Yokai Watch Re
by Feenie13 is a Yo-kai Watch fanfic that adapts the series' story with Katie as the protagonist. It's inspired by the game's plot but isn't a 1-to-1 adaptation.
Katie Forester is an ordinary girl until one day, while out bug-catching with her friends, she finds a mysterious capsule machine near a shrine. When she buys a capsule, a yokai named Whisper appears. He gives her a special Yokai Watch that allows her to interact with yokai. That is the start of Katie's adventure.
Yokai Watch Re! provides examples of:
- Alternate Universe Fic: There are some differences from game canon, such as Katie telling her friends about yokai after meeting Whisper.
- Apologizes Alot: Upon waking Whisper, Katie is more apologetic than frightened.
- Body Horror: There's some body horror when a yokai makes artificial yokai out of living humans.
- Dark Fic: Downplayed. It's nothing too dark but it's more serious and similar in tone to Shadowside than the original anime.
- Death by Adaptation:
- Lord Enma has been dead for 11 years and has been replaced with McKraken.
- Both of Katie's grandparents are dead. In the games, only your grandfather is deceased.
- Happily Adopted: Nate knows he's adopted and is perfectly content with his adopted family.
- Kid Hero: Eleven year old Katie is likely the only one who can stop McKraken. Being a hero turns out to more dangerous than she had thought.
- Last-Name Basis: Whisper refers to Katie as "Ms. Forester".
- Odd Name Out: Nate is named after a human and has an odd name compared to his sisters Salacia, Soleil, and the others.
- Oh, My Gods!: "What in the Inferno's name (....)" gets used by Maddiman.
- Ordinary High-School Student: Katie is an ordinary 11-year old elementary schooler until she meets Whisper and is granted a Yokai Watch.
- Patchwork Fic: Yokai Watch Re is game-based with some anime elements sprinkled about, as well as the usage of the Fictional Currency from Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble.
- Related in the Adaptation: Nate is Lord Enma's son.
- Secret-Keeper: Eddie, Bear, and Nate are three of the only humans besides Katie who know about yokai. However, Katie's mother also knows about yokai thanks to her father Kenny.
- Shout-Out:
- Whisper unintentionally quotes Genie from Aladdin upon waking up. In the same chapter, Katie references this with "I'm surprised you didn't start singing about how I've never have a friend like you, to be honest.", but Whisper doesn't understand the reference.
- Eddie and Nate get into an argument over Super Bash Sisters Rumble (Super Smash Bros. Brawl) in chapter 3.
