Fanfic / The Dark Lord Never Died

Go To

The Dark Lord Never Died by Starfox5 is a complete Harry Potter Alternate Universe Fanfic in which Lucius Malfoy tricks the wizarding world into believing that Voldemort did not die, allowing him to crush the remaining resistance forces and remake Britain in his pureblood image.

Tropes:

  • Alchemy Is Magic: A branch of magic, to be more precise. Albus Dumbledore has had twenty years of exile to perfect his alchemical concoctions and he puts them to great use.
  • Affably Evil: Lucius Malfoy to muggleborns. He never called them mudbloods, and when he visited Hogwarts he was polite and even brought presents. Neverthless he had ordered their parents murdered, their memories obliviated, and was brainwashing them so they could join the Wands of Britain.
  • The Alcatraz: Nurmengard, Grindenwald's magical prison whose wards are extremely powerful, as they were created with the help of the Elder Wand plus Blood Magic and Human Sacrifice. Harry and Dumbledore break into it while following a lead on a Horcrux.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Lucius Malfoy had an easy time convincing British wizards that the Boy Who Lived was a False Flag Operation, considering no one had ever survived the Killing Curse before.
  • Brainless Beauty: Marissa Micklebrock.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Draco, who is motivated to seduce Hermione when he learns she's dating 'Antoine', a Quebecois pureblood.
  • The Charmer: Ron Weasley. It's implied because he grew up in France.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder/Odd Friendship: Luna and Hermione are friends, because of an unspecified bullying Luna suffered in her first year at Hogwarts.
  • Dating Catwoman: Ron soon develops a sexual and romantic relationship with Wand-Leader Hermione.
  • Day of the Jackboot: The Death Eaters take over wizarding Britain.
  • Despair Event Horizon: The Wizarding World suffers from this when Lucius decieves it into thinking that Voldemort did not actually die.
  • Double Reverse Quadruple Agent: Severus Snape, who is working for Lucius Malfoy, Voldemort, and Albus Dumbledore.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: The Wands of Britain are elite units composed of brainwashed muggleborns loyal to the Minister of Magic, Lucius Malfoy.
    • The Gendarme Magique, the French version of Aurors, also count
  • Elite Mooks: Played with. Everyone thinks that Aurors are this, but because Lucius has slashed the Auror budget, lowered the standards for admission has made his own corps, the Wands of Britain, to be the secret elite corps of the Wizarding World.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: It seems everyone in wizarding Britain thinks Voldemort is half-naga. The Dark Lord is not amused, but Lucius Malfoy defintely is.
  • Entitled to Have You: Draco to Hermione
  • Everyone Has Standards: Ron, who at this point is outright lying and exploiting Hermione's love and trust to spy on and fight against her government, is outraged at Draco forcing Muggle-born witches to have sex with him.
  • Everyone Looks Sexier if French: Harry Potter and the Weasleys, the younger ones anyway.
  • False Flag Operation: Lucius manages to take over by convincing the Wizarding World that Voldemort did not die when he attacked Goddric's Hollow.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Lucius taking over the Ministry causes a lot of changes, but the most notable is that Harry Potter is rescued from the Dursleys, and taken to France. As a result, Harry is a less angry, bitter person as well as being more knowledgeable about the wizarding world.
  • Frameup: In The Epilogue, Minister of Magic Dumbledore is framing purebloods who supported Lucius Malfoy in order to confiscate their wealth and prevent pureblood supremacists from restoring their status quo after his death.
  • Gotta Catch Them All: The Horcruxes, which the remnants of the Order of the Phoenix and Lucius's Britain are searching for.
  • Guilt by Association: As part of their training, muggleborns are brainwashed to be ashamed of their muggle heritage due to the muggles' attempts at killing wizards and witches.
  • Gratuitous French: Ron often slips into French unconsciously.
  • Hopeless War: The first wizarding war ends with the Death Eaters taking over and Dumbledore, the Weasleys, and others fleeing to France.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Colin is slain this way by an Inferi mutant.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Instead of doing a Final Solution like in canon, the Death Eater-controlled Ministry simply kidnaps Muggle-born children, Obliviates them and their parents, and brainwashes them to be loyal to him.
  • La Résistance: There's still anti-Death Eater forces in wizarding Britain, but they've been weakened from more than a decade of fighting against the Death Eater-controlled Ministry.
  • Lowered Recruiting Standards: Lucius did this to the Aurors, in order to weaken them and allow his Wands to become the de facto Elite Mooks of the Ministry.
  • That Man Is Dead: As part of their training, Muggle-borns are taught that they have no family, only their country is family.
Ron: So, you're Hermione Britain? It's a cute name.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: After finding out the truth, Hermione and Dean have no problem with plotting the death of the Malfoys, with aid from Dumbledore and the exiles.
  • The Mistress: Marissa Micklebrock to Cornelius Fudge.
  • The Needs of the Many: Dumbledore has this view, not it stops him from feeling guilty about loss of lives.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Luna is really eager to help murder the Malfoys after finding out they murdered her mother.
  • Occupiers Out of Our Country: Olympe Maxime boasts that French wizards will push any British invasion back, but Dumbledore wonders how many would die needlessly.
  • Official Couple: Ron/Hermione.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Lucius might be pragmatic, but he still believes that muggleborns are nothing more than mudbloods.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Draco Malfoy has been having forced sex with muggleborn witches.
  • Rouge Angles of Satin: Xenophilius Lovegood made a typo when he named the Plumed Georgian Spirit Vulture, who is actually a featherless bird. He didn't try renaming as it would hurt the bird's feelings.
  • Shameful Strip: Draco's negligence in re-robing female Wands he magically stripped during his dalliances with them led to the female Wands assigned to Draco keeping extra robes to use as spare clothing.
  • Slut-Shaming: Narcissa to Muggle-born witches, regarding their sexual relationship with Draco.
  • Snake People: Naga apparently exist in the Potterverse, which is why Luna and her father have no problem in assuming that Voldemort is half-naga.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Lucius Malfoy, at least in Britain.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Hermione suffers from this a lot — first when she unveils The Conspiracy, second when Ron tells her the truth, third when she finds out that Voldemort's alive and that the Boy Who Lived was real. It all happened in the same chapter.
  • War Refugees: The Death Eater victory in the First Wizarding War caused a lot of these, mostly to France.
  • Wizarding School: Hogwarts, which is under Death Eater control, and Beauxbatons, where Harry and the Weasleys study magic after their exile from Wizarding Britain.
  • Woman Scorned: Averted. While Hermione is distraught at finding out 'Antoine' had been lying to her, she does not seek vengeance as she already learned the truth about the Ministry.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: How Lucius takes over the Ministry — by deceiving everyone into thinking that Voldemort didn't die.
