Set immediately after the end of Jurassic World, The Scaly Raptor is a fanfiction with a simple premise; what if Owen had received an amulet from his grandfather that apparently allows him to understand animal's speech and gain special abilities? No harm in trying, right?

About a week later, he now has the ability to transform back-and-forth into a raptor. And later on, so does Claire, and then thanks to her ability to now understand Owen's speech, it doesn't take long before Blue and other dinosaurs start to join in the fun...

The fic is posted on SpaceBattles and FanFiction.

The Scaly Raptor has examples of

  • Action Girl: Blue and her sisters, Claire, Nima, Jess...
  • Actor Allusion: Owen listens to "Hooked On A Feeling" at one point.
    • Continues in Blue's dream in chapter 5. See Shout-Out below.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Human!Rexy, a.k.a 'Roxanne'. Claire also develops quite a bit after spending a week as a Tyrannosaurus in the jungle.
  • Ambiguous Gender: The Carnoraptor and incidentally, Delta. Creates a nice Call-Back to when Hoskins kept calling Delta "boy" though it doesn't make his behavior any less dickish.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Charlie lost her leg and part of her tail after getting in the explosion of the rocket launcher in the film. However, she's on the road to recovery thanks to her Healing Factor.
  • Animal Wrongs Group: Nick Van Owen is considered an eco-terrorist.
    • A group of activists once tried to release a school of Megapiranha from a research facility in Brazil.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Tiamat, the Titanoboa that rampages for about an hour after getting released. It is defeated by Claire, thankfully.
  • Bait-and-Switch: A hybrid raptor apparently stalking the group was actually there to join them.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Claire pulls one and kills Tiamat in T-Rex form, saving Jess, Rexy (stuck in human form), Ami and Sunset from the giant snake.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Being human doesn't stop Rexy from punching out hybrid dinosaurs or taking on Dr. White and knocking her out in minutes.
  • Canine Confusion: An in-universe example when Biosyn creates Raptor/Dire Wolf hybrids, because dogs are easy to train. Grace calls the man telling her such out on this (being an expert on the subject), declaring that dogs are easily trained because humans spent thousands of years domesticating them. Wolves are not remotely easy to train.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Owen considers Raptor Squad to be his daughters. Unfortunately, this means they're daughters of an ex-Navy man, with the vocabulary to match.
  • Cool Big Sis: Sunset the young Ceratosaurus seems to view Blue and her sisters as one.
  • Covert Pervert: Ami blushes while wondering how it feels like to be a dinosaur.
  • Death Glare: Ever since turning into a Tyrannosaurus, Claire gives people who annoy her looks that makes them feel like they're staring down a predator.
  • Dream Sequence: One that spoofs Jurassic World.
  • The Dreaded: Anne is seen as his by the raptor pack that lives on Mount Watson, who actively avoid humans because of this one unfortunate experience when single human crossed paths with them years before.
  • Drunk On Power: Played for Laughs, as Claire comments on the sheer amount of power her Tyrannosaurus form has.
  • Enemy Mine: Scarred-One is willing to team up with Owen and company against Dr. White because their interests align with hers.
  • Expy: In Blue's Dream Sequence, the human characters and dinosaur characters switch roles.
    • Indominus Rex = Hoskins
    • Blue = Owen
    • "Not-prey" (humans) = raptors
    • Tyrannosaur hatchlings = Grey and Zach
    • Charlie = Barry
    • Rexy = Claire
    • Mosasaurus = Zara
  • Face Death with Dignity: Rexy isn't overly bothered by the idea of dying if the island has to be evacuated. However she still accepts a way out when Claire presents it.
  • Healing Factor: Charlie has one, thanks to her iguana DNA.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: Sunset the Ceratosaurus. With one eye and a limping leg, she captures the hearts of the park employees and YouTube viewers, after a video of her hunting a bug goes viral.
  • Hot Skitty-on-Wailord Action: Heavily implied by this exchange:
Any argument from Claire died as he scrapped his teeth against the crook of her neck with a growl not unlike his raptors. "I think that is quite enough work related activities for the night, Miss Dearing...
Placing the laptop onto the side table, Claire turned toward him with her teeth showing as a deep rumble escaped her. "Perhaps you're right, Mr. Grady...
  • Hypocritical Humor: The janitors and maintenance workers chafe at being considered Beneath Notice by the other park employees but don't bother trying to learn the names of said employees.
  • I Have Your Wife: During the movie, what exactly did the Indominus say to the Raptor Squad to make them initially switch sides? She promised to spare Owen and Barry and allow them to leave the island. Naturally, she was lying and the Raptors weren't pleased.
  • Inherently Funny Words: Bink-A! Bink-A! Binkabinkabinkabinka!
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Both Claire and Barry's hilarious reactions to seeing Owen the talking raptor.
  • Innocent Innuendo: Several times, due to human!Blue/Blaire's combination of teenage hormones, language and Owen.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Rexy had adopted Claire as her own before the latter's ability to transform, and even calls Claire her 'Tall Daughter'.
    • Ami, a human and Sunset, a young Ceratosaurus.
  • Interspecies Romance: A (not-yet canon) snippet features Human!Rexy flirting with Dr. Grant.
  • Just Woke Up That Way: Owen first discovers the power of the amulet by sponaneously waking up as a raptor.
  • Karmic Death: Dodgson being indirectly killed by the very woman he tried to kill earlier.
  • Mama Bear: Rexy to Claire, Claire to the raptors, Rexy to Sunset, Ami to Sunset...
    • Rexy hears that something is bothering Claire.
"... What is wrong and what do I need to fight and kill?"
  • Misanthrope Supreme: Dr. White, in full spades. She is ultimately defeated by the power of teamwork between humans and dinosaurs.
  • Morphic Resonance: Anyone who changes into a dinosaur, and any dinosaur who changes into a human, has markings indicative of their natural form. (i.e. Blue has tattoos like her markings, Claire has red markings similar to her hair).
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Grace's entrance tagging along with Dodgson and getting pushed overboard is taken from Sarah Harding's story in the novel The Lost World.
    • The mutants created by "Project Chaos Effect" are taken from the Chaos Effect toyline.
  • Papa Wolf: Owen and Barry to the raptors, especially since Owen can now understand them. Gerry Harding is also highly protective of his daughter.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: When hiding from a hybrid that can smell their presence, Grace pushes Dodgson (who'd previously tried to kill her) out of their hiding spot, causing him to be eaten.
  • Power Perversion Potential: When thinking over the offer of the use of the amulet, Ami blushes while wondering how it would be like to be a dinosaur.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Claire demands to know why she wasn't told about the other hybrid dinosaurs that had hatched (and were now in the care of Jurassic World). It turns out that she was via memos, but they hatched the same day that the Indominus got out, and in between rebuilding the park, a PR campaign, recapturing the dinosaurs, and Owen finding a magical amulet, Claire just didn't see those reports. When she demands to know why the memos were called "Low Priority," she's told that that's standard procedure- the hybrids appeared healthy enough, so no action needed to be taken. No one was at fault, just reports lost in bureaucracy... which convinces Claire to finally replace Zara, her former secretary, after four months.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Scarred-One keeps her pack away from humans and warns of another pack planning to attack humans because she realizes how dangerous they are.
    • Earlier she allows Owen and Blue to hunt Tiamat in her territory since either they win and rid her of a dangerous predator, or they lose and Tiamat is kept away from her pack for a bit longer.
  • Properly Paranoid: Owen's demands of his sister, such as keeping a satellite phone in a tough waterproof case, end up saving her life.
    • Later on, Grace asks Nima how to protect one's self from demons, ghosts and other supernatural threats due to the history and legends of the islands where she'll be working.
  • Secret-Keeper: As more people begin transforming, there's Claire, Barry, Jess, Gerry, Ami, Nima Cruz, Vivian, Lowery and Atlanta Cruz.
  • Sense Freak: Goes both ways. Humans are amazed at how good their sense of smell and (sometimes) sight have become while dinosaurs marvel at taste and touch.
  • Serious Business: Rexy and Blue fight a lot over the tv remote.
  • Lady Swears-a-lot: Blue has a vocabulary colorful enough to make a sailor blush. Given that her "Daddy" actually was in the Navy, it's pretty understandable. Her sisters have much more refined vocabulary... in terms of swearing, that is.
  • Schmuck Bait: From the very first snippet: Why not? What's the worst that could happen? Of course... (Also counts as Tempting Fate.)
  • Shout-Out: Blue's dream in chapter 5 recreates the finale of Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) with the Indominus as Ronan, complete with Owen stating that they are the "Guardians of the Island".
  • Sick and Wrong: Owen is grossed out when his sister implies he'd be attracted to Blue's human form given that he sees her as his daughter (and biologically, she is). Likewise, he gets upset earlier when it's implied that his raptor form be used for breeding with "his" girls.
  • Slasher Smile: Even before Claire becomes a T-rex, she's noted as sometimes giving a smile that's more teeth than friendliness.
  • So Proud of You: Rexy after Claire kills Tiamat. She's slightly miffed that she can't tell the whole world how the Titanboa really died.
  • Spared By Adaptation: Charlie, Delta, Echo, Masrani, and Jurassic World as a whole were all able to dodge their deaths in this version of events, as confirmed by the author.
  • Spirited Competitor: Rexy as Roxanne is very interested in physical competition, likely due to her desire to show dominance. When she beats an ACU member at arm wrestling, she has no problems arm wrestling the rest of them.
  • Spit Take: Owen after human!Blue calls him 'Daddy'.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Rexy's human form is apparently at least One Head Taller than Claire.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Tiamat, the Titanaboa
  • Tastes Like Chicken: The Compsognathus, apparently.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Besides the obvious benefits from being able to turn into a T-Rex, Claire also becomes noticeably more fit after using the amulet, now looking like she hits the gym a couple times a week instead of once a month.
  • Translator Microbes: One effect of the amulet. There's a hilarious scene where a frustrated raptor!Owen imitates a long sequence of sounds he once heard Blue use in similar circumstances, and its only after he's finished that he realized what he just said.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: The whole point of the story. Owen, Claire, Blue, Rexy, Ami and now Jess Harding have it, and it's implied other characters will be offered the use of the magic amulet later on.
  • Wham Line: Say hello to the Indominus Sapiens.
  • You No Take Candle: Human!dinosaurs tend to speak this way until they become more accustomed to speaking English. Untransformed ones do as well since their languages aren't big on syntax, just getting a message across.
