Go To

In the aftermath of Sirius' death, Harry discovers that there's a Time Turner in his robes, which must have fallen in there while fighting through the Department of Mysteries. He sets out to go back in time and save Sirius — but it turns out not to be a standard Time Turner, and instead of going back six hours, he arrives in the 1930s, with no way back. Within years, Voldemort will emerge, but first, there is a larger war happening all around Harry, and he can't just stay home. After all, the prophecy never specified which dark lord he would have the power to vanquish...

When the Roses Bloom Again is a Harry Potter fanfiction written by The Black's Resurgence, who can be found here on FanFiction.Net.

This fic provides examples of:

  • Accidental Murder: Tom is caught by Myrtle Warren coming out of the Chamber of Secrets, and in a panic, sends her flying across the room with his magic, resulting in Myrtle smacking her head on a wall and dying.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: In canon, Harry Potter's grandparents are Fleamont and Euphemia Potter. In this story his grandparents are Charlus Potter and Dorea Black.
  • All for Nothing: It takes years for Tom to manipulate the ghost of Helena Ravenclaw into helping him find the Chamber of Secrets, and then he discovers that Harry has already looted and trapped the place.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: Abraxas Malfoy thinks he can use his father's political power to do whatever he wants, in one instance trying to have Harry punished. Harry in turn calls in his "uncle", Nicolas Flamel, who proceeds to give Abraxas's father a verbal beatdown.
  • Always Someone Better: At every turn, Tom finds that Harry Evans has outdone him, whether it's as simple as setting a record by learning Apparition on the first try, or as big as finding the Chamber of Secrets first, which steadily infuriates him. For extra Dramatic Irony, a big part of the reason Harry can do that is because of everything he absorbed from Tom's adult self through the piece of his soul that was in him.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Harry has had a wonderful life, but it has stretched on for so long that he's tired of it, having buried all his children and grandchildren and all his friends save Minerva.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: This is the outcome for most of the fights Harry finds himself in, with the exception of Grindelwald.
  • Curse Cut Short: When Minerva mentions at a wedding that people have expectations of Harry due to his reputation, pureblood or not, he replies that "they can kiss my..."
    Minerva: Minister Fawley!
  • Didn't Think This Through: Lord Selwyn tries to negate the betrothal of Charlus Potter and Dorea Black using a contract signed by Dorea's mentally ill father to marry one of his sons instead. Not only did he clearly not realise he'd be bringing the wrath of both the Black and Potter families down on himself, but he also didn't properly read the contract, in which there are loopholes to get out of the marriage. Even Grindelwald calls him out on his idiotic plan.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • Two in one with the Riddle family and Frank Bryce. Rather than killing them himself, Tom Riddle puts Frank Bryce under the Imperius Curse and orders him to kill the Riddle family before then killing himself, making it look like a murder-suicide.
    • Gellert Grindelwald dies in the final battle of the global wizarding war against Harry Evans, unlike in canon with him spending decades in Nurmengard before getting killed by Voldemort.
    • Myrtle Warren still dies in the second floor girl's bathroom at Hogwarts, but in this story she gets killed by Tom Riddle directly rather than by the basilisk he controls.
    • Due to the protections Harry places around the Gaunt shack, Morfin Gaunt ends up dying due to being unable to take proper care of himself rather than dying in Azkaban after getting framed for the Riddle family's murder by Tom Riddle.
  • The Dreaded: Gellert Grindelwald, Harry Evans, and Voldemort.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite everything, Grindelwald truly did seem to care about his second-in-command, Cassiopeia Black.
  • Five-Man Band: Harry Evans, Charlus Potter, Arcturus Black, Reginald Yaxley, and Derrick Gilbert during the global wizarding war.
  • Got Volunteered: Reginald Yaxley's father all but forced him to join the British forces during the global wizarding war. This is something he later comes to appreciate.
  • Hero Killer: Grindelwald can be considered this after he kills William Potter in Paris. It backfires on him when it angers many British wizards, spurring them to sign up and fight.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Subverted for Dumbledore, who is grateful that Harry stepped up to defeat Grindelwald without Dumbledore having to face his old flame.
  • In the Back: How Grindelwald kills William Potter.
  • Internal Reveal: Harry keeps his time travel firmly under wraps, but he does choose to share it with his children and closest friends when Lily Evans comes to Hogwarts looking like his granddaughter, causing both Lily and Rosa to start asking serious questions.
  • Invisibility Cloak: Due to Harry time travelling with most of his belongings, there are now two Deathly Hallow cloaks in the world.
  • Irony: Due to both her last name and physical appearance, Lily Evans is assumed to be Harry's granddaughter by many people, including James Potter at first.
  • It's Personal: The goal of defeating Grindelwald becomes this for both Harry and Charlus after the former kills William Potter: Harry's great-grandfather and Charlus' father.
  • Kicked Upstairs: How Harry tends to come by most of his positions of power during the global wizarding war.
  • Meaningful Rename: Due to no longer being able to go by Harry Potter, Harry decides to change his last name to Evans, in order to honour his mother.
  • Odd Friendship: Reginald Yaxley, the pureblood son of a noble family, and Derrick Gilbert, a muggleborn former criminal end up becoming close friends after all the years they spent in the same unit during the global wizarding war.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: Rosa is aware of where she came from, but doesn't like to see her parents kissing anyway.
Rosa: It's bad enough knowing it, we certainly don't need to see it.
  • Secret Identity: Harry has quite a few smaller ones over the course of this story, but his main one is as the HIT Wizard known as The Serpent. This eventually becomes public knowledge near the end of the global wizarding war.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: We meet quite a few parselmouths over the course of this story. There's Morfin Gaunt, Tom Riddle, Harry Evans, and Harry's children: Rosa and Jack.
  • Starter Villain: Abraxas Malfoy and a few of the Slytherins for Harry after he gets sent back to the 1930s. Not that they end up presenting much of a challenge.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Harry looks very much like both the Potters and the Blacks, which they do notice, but they're confident that there isn't a way for him to be a close relative.
  • Threat Backfire: When a young Lucius Malfoy warns Harry that, "My father will hear about this!" Harry grins and offers to supply the parchment for it.
Harry: I don't suppose your father ever told you what happened when he tried to cross me, did he?
  • Time Travel: Through the use of a unique time turner, Harry gets sent from 1996 to 1935.
  • Villain Respect: Grindelwald develops this for both Harry and his alter-ego as a hit-wizard, The Serpent.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?:
    • The Flamels have outlived all their children by centuries, and although they do have their hobbies, they aren't really passionate about life anymore. After Grindelwald's defeat, they stop taking the Elixir of Life and give the Stone to Harry, but he destroys it rather than using it.
    • As a result of using the Flamels' blood, which contained Elixir, in the ritual that purges him of the horcrux, Harry ages much more slowly, and his wife shares in that. Their children inherit a lesser version, passing 150 and outliving their spouses, but Harry and Minerva live over three centuries and watch them all go, until eventually they see a withered rose bush at Godric's Hollow and hope not to still be around when the roses bloom again.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Despite easily being able to do so, and even coming close to it at one point, Harry refuses to kill Tom Riddle whilst he's still a Hogwarts student.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: The Flamels create a ritual which allows Harry to absorb the soul fragment in his scar into his own soul. Not only does Harry not have to die now, he also gets the added benefit of learning spells that Voldemort has used in the past quicker than he normally would.
