WonderShock is a Bioshock/American McGee's Alice/Rise of the Guardians Fusion Fic written by MartyrFan and is an Alternate Universe Fic set after the events of Alice: Madness Returns, but before the events of the first Bioshock game.

The story is set in the late 1950s before the events that would lead to the fall of Rapture and follows Alice after her murder of Dr. Bumby. Despite now being free from him, she's still plagued by her fractured state of mind, and making matters worse (or better), aspects from Wonderland are bleeding into reality thanks to her previous exposure to ADAM. She'll have to become stronger to prepare for what she could end up facing. After all, New Year's won't wait for long... Has been discontinued, after having last been updated in 2019.

WonderShock provides examples of:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Defied. After learning that she's immune to the negative effects of ADAM, Alice does everything she can to avoid letting her newfound power go to her head.
  • Adaptational Badass: Alice gains Plasmid abilities throughout the course of the story and the ability to bring pieces of Wonderland into the real world thanks to being injected with ADAM back when she was at Rutledge, all of this making her one of the most dangerous people in Rapture. In the games, while she was a tough fighter, that was only while she was in Wonderland, where as in the real world, she could easily get knocked out by any grown human.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: Dr. Bumby is responsible for supplying Tenenbaum with the children needed to create the Little Sisters as well as Suchong with the materials needed to create the ADAM vaccine. This makes him indirectly the reason why Jack never suffered any ill effects from Plasmid use, as Alice's blood (which he supplied to Tenenbaum) was used to make the ADAM sickness vaccine Plasmid.
  • Alternate Universe Fic: On the American McGee's Alice side, the story is set in a world where the Liddells were given the opportunity to move to Rapture by Andrew Ryan after an incident. In addition, the time frame is moved up from the 1870s to the late 1950s.
  • Asshole Victim: Bumby is pushed into the water and starts to drown, then is immediately crushed to death by the Atlantic Express. Alice was thoroughly unrepentant, and it's easy to see why given what he did to the orphans he brought in. He also loses any sympathy from his acquaintances when they learn of what he was really like.
  • Ax-Crazy: While Alice is already fairly unhinged (albeit restrained) on her best days, she really becomes this when she enters Hysteria Mode. The brief moments spent in her POV in this state show just how insane she becomes.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: On Alice's 20th birthday in Chapter 13, Sander Cohen leaves both her and all the attending guests of his play trapped in Fort Frolic, causing ensuing riots and killings while Alice is caught in the middle. She even mentally notes that of course something like this would happen on her birthday.
"Of course madness would break out on her birthday."
  • Broken Pedestal: Alice finds concrete evidence on Bumby's crimes and outs it to others, destroying their perception of him and ruining his reputation post-mortem.
  • Civil War: After the events of the New Year's riots, all of Rapture gets locked into one.
  • Composite Character: The playable Jack from BioShock is combined with Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians.
  • Crapsack World: It's Rapture, so it's not exactly pleasant even before the 1958 New Year's Eve riots. Poverty, prostitution, and Plasmid addicts are extremely prevalent, and life is harsh for all but the elite and upper-class. Then the New Year's riots happen in Chapter 8 and things go to Hell in a handbasket.
  • Dirty Old Man: Dr. Bumby is much older than Alice and, including what he did to Lizzy in canon, it's implied that he was planning on using a Plasmid that grants X-Ray Vision and invisibility to spy on her for perverted reasons.
  • Everyone Has Standards: The Cheshire Cat is repulsed that Bumby was planning on spying on Alice with the "Peeping Tom" Plasmid for his sick perverse pleasure, even noting that he didn't think he could hate the man more than he already did.
  • Fusion Fic: On two levels.
    • As the name implies, Alice and her world are merged with the world of Rapture for the story and takes place in the same point and time as the BioShock games, with Rapture itself taking place of London.
    • Additionally, characters from Rise of the Guardians make an appearance, most notably Jack Frost, who is combined with BioShock's Jack, with them being combined into the setting as well.
  • An Ice Person: Jack almost exclusively uses the Winter Blast plasmid since he's a Composite Character of BioShock's player character, Jack, and Jack Frost.
  • The Immune:
    • Thanks to Alice's A-Gene, she's naturally immune to the negative effects of Plasmids and can take in as much as she likes without risk of becoming a Splicer like almost anyone else in Rapture.
    • Because of Alice's...uh, state of mind, so to speak, she's completely immune to Sheti's telepathic abilities and has to consciously let him enter if he wants to read her mind.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite the BioShock setting, everything that took place in American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns happened exactly the same way as they did in their games, with the only things changing being that the real-world settings were in Rapture rather than England, and what happened in those segments went exactly as they did in the game. Though this makes sense due to the games taking place in Alice's mind, so not much in Rapture would have any affect on them.
  • Invisibility: Besides X-Ray Vision, Alice's first Plasmid allows her to turn invisible depending on how much ADAM she has. Much like the x-ray abilities, Alice is unnerved at the possibility that Bumby planned to use these powers for perverse reasons like to spy on her.
  • Karmic Death: Bumby is crushed by the Atlantic Express train when he tried to have the Infernal Train bring ruin to Wonderland. In essence, he's brought to ruin by a train much like he tried to do the same to Alice's mind. Alice even states that when it comes to killing her enemies, she prefers karma to sadism.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty:
    • After years of psychological abuse and manipulation, Alice brutally murders Bumby and gets word out about his true nature after finding evidence, ruining his reputation even after his death.
    • Nurse Witless is cut off from Alice after years of extorting her for money to buy ADAM and is unable to do anything about it.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: One of Alice's primary goals is to become stronger in the real world to ensure that she'll never be a victim of the likes of Bumby ever again.
  • One Hero, Hold the Weaksauce: Alice possesses what's called an ADAM-Gene, or A-Gene. This allows her to utilize Plasmids as much as she desires without worry of negative side effects that would lead to becoming a Splicer.
  • Prequel: In terms of chronology, the story preludes the first BioShock and takes place both before and during the downfall of Rapture.
  • Sanity Has Advantages: Inverted. Thanks to Alice's unstable mind, she's immune to mind reading and has to willingly allow someone to enter her headspace for them to read her thoughts.
  • Super Drowning Skills: A non-video game example. Bumby never learned how to swim, so the minute he's pushed into the water, all he can do is hopelessly flounder before the Atlantic Express crushes him to death.
  • Superpower Lottery: Alice's ADAM-Gene more or less grants her the winning ticket when it comes to Plasmid powers, as it lets her avert the Blessed with Suck downsides of injecting oneself with Plasmids, letting her gain as many powers as she wants without risk of becoming a splicer. And given how many Plasmids there are, well...
  • X-Ray Vision: The first Plasmid Alice gains is one that provides her with x-ray vision. She got it from Bumby's safe, which really unnerves her since he was probably planning to use it to spy on her.
