis into hiding.
  • Ship Tease:
    • It is implied that Jesse might have buried feelings for Blair.
    • Atticus and Mindy, near the end of the story.
  • Shout-Out:
    • It's Yu-Gi-Oh GX meets Sleeping Beauty. It's filled with Shout Outs.
    • The closing lines of the fic are a notable homage to The Neverending Story.
  • Single-Target Sexuality:
    • Yubel, for Judai/Jaden
    • Chazz, for Alexis
  • Skyward Scream: Chazz "MOTHER!!!"
  • Spiritual Successor: Aside from being GX reversions of two well known classic movies, Wrath of Viper and GX: Sleeping Beauty rarely have anything to do with each other.
  • Taking You with Me: Yubel attempts this as her final move in her duel with Jaden.
  • Time Skip: There are two
    • The first is the countless thousands of years between the prologue and the first chapter
    • The other one, of course, is the traditional sixteen year jump
  • Undying Loyalty: An ongoing theme of the fanfic.
    • Dorothy, Mana and Fonda will not stop until Yubel is defeated and Jaden and Alexis can live peacefully together.
    • Jaden will do anything to free Alexis from her sleeping curse.
    • Then there's the villainous example in Chazz; he will carry out his mother's will, no matter the cost
    • At the end of the day, the theme was and is tragically averted by Yubel.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Yubel was definitely heading towards this.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Jaden tries this with Chazz. It doesn't work
  • Wham Line: In The Sword Shall Fly, Yubel reveals to Jaden that she can still fight him after being wounded, just not in her current form.
"There were rumours during her years of conquest and chasing after Judai and Alexandra," Dorothy finally responded. "But we hoped that they weren't true."
    "What!" Jesse growled in impatience.
    "That Yubel could... transform."
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: All Chazz ever wanted was for someone to show he was the greatest love in their life. A pity he was blind to Jasmine's affections.
  • Yandere: In order to have Judai/Jaden as hers, there is no length Yubel won't go to. Betray and conquer the kingdom she swore her life and service to? Done. Threaten to murder the innocent Princess Alexandra? She'll deny the innocent part and destroy the Princess' kingdom out of spite. Hunt down and pursue the object of her desire and his wife to the end of their days. Well worth the reward to her. Cast a reincarnation spell on them after they successfully outwit her? She will wait millennia to have her revenge. Return to the human world and savour said revenge by planning and waiting sixteen years for it to come to fruition? Chickenfeed compared to the previous wait. Place Alexandra's reincarnation, Alexis Kaiba, in an eternal slumber? Perfect. Capture Judai's reincarnation, Jaden Moto, and hold him prisoner until he chooses to love her instead? Almost there. Jaden escaping her? She'll fight tooth and nail to re-secure him; she's spent too much and too long to act otherwise. Faced with the epiphany Judai's love for Alexandra, and Jaden's for Alexis, was always genuine? She'll accept but it doesn't change the outcome. Why? Because if she can't have Judai/Jaden, then nobody will.
