Fanfic / The Good Basilisk Luzura

Go To

The Good Basilisk Luzura is an AU of The Owl House, where Luz is unknowingly half-basilisk due to her father having managed to escape the Isles as a child, only to awaken to her inhuman heritage once she crosses over herself.

The Good Basilisk Luzura contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In this universe Amity is significantly nicer to start than she was in canon.
  • Adaptational Species Change: In this universe Manny was a basilisk whose mother fled with him through a portal into the human realm, making Luz a hybrid.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It isn't made clear if Camila knows that Manny/Manil was a basilisk, much less if Luz is a Half-Human Hybrid or not.
  • Body Horror: Chapter 23 has some mild body horror with the description of Luz shedding, especially since Tre had to use a very sharp knife on her face to get things started. It doesn't help that the chapter this happens in is called "Luz Peels Her Face Open Like A Banana".
  • Content Warnings: Chapter 23 has a warning due to it going into some Body Horror territory with Luz's molt.
  • Family Theme Naming: The two basilisks hiding with the Bat Queen are named Tre and Ivy, and like Vee's name in canon their names both consist of three letters that play on their numerical designations.
  • Foreshadowing: In Chapter 21, Luz's eyes look different and her vision is a little cloudy, which Luz initially brushes off as allergies. The very next chapter reveals that it's because Luz is ready to shed her skin for the first time.
  • Forgets to Eat: A variant, Luz, new to her basilisk physiology, forgets to consume any magic after her first trip to Hexside, to the point that she collapses when returning to the Owl House after the Wailing Star.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: After awakening her powers Luz initially struggles to shapeshift back to her human form.
  • Identical Stranger: Luz in her basilisk form apparently looks close enough to Vee that Tre and Ivy think that she is Vee upon initially seeing her before Luz corrects them. According to author comments this is because they're technically cousins, as Vee and the other basilisks that Belos made are Grimwalkers, and Vee was made from the corpse of Manny's brother, making her his "kid".
  • Limited Wardrobe: Lampshaded by the narration, as even though Luz has enough clothes to wear a different outfit combination every day of camp, it notes that she'll probably just wear her favorite hoodie most of the time instead.
  • The Nose Knows: The Bat Queen is able to realize that Luz is a basilisk due to her scent.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: When One impersonates the Inspector, she doesn't call him by his name like the Inspector does, and that and her other behavior makes him realize that she's an imposter.
  • Precision F-Strike: Eda lets out one of these when she learns how the basilisk clones were made, though Luz hears it while covering her ears, so it sounds like Eda is saying "SHUT THE DUCK!"
  • Sensor Character: As a Greater Basilisk, One is able to sense the presence of other Basilisks.
  • Shout-Out:
    • There are a number of references to Animorphs in the story, to the point that it's even a tag.
    • When Tre and Ivy are telling Luz how they were brought back, Luz thinks of Paleozoic Park.
    • One of Eda's potion customers is a M. Rasmodius.
    • One Potions teacher at Hexside is a woman with a fondness for smoke bombs named Mrs. Lulamoon.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Luz had no idea that she was a Half-Human Hybrid basilisk until she ended up in the Boiling Isles and her powers awakened.
