• Conveniently an Orphan: King Bowser is said to be this in the prologue.
• The Cult: Mentioned —
  Narrator: 'The Great Dragon Koopa Cull' happened half a millennia ago and was begun by a group of ordinary Koopas who were jealous of the Dragon-Koopas unique ability and falsely placed the blame for everything that was wrong with the world on their shoulders. People actually listened to the rubbish that they came out with and soon, mobs (No, not ''That'' Mob!) went from house to house ruthlessly murdering suspected Dragon-Koopas, burning them alive or cutting off their heads and placing them on stakes outside the gates of the royal palace.
• Disappeared Dad: Ludwig's father, Johann Von Koopa, was killed by a riptide. It's later revealed to be intentional by Silas.
• Friendless Background: Every 'friend' Roy had before Ludwig were fake and said they could trust him, only to mock him later.
• Forbidden Zone: Earth. See Irony below for why it's forbidden.
• Irony: Why is earth off-limits? Just a few toads (which are usually cute) freaking out the humans living there has resulted in its closure.
  Narrator: The fact that a couple of Toads, possibly one of the most docile species ever, could have frightened the people living on Gaia made Ludwig want to laugh. They must be a foolish species indeed!
• Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Elliot koopa. He mocks Ludwig, calling him 'Toothwig'. In Chapter 6, he even gets malicious about him.
  Ludwig: "Elliot, don't you have anything better to do?"
  Elliot: "Nothing more fun than taunting you, Toothwig."
  Ludwig: "Oh dear, still vith the silly names I see. Veren't seven veeks enough to come up vith something more original?"
  Elliot [With Darker and Edgier expression]:"Do you know who you're talking to?"
  Ludwig [sharply speaking]: "I'm talking to you, you cantankerous git."
  Elliot [Throws notebook to the ground]: "That's it, you're in for it now, Ludwig."
• Hate Sink: Elliot. He clearly Jumped Off the Slippery Slope and now wants to kill Ludwig.
• Missing Mom: Roy's mother, Kaiya, was killed while possessed by a dark spirit after trespassing into a passageway during a trip to the Pyramids.
• Off with His Head!: Lampshaded -
  Elliot: "Ordinary Koopas aren't a huge fan of Dragon ones, I wonder what will happen when everyone finds out? It'd be such a shame if your friends turned on you… I just hope that, for your sake, no one ever finds out. But if they did, what would you rather? Being burnt alive or having your head cut off? "Because I know what I'd choose-"
  Elliot [lunging]: "YOUR HEAD!!!"
  Ludwig: "AAAAAAKKKK!!!!"
• Take Over the World: Silas's Evil Plan.
• Teacher's Pet: In-Universe Example - Ludwig is treated like this to a lot of people, especially Elliot.
• Villain Protagonist: The koopalings, viewed as villains in the Super Mario series, are viewed as the Protagonists here.
