Go To

Two and Ten is a fanfic about the early days of Sandor "The Hound" Clegane, from his training at Casterly Rock to his experiences during the Sack of King's Landing.

Takes place in the same universe as Promise.

Can also be read here.

Two and Ten provides examples of:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Tywin chuckles at Cersei's attempt to bully Sandor when he appoints Sandor as Cersei's sworn shield.
  • Animal Motifs:
    • Dogs, as usual. Aside from Gregor being Tywin Lannister's "mad dog", it's revealed that Sandor got his name from tracking down the remaining pyromancers who were part of the plot to burn King's Landing.
"With a mischievous smile, Jaime tousled his hair, nearly scratching the area behind his good ear. Like a dog."
    • House Serret is peacocks and Harry Serret is as vain and arrogant as you'd expect a peacock to be.
  • Attack the Injury: Gerion surreptitiously tells Sandor that his stronger opponent has a bad shoulder, so Sandor attacks that a few times to beat him.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Gregor again. Sandor has set animals loose in the woods so Gregor won't find and kill them.
  • Been There, Shaped History: Sandor himself. His answer about doing what's best for House Lannister probably factored in Tywin's decision to sack King's Landing, and he assisted Jaime in The Purge of the pyromancers who were in on the plot to burn King's Landing.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Sandor recalls a time when his sister had found a cat and had taken it as a pet. He set the cat loose in the woods because Gregor would have killed it and their sister's reaction would have been unbearable, a time when Gregor only killed animals.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Serret pisses himself when Sandor beats him in a fight.
  • The Bully: There's a few, but the main one is Serret.
  • Call-Forward: During the Sack of King's Landing, Master Symond tells Sandor to aim for the heart for a quick kill.
  • Child Soldier: The 12-year-old Sandor Clegane winds up as part of the Lannister force that sacks King's Landing.
  • Deadpan Snarker:
    • Fat Jeyne, the main cook at Casterly Rock.
    Servant Girl: He's burnt!
Fat Jeyne: Aye, he's burnt. And I'm fat, for all I care.
    • She makes another jape at Cersei that leaves the latter lost for words.
Cersei: What an ugly face! Sheltering crippled boys doesn't look like my father. Is this the way you won over the squires, showing them your dreadful face?
Fat Jeyne: Still making fun of everyone. Was your day that bad, my lady?
    • Gerion Lannister. You can see where Jaime and Tyrion get their sense of humor from.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Played for Laughs when Tywin notes that he didn't think of who would be Cersei's sworn shield until Sandor is old enough.
  • Dirty Coward: Peckledon and Serret attack Sandor while he's sleeping after getting beat in training.
  • Downer Ending: Sandor returns home from war to find that the only friends he had left are gone without any explanation. The only thing he has to look forward to is a career away from his older brother.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Cersei's first scene is in the kitchens to request her meal and shows how little she thinks of the servants. Then she sees Sandor and insults him by accusing him of trying to curry sympathy with his scars.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Gregor, in his first on-page conversation with Sandor. He acts almost cordial for once.
  • Had to Be Sharp: Sandor notes that Tyrion, with his twisted body, wouldn't have survived being a Clegane.
  • Hot-Blooded: Sandor. Just look at the several fights he gets in during the story.
  • In the End, You Are on Your Own: Sandor comes to this conclusion after Fat Jeyne, his Parental Substitute at Casterly Rock, left without saying goodbye while he's away during Robert's Rebellion.
  • I Want Grandkids: Tywin is quite explicit with Cersei on this matter.
"Queens give birth to a bunch of little princes and princesses. If you ever want to have a semblance of power in King's Landing, you'd better give Robert an heir. The sooner the better."
  • Jerkass: Cersei Lannister is the resident Alpha Bitch at Casterly Rock.
  • Lady and Knight: A parody of one, where it's shown that Tywin had assigned Sandor as Cersei's sworn shield before he served Joffrey. Neither one likes each other.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Deconstructed. Gerion Lannister tells Sandor that being quick and agile will only get him so far in a fight, he also has to read his opponents and figure out their weaknesses.
Gerion: You're quick, but sometimes you need to have a good look at your opponent. Agility is good, but only once you've taken your time and understood his weaknesses.
  • The Mentor: Gerion Lannister to Sandor as he instructs him how to fight smarter.
  • Old Retainer: Downplayed with Sandor, who's not old, but he also served Cersei as her sworn shield before he served Joffrey.
  • Origins Episode: For Sandor "The Hound" Clegane, depicting how he learned how to fight and how he acquired the sobriquet "The Hound".
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Fat Jeyne mentions her son died of fever.
  • Parental Substitute: Fat Jeyne acts as a surrogate mother for Sandor during his time at Casterly Rock. Her departure from Casterly Rock, which occurred before he returned from war, made him realize that he was completely on his own.
  • Patricide: Gerion believes the rumor that Gregor killed his own father.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Sandor assists Jaime Lannister in hunting down the pyromancers who were in on the plot to burn King's Landing.
  • Rape, Pillage, and Burn: The Sack of King's Landing is shown in all its' gory detail.
  • The Runaway: The beginning of the story is where Sandor had run away from home, reaching Casterly Rock's gates before collapsing from starvation.
  • The Scapegoat: Late in the Sack, Sandor finds a group of looters and rapists. These men wind up being executed as a show of discipline to placate Ned Stark.
  • Secret-Keeper: Sandor is told by Jaime about King Aerys II's plan to burn King's Landing and assists in The Purge of those who were privy to the plan.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: Tywin and Kevan serve this role to Sandor.
Kevan: We need to know if the lad has the guts. After all, he said he wanted to fight. Who will he fight once in the battlefield? Knights, most likely.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Tywin notes to Sandor that he misjudged his intelligence when asked what to do about Robert's Rebellion. Sandor replies that he would do what's best for his house. Later on, Sandor figures out how to track the pyromancers because they would try and sell off as much as they could before fleeing.
  • The Squire: Several.
    • Sandor first serves as Kevan's squire, before being transferred to Tywin, who already has a squire, for the movements in the field during Robert's Rebellion. He later becomes Tywin's sole squire when the other squire, Banefort, is killed during the Sack of King's Landing thanks to a group of defiant sailors.
    • Gerion's squire is Serret, Sandor's rival.
  • Tagalong Kid: Sandor is the youngest person in the Lannister host that marches to King's Landing. They consider keeping him around for good luck.
  • Troll: Sandor makes his feet just loud enough to remind Cersei he's there after it's clear she doesn't want him around.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Thanks to his size, Sandor is Younger Than He Looks and as a result his voice hasn't deepened yet. It's a mark of scorn for many.
  • Young Future Famous People: Sandor of course, but Tyrion Lannister makes a cameo in Chapter 2 watching the squires spar.
