The Unwanted Harem of Nathan Adams is a fanfiction by Black Omochao, based off the Yo-kai Watch franchise, primarily the anime.
The story is Exactly What It Says on the Tin, with the young protagonist; Nathan Adams, inexplicably finding himself with an Unwanted Harem.
What starts as a seemingly normal day, soon descends into madness as all of Nate's female classmates (aside from his crush; Katie Forester), seem to have fallen madly in love with him, for no explainable reason. Things only get crazier from there...
Can be read on Fanfiction.net, Archive Of Our Own, or SpaceBattles.
This fanfic provides examples of:
- Accidental Proposal: Accepting Damona's medal, after freeing her from the Crank-a-Kai, apparently counted as a binding engagement to marry her. Nate is, of course, horrified when he is told this. The fact that being able to get out of it without suffering a Fate Worse than Death seems unlikely doesn't help.
- Affectionate Nickname: Damona calls Nate "honey", while Blizzaria calls him "darling".
- Affectionate Parody: Of the Harem Genre.
- All Love Is Unrequited: It is an unwanted harem, after all.
- Like in the anime the story is based on: Nate is in love with Katie, she doesn't notice.
- Bear has a crush on Lulu, but she's in love with Nate.
- Many of the boys in class are infatuated with Fubuki, but she only has eyes for Nate. Doesn't stop her from taking advantage of it, of course.
- Kyubi has a crush on Katie, which she doesn't notice any more than Nate's.
- Alpha Bitch: While she had initially attempted to appear nicer, as of Chapter 9; Fubuki seems intent on becoming this.
- Ascended Extra: Several characters get more focus than in the anime, but a notable example is Toiletta, who moves into the Adams' house in Chapter 3.
- Jibanyan's old owner, Amy-who lacks much presence in both the games and anime, outside of Jibanyan's backstory-meets Nate in Chapter 4, and becomes a reoccurring character from that point onward.
- Elisabeth Stone was originally a nameless One-Shot Character from the anime, here she's given a name and is part of the, previously unseen, Class 5-3 of Springdale Elementary. She's also a Yandere!
- Bland-Name Product: Chapter 8 has Nate, Toiletta, and Amy playing a game called Hyper Bash Family: Infinity.
- Chapter 10 has Katie and Emma play a few rounds of Alley Combatant 2.
- Butt-Monkey: Nate finds it rare to go a day where he's not nearly torn apart by his harem, or subjected to some other form of misfortune or abuse.
- Whisper also gets his fair share of abuse.
- Cannot Spit It Out: Even with the possibility of picking a girl ending the harem, Nate still can't bring himself to admit his feelings to Katie.
- Canon Immigrant: Chapter 7 has Fubuki Himekawa transfer into Nate's class, though, she is actually Blizzaria in disguise.
- Chapter 10 introduces the character of Emma Daiouji.
- Childhood Marriage Promise: When Nate was four years old, he met and befriended Kirene, then promised to marry her when they were older. In Chapter 12, she tracks him down and plans to make him keep that promise.
- Children Are Innocent: Authors' notes have stated that, though the story will be parodying and using many tropes associated with the Harem Genre, the amount of Fanservice typically associated with the genre won't be present, because of the characters' ages.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Many of the girls in Nate's harem display this trait.
- Cordon Bleugh Chef: Sailornyan makes chocobar-tuna casserole for a sick Nate.
- Crash-Into Hello: Nate first meets Amy when she runs into him with her bike.
- Creepy Twins: While not actually twins, or even sisters, Lina and Zoey like acting the part.
- Death Glare: Chloe and Sydney give Nate particularly fierce ones after he accidentally bumps into Isabel.
- Demoted to Extra: As of Chapter 5, Jibanyan has moved out of Nate's house. This, naturally, means he appears less frequently.
- Foreign Exchange Student: Toiletta pretends to be one named Hanako Letrina in order to explain her presence in Nate's house.
- Genre Savvy: Hailey is well aware of the Harem Genre, and recognizes what is going on. Of course, she intends to use this knowledge to her advantage.
- Harem Seeker: Kyubi tries to take advantage of Nate's desire to be rid of his harem, in order to swoop in and claim it for himself. It doesn't work very well.
- Hot Drink Cure: When Nate is sick, Insomi and Sandi make him coffee and warm milk, respectively.
- I Just Want to Be Normal: While Nate still doesn't like being considered 'average,' he would really rather not have a 'harem.'
- Imagine Spot:
- Nate has several relating to the girls of his harem.
- Meg has one about Nate choosing her to be his girlfriend.
- Inexplicably Identical Individuals: The fact that Blizzaria, Camellia, and Damona, all look identical, aside from coloration, is lampshaded. No explanation has been given.
- Instant Fan Club: The moment Fubuki enters Nate's class, the majority of the boys are already smitten with her.
- Interspecies Adoption: Amy seems to see herself more as Jibanyan's mother, rather than his owner, and certainly acts the part. She also wants Nate to be the 'papa,' much to both his and Jibanyan's chagrin.
- Literally Falling in Love: Brooke meets Nate when she trips on her way out of class, and he manages to catch her in his arms, she is instantly smitten with him.
- Lover Tug of War: Happens to Nate multiple times throughout the story.
- Marry Them All: Damona seems partially convinced this is going to happen, and doesn't mind; so long as she is the 'main' wife. Nate, however, despite a brief Imagine Spot, is fully against the idea.
- Marshmallow Hell: Insomni and Sandi seem to enjoy subjecting Nate to this, and in Chapter 9, Little Charrmer inflicts it on him.
- Named by the Adaptation: Fiona's sister is named Bonnie.
- New Transfer Student: Several of the female yo-kai pose as new students in order to get closer to Nate.
- On the Next: Added to the end of each chapter from Chapter 6, onward. These 'promos' even refer to the chapters as 'episodes.'
- Paper-Thin Disguise: It's not exactly hard to guess that Fubuki Himekawa is Blizzaria.
- Precocious Crush: Though yo-kai ages are hard to place, Sailornyan's crush on Nate is treated this way.
- Also, Fiona's younger sister gains a crush on Nate.
- Recurring Dreams: Starting with Chapter 7, Nate starts to have dreams about a supposed camping trip from when he was four-years-old, in which he is friends with a young yo-kai girl, named Kirene Bundory. Nate indicates he used to have these dreams frequently when he was younger, but is surprised to be having them again now.
- Nate finds himself confused after one dream when Kirene calls herself a yo-kai, since he wouldn't have known of yo-kai back when he was originally having those dreams. He isn't sure if Kirene had always called herself a yo-kai in the dreams, or if he subconsciously added it in these new instances.
- Related in the Adaptation: Chapter 3 reveals Nate and Jessica to be cousins.
- Despite their similar appearances, Insomni and Sandi have no canonical family relationship. In this story; they're twin sisters.
- Falsina is Damona's younger sister.
- Shout-Out: The way Nate meets, and becomes engaged to, Damona, is very similar to how he does in amf studios' Damona in the Details.
- Single-Target Sexuality: Nate is firm on his stance of wanting to date Katie, and only Katie. Downplayed, as he does feel attraction towards several girls in his harem, particularly Isabel, but he vocally denies the idea, and considers such thoughts as 'evil.'
- Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Early on, Whisper suggests this as a possible reason for Nate's sudden Chick Magnet status. Nate, however, doesn't find that very believable.
- Soup Is Medicine: Blizzaria makes oyaku for a sick Nate...ice-cold okayu. Sailornyan, on the other hand, makes him proper chicken soup.
- Tsundere: Chloe and Sydney have adopted these personas, according to Hailey.
- Twin Threesome Fantasy: Insomni and Sandi have no issue with the idea of sharing Nate between them.
- When the above twins claim that Nate is their boyfriend, while in human disguise, Megan Jones makes a comment about how she wishes she 'were triplets.' As Meg has been shown to be a bit of a Clingy Jealous Girl up to now, it's pointed out how it's unlikely she'd be able to share Nate with two more of herself, Meg counters this by saying she's too adorable to be jealous of.
- Vague Age: Yokai ages are really hard to place or understand if not explicitely mentioned. Tellingly, Whisper openly admits to not understanding it.
- What Does She See in Him?: Many of the boys, and Katie, can't help but question why so many girls have suddenly fallen in love with Nathan Adams, but most of the girls couldn't even tell you why, they just have.
