Fanfic / Touken Danshi and The Order Of The Phoenix

Go To

Touken Danshi and The Order Of The Phoenix is a Harry Potter and Touken Ranbu crossover fic by Jadisyn set in an alternate scenario where James and Lily Potter survive and abandoned Harry to the Dursleys in favor of their older OC child, only for the Dursleys to abandon him again in Japan. Now, in what is supposedly 5 years into HP canon, Harry Potter, or rather Hiroki Genji, is a prince of magical Japan living with the saniwa and personified swords in the Citadel until he's ordered to go to Hogwarts or risk losing his magic. Along with Higekiri and Hizamaru assigned to him as personal bodyguards, Harry heads to Britain and meets up with his parents, his brother and other members of the HP cast.

Early in June 2020, the author announced a rewrite of the fic due to dissatisfaction, but a new chapter was released in November of the same year.

The fic features these tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: James and Lily are treated as horrible parents, but aside from abandoning Harry, their actual treatment of him in the text doesn't support this. James is even concerned about housing Harry with Death Eater children despite the latter's hating him.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Harry and the Genji swords compared to their canon selves. The former is now a snobbish, overpowered Royal Brat with a penchant for acting Pretty Fly for a White Guy, while the latter have become considerably rude, hostile and eager to assault the HP characters for petty reasons.
  • Adaptational Wimp: The Boggart, an Eldritch Abomination in HP canon that can't ever be killed, only banished, and can't ever be defeated by violence, is now de-powered enough to die via a physical stab.
  • Alternate Universe: That James and Lily Potter are still alive and they have two children is one of the many breaks this fic has from HP canon.
  • Artistic License – History: The backstories of Higekiri and Hizamaru are greatly retconned, and given they're actual historical artifacts, it leads to this trope.
    • Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin lived in the medieval era in Europe. That would be the Heian period in Japan. How did they get their hands on Japanese swords then, especially for the former to do unspeakable things to them, especially when said swords' most prominent historical feats were accomplished in this era?
    • Japan is already in the Heisei era during the time of the HP series. The powerless Emperor of Japan shouldn't be treated as if he runs the country by the British wizarding government.
  • Artistic License – Law: It's safe to assume that without liberal application of this trope, the fic would not happen.
    • For starters, the Japanese Imperial family does not freely adopt and grant royalty status to commoners, especially a foreigner abandoned in Japan without Japanese ancestry and citizenship.
    • Assuming Harry's Japanese princehood equals Japanese citizenship, how does Britain have the right to order a foreign citizen which school he must go to?
    • If Harry was adopted by the saniwa out of the Imperial family, why does he still retain royalty?
  • Artistic License – Politics: Why does the British Ministry of Magic work with the Emperor of Japan regarding the legal issues with native ancestry of a wizard who isn't his son anymore, given that the Japanese Imperial family has no political power?
    • A white British person, with no Japanese blood and no relation to the divine-descended Imperial family, gets taken into the family that plays an important role in Japanese public consciousness as their national symbol and even gets an actual royal title. That should go over fantastically with the Japanese public.
    • While in Britain, Harry and co., effectively national representatives, get away with constantly committing acts that should realistically get them declared Persona Non Grata there, not to mention other disastrous foreign relations consequences. Gems include openly insulting Hogwarts and wizarding Britain, assaulting civilians and willingness to go to absurd lengths to coerce Hogwarts staff into giving Harry preferential treatment.
  • Asian Rudeness: It becomes clear from all other tropes on this page that Harry and co. are this.
  • "Ass" in Ambassador: Even though Harry and co. are essentially national representatives, they are openly hostile to the British and get away with it.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Gryffindor committed this on Higekiri and Hizamaru in the past in order to study them.
  • Conflict Ball: If Harry hates going to Hogwarts and only wants to finish his required schooling so he can keep his magic, why don't he and his crew take the wiser, more diplomatic route of just going along with it and not getting hated by everyone? Why make negotiations with Hogwarts more difficult and pick fights with everyone every step of the way? At the rate Harry and co. are going, it's only the need to continue the conflict that's not making the British declare enough is enough and kick the obnoxious foreigners out of their country.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Did Higekiri just kill a Boggart by stabbing it like it's a good ol' human? For that matter, did he just kill a Boggart period?
  • Excuse Plot: The whole plot of the fic wouldn't happen if some of the characters hadn't committed wildly unexplainable actions that kick it off:
    • First off, the Potters decided to leave their younger son for no reason.
    • The Dursleys then left him to die in Japan also for no reason at all.
    • And finally a non-canonical law requiring wizards to study in their country of origin was pull out of thin air so the British Ministry of Magic can force Harry to go to Hogwarts.
  • Fake Aristocrat: Harry; the fic labels him an actual prince, but considering how Japanese royalty works, he's actually this.
  • Forgot About His Powers: The wizards never attempt to use their powers to stop the swords from physically assaulting them.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: Often committed by Harry and his swords/protectors, even in Britain towards British people not established to know Japanese or understand what they say.
  • Happily Adopted: Arguably too happily by means of Artistic License – Law – abandoned Harry was adopted by the Imperial family and becomes Japanese royalty despite being fully British before later apparently being adopted by the saniwa, all while still retaining royalty status. All this is despite his never being stated to have undergone an immigration process.
  • Helicopter Parents: The saniwa – he derides Hogwarts as not safe enough for his adoptive son to study in and coerces Dumbledore into granting Harry special treatment, even going so far as to threaten to relocate the entire Citadel onto Hogwarts grounds, practically threatening to declare war on them, until the school gives in.
  • Intercontinuity Crossover: The fic seems to forget the two continuities being crossed over are set 3 centuries apart, to say nothing of the incompatible worldbuilding, magic systems and cultural elements.
  • Karma Houdini: Aside from a few instances of annoyance from the HP side, don't expect Harry and co. to face consequences for their behavior any time soon.
  • Mad Scientist: Godric Gryffindor, who in this fic is a raging sadist who conducts torturous experiments on the Genji swords and thus their souls.
  • Mean Boss: The text implies the saniwa effectively pursues comfort for Harry at the expense of all his men – he's dead-set on arming Harry with sword-bodyguards, whether a team or a whole Citadel of them, what the swords might feel about this be damned.
  • Original Character: James Potter Jr., James and Lily's other son and Harry's older brother.
  • Out of Character: Many important canon characters. Harry Potter is an arrogant Royal Brat with Pretty Fly for a White Guy tendencies, James Potter is (still) an immature, petty bully, Godric Gryffindor is a sadistic psychopath destroying Japanese historical artifacts for kicks. The TouRabu side doesn't fare any better – Higekiri and Hizamaru are nearly as rude as their masters and way too quick to berate and physically assault the British for the slightest perceived transgressions.
  • Parental Abandonment: Harry was abandoned by the Potters for no readily explained reason, and the Dursleys tossed him again in Japan also for no readily explained reason.
  • Pretty Fly for a White Guy: Harry's need to prove how Japanese he is comes off as this – he speaks Gratuitous Japanese to people who likely don't know the language and sleeps in a futon in 12 Grimmauld Place where bedding could be provided for him.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: Harry and co.'s actions and attitude are never portrayed as wrong, even when they should, and anyone who don't like them and argue against them are portrayed as unreasonable.
  • Royal Brat: While not as ragingly obnoxious as the saniwa or his guardian swords, Harry is still not a nice person – he looks down on wizarding Britain, especially the use of wands, smugly asserts his superiority, is hostile to his biological family despite their having not done anything truly bad to him, and asserts his Japanese upbringing in a way that would get him branded a weeaboo in real life.
  • Story-Breaker Team-Up: There's the fact the swords' fighting style would logically be at a disadvantage compared to wizards' ranged spell-casting. However, the fic goes the other way around, with the former's constantly assaulting the latter, while the latter stand around and never intervene.
  • That Man Is Dead: The use of Harry's canon name on this page is for the sake of avoiding confusion. In the fic, he doesn't want to be associated with the Potters and prefers being known as "Hiroki Genji".
  • Weird Crossover: It's Touken Ranbu meets Harry Potter and not Played for Laughs, a parody or anything of the sort. It doesn't get any weirder than that.
  • Would Be Rude to Say "Genocide": Hizamaru apparenly has "Muggle's Bane" as an extra name. Nobody has a problem with this; even the Potters of all people are more concerned about the Genji's famous owners than the fact Muggle genocide is being treated as a cool name.
