Witches and Nobility is a The Owl House fanfic written by Lilith Blackwood.

Danica is a mysterious young witch who's affiliated with the infamous Edalyn Clawthorne, AKA Eda the Owl Lady. Blessed with incredible magic and a sharp mind, she is a force to be reckoned with.

When a young human girl named Luz Noceda accidentally wanders into the Boiling Isles and joins them to learn how to become a witch herself, Danica soon finds herself swept up in a tidal wave of dark secrets, hidden tales, and a twisted history that could change everything.

What are her reasons for affiliating with a fugitive like Eda? What is her connection to the Emperor's Coven? And what exactly are the full details of her past?

This is a retelling of The Owl House, but with significant changes to the plot due to the addition of various OCs, especially the main protagonist, Danica.

Tropes present in this fanfic:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Hunter makes his debut earlier in “Honorable Duel” as the Golden Guard than his canon appearance, where he is revealed to have been secretly following Danica throughout the Covention until she calls him out, revealing that she has been aware of his presence the whole time.
    • Darius makes a cameo near the ending of "Harrowing Escape", foreshadowing that he will make more appearances than canon in future chapters later on.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Season 1 Lilith is noticeably much colder and condescending than her canon self, especially towards Danica, to the point where she verbally abuses her occasionally and even went so far as to roughly grab her just to stop her from interfering with her business despite the fact that she technically outranks her. It is heavily implied that this is because she harbors some form of resentment towards Danica for some reason…
  • Affectionate Nickname: Danica’s name is shortened to “Dani” and she is referred to as such by her friends. Belos addresses her by her childhood nickname, “Stardust”.
  • All for Nothing: In "Under the Cover of Night", Danica snuck out into the Night Market for the purpose of retrieving some powerful ingredients for a potion she's trying to create. However, despite the intensive research she did on both the ingredients and their location, she learns the hard way in the following chapter that not only were the ingredients never in the Night Market in the first place, but the people who supposedly had them only started the rumors about them being in their possession so they could rob whoever came to retrieve said items. Needless to say, she did not take this too well...
    • Subverted because although she failed to get the ingredients she tried so hard to gather, her efforts encouraged Hunter to help her out with her self-imposed mission after seeing how hard she's taking her failure.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Danica grew up being constantly disrespected, neglected and misunderstood by the majority of the people in the castle because she kept failing to meet any of their expectations despite being the princess. It’s a wonder she didn’t turn for the worse with how harsh her upbringing was.
  • Alternate Universe Fic: This is a remake of the show, only with significant changes with added plot points and various OCs.
  • Ascended Extra: Hunter has a significantly larger role than in canon, starting as an Early-Bird Cameo in “Abnormal System” and eventually making appearance in most of the following chapters. He was even responsible for rescuing Danica and the others after they were pushed off a cliff in “Greedy Hunters” by magically growing a branch that caught them.
  • Bait-and-Switch: A common theme in the fanfic that’s mainly Played for Laughs.
    • In the prologue, Danica is running in Bonesborough seemingly being chased by the Emperor’s Coven scouts and eventually caught…only to quickly learn that they were actually in pursuit of Eda and were completely oblivious about Danica’s presence whatsoever.
    • Following said example, Eda throws down a magic relic that would distract the scouts…only for said relic to do nothing because it was apparently a dud she pickpocketed from someone.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: One of the reasons Danica sneaks out of home on a daily basis just to meet up with the Owl House residents is because they were some of the very first ones to treat her with decency and even accept her without hesitation after learning of her true identity.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While Danica is a kind and gentle person who normally refuses to resort to violence under any circumstances, she is willing to fight back to protect her friends if absolutely necessary.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Danica holds this towards King and is quick to develop this towards Luz shortly after meeting her for the first time, a running gag being her attempting to warn Luz beforehand about getting herself in danger with her antics. She also develops one towards Gus and Willow due to them being younger than her and the first witches around her age to accept her for her true identity.
  • Broken Ace: Danica is an attractive and smart young girl who is experienced in various fields of magic and is also a talented cook who occasionally bakes for her friends. She is even the princess of the Boiling Isles herself. However, due to her harsh upbringing, lack of influence in her position and the severe emotional neglect she endures at home, she has a tendency to blame herself for making things difficult for others and occasionally expresses self-esteem issues to the point where she refers to herself as a mere average witch when she really is anything but that. She also endures a lot of pressure from nearly everybody back home because of her position and the expectations she has no choice but to constantly attempt to meet.
  • Cool Big Sis: Danica is quick to portray herself as one since she is the oldest amongst her teenage friends and occasionally gives them encouraging advice. Many readers even commented how she and Luz are practically sisters because of their dynamic. Played further when it is revealed in "Honorable Duel" that she too developed an interest in the "Good Witch Azura" series just like Luz, much to the human's joy and Eda and King's utter horror as they grow even closer because of their now shared interests.
