Fanfic / The Dragon's Roar

Go To

The War for the Dawn was won. The living triumphed. But unfortunately, it was a terrible price. Due to the War of the Five Kings interrupting the kingdoms preparations for the long night, the prince that was promised died defeating the Night's King alongside his surprise ally Jamie Lannister. And so, seeing the loss of their faith if things continued without good leadership, the Gods decide to make a risky play: send two souls back in time in order to help make the prophecy work just a little better.

And so begins The Dragon's Roar, as Jon Snow and his trusted ally Jamie Lannister are sent back into the past separate from each other to help bring the Dawn just a little more successfully than last time. In their alliance, the old world will tremble as they work their knowledge and skills into a new age for Westeros.

Tropes in this Work include..

  • Batman Gambit: Using a bit of their knowledge of what happened to Jon Arryn, Jon uses false documents to try and trick a confession out of Lysa Arryn.
  • Child by Rape: A horrific example, as Cersei uses Jamie's injury as a way to try and get pregnant by him after he scorned her advancements for years. And unfortunately, succeeds at it.
  • The Coup:
    • While Renly pulls this first when news trickles in of Aemon capturing Robert up north, his support is too weak to last too long.
    • Tywin and Roose attempt this as their own play to get power back in their hands.
  • Demoted to Extra: The Ironborn don't factor nearly as much into this story compared with much of canon. Aside from brief mentions of Theon's new awe, and being hired to attack Jamie, Balon generally seems to lack the ability to act against the mainland.
  • Genre Blindness: Tywin thinks in a mentality of Thicker Than Water when making his play for the throne. He doesn't quite realize that he's in a buddy drama where his son has learned his lessons about putting the realm above all and understanding how far his family has fallen.
  • He Knows Too Much: Aemon uses this justification partially to keep Melisandre at arms length. She was too violent in their past life, and her recognizing them as time travelers in the next one makes for too many awkward questions with a new religion.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: After experiencing two wars together, including one for survival, Jon and Jamie are as close as can be in working for a better future for Westeros.
  • History Repeats: Despite trying for a more peaceful resolution to everything, Oberyn still fights a Trial by Combat with The Mountain.
  • Official Couple: Despite the kingly powers of the other main couple, Jamie's re-romancing of Brienne is the main backbone of the romantic parts of the first part of the story.
  • Wham Line: When trying to think of a way to placate the Tyrells for helping to stop the coup of king's landing, Aemon comes up with a brilliant and sensible move. To name a Tyrell as new Master of Coin. Olenna.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Jojen tells them that Bran needs to satisfy his conditions to become the Three Eyed Raven again. And that can only come through suffering. Jon keeps him from breaking his legs... but later on he's blinded in a different attack.
