Fanfic / When One Becomes Many

Go To

When One Becomes Many is a Love Live! fic that presents an alternate universe wherein, instead of being separate idol groups, each of the groups of Love Live! are instead separate disassocative systems, focused on Yuu Takasaki/the Niji system.

  • Abusive Parents: The Niji, µ's, and Aqours systems all have emotionally and/or physically abusive fathers.
  • Adaptational Gender Identity: Honoka and Tsubasa are trans women, You is a trans man, Rina and Kanon are non-binary, and Chika is genderfluid.
  • Adaptational Relationship Change:
    • Instead of being separate people in an idol group, all of the members of the group are instead alters within a specific system.
    • While the idol groups never interact with each other (outside of SIF), here they are already online friends with each other at the start of the fic.
    • Honoka and Tsubasa (the µ's and A-RISE systems) are dating.
  • Age Lift: All of the systems (at least their bodies) are 18 at the start of the fic, as opposed to being in high school.
  • Darker and Edgier: All of the systems have faced abuse in one form or another and the fic doesn't shy away from that.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: Due to the premise of the fic, all of the systems involved have either DID or OSDD, in addition to other mental disorders or disabilities (autism, PTSD, psychosis, etc.)
  • Hallucinations: In addition to her disassociative disorder, Kanon also deals with psychosis in the form of hallucinations and delusions; Kanon initially believes that the other members of the Liella system are part of their hallucinations.
  • Interrupted Suicide: In Chapter 8, after being forced to remember her sexual abuse by her childhood friend, Yuu (with Lanzhu's provocation) attempts to jump in front of a train but is stopped by Sarah.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Despite being a child alter, Mia still has quite the potty mouth from her introduction.
  • Split Personality: Done realistically, as the fic's author(s) are a system themselves, basing the protrayals of the systems on the real life disorders DID and OSDD and experiences that they or others have had rather than fictional exaggerations.
  • Third-Person Person: Rina speaks in this fashion.
