Vengeance
is a Marvel Cinematic Universe fanfic where a grief-stricken Steve Rogers join HYDRA after Bucky's apparent death.
Vengeance contains examples of:
- Alternate Universe: Beyond the fact that Steve is a HYDRA agent, there are other factors such as Howard being Tony's uncle or that SHIELD already existed by the time Steve decided to go rogue.
- Also, by the time Steve is unfrozen, the Avengers have been formed and the Battle of New York has been fought.
- Wanda and Pietro are also founding members of the Avengers.
- Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After his true allegiance is revealed, Tony and Wanda grab him and holding over a balcony, intending to let him fall to his death. Steve begs them to not kill him, though they are not sympathetic.
- Anti-Villain: Steve, as he's motivated by his grief and love for Bucky, rather than a belief in fascism or racial superiority. Except he's actually an Unscrupulous Hero.
- Bait-and-Switch: Throughout the fic, Steve tries to learn the identity of the Director of SHIELD, with the implication that he plans to kill him. In truth he was seeking instructions for his mission.
- The Charmer: Steve, which he sees as effective as his fighting skills.
- Comic-Book Movies Don't Use Codenames: Played with, in that most Avengers don't use codenames with the exception of Steve, Tony, Bruce, Clint and Natasha, however these are meaningless titles as there's no Secret Identity.
- Foreshadowing: While trying to adjust to being in the future, Steve makes of drawing of the past, one of which includes the Howlling Commandos. This, along with a few other moments, hint at the The Reveal.
- Hero Killer: Steve as he killed Pietro and Howard Stark.
- In Spite of a Nail: In spite of changed events, some still occur.
- Steve still ends being frozen for seventy years and Pietro still dies.
- Manipulative Bastard: Steve, bordering on The Chessmaster.
- The Mole: Steve is this to SHIELD and the Avengers. Except he's actually a pretending to be their mole, and has been secretly working for SHIELD the whole time.
- Misplaced Retribution: Steve's blames the United States for getting Bucky killed, even though the war is only occurring because the of Axis Powers' Take Over the World aims. Except not really.
- Revenge: Steve's actions were driven by his desire to avenge Bucky's death.
- Slash Fic: The main pairing is Steve and Bucky. Steve also has a sexual relationship with Brock Rumlow.
- Unscrupulous Hero: What Steve surprisingly turns out to be.
- Wham Episode: Chapter 7 changes the perception of all previous chapters.
