Wonders of the Sea
is an AU story by Mr. Hardcor3 based on The Owl House where Luz's family works at an aquarium, and ends up rescuing two injured mermaids named Amity and Boscha.
The story now has a sequel titled Wonders of the Sea II: Legacy of the Deep, which continues from the first story.
This fanfic provides examples of:
- Adaptational Species Change: Amity, her family, and Boscha are mermaids, and Vee, Skara, Eda and Raine are human.
- By the end of the fic, Skara is revived as a mermaid by Odalia while Luz is turned into one by Amity in order to save her life.
- Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In the show, Luz has no proper interactions with Skara. Here, they were High-School Sweethearts until Skara had died years ago.
- An Aesop: You never forget the people you fall in love with, but moving on when you lose them doesn't mean you ever will.
- Back from the Dead: Odalia brings Skara back to life so she kills Luz.
- Big Bad: Odalia acts as such for the first story while the rest of the Blight family act as such for the sequel.
- Bittersweet Ending: Odalia dies for trying to kill Luz, but Skara (now a mermaid thanks to Odalia) tells Luz to move on from her and to accept her love for Amity and Boscha because she can't return to the surface world. Luz does take Skara's advice before her ex swims off to rediscover herself.
- But Now I Must Go: At the end of the story, Skara swims away into the ocean to do some soul-searching because there's no proper way to explain how she's somehow alive.
- The Ghost: Eda and Raine are mentioned by Luz when she visits Skara's grave, but don't appear.
- God Save Us from the Queen!: Odalia is the ruler of the merfolk here, and Amity and Boscha are both terrified of her.
- It's All My Fault: Luz blames herself for Skara dying despite it being out of her control; Skara used her last breath to give Luz a Last Kiss before passing away. Luz's guilt is so large, she's been unable to love anything that reminds her of Skara, even being unable to see Eda and Raine without thinking about it.
- The Lost Lenore: Skara died from cancer two years prior, and her death affected Luz, who hasn't been able to move on.
- Missing Mom: Hunter's mom Alexandra is said to have died some years back. It's later revealed that Odalia captured and froze her in a block of ice.
- Noodle Incident: Luz was once hit by a car and needed to use a walker for a while.
- Our Mermaids Are Different: They come in different varieties of aquatic animals, and can grow legs when out of water. Boscha also has her canonical third eye.
- Polyamory: As with many other Hardcor3 stories, this one acts as a Amity/Luz/Boscha series.
- Related in the Adaptation: Philip is Luz's father in this story and Vee is her twin sister, while Caleb is her uncle and Hunter her cousin.
- Chapter 13 reveals that Skara was Eda and Raine's daughter.
- Time Skip: A month passes between the first story and the sequel.
