That Which Makes Up the Land is a Crossover between Avatar: The Last Airbender and Hetalia: Axis Powers by TimeTraverser

A Fan Work about America and Canada getting Trapped in Another World and trying to find a way home. Along the way, they get separated and now have to deal with their new found elemental powers while trying to find each other again.

Neither America or Canada know exactly how or why they got here, but here they are. They'd LIKE to get home...but they don't know how, quite yet. Until they have more information, they'll just have to help their newfound companions survive this war-torn world.

Is currently rewritten there.

That Which Makes Up the Land provides examples of:

  • Ambiguously Brown: The Asian-typed natives' reaction to the blond, pale-skinned Canada and America is sheer confusion, since they have no familiarity whatsoever with the Caucasian phenotype.
  • Ambiguous Situation: The possible existence of Nations-tans in the Avatarverse. Iroh doesn't seem familiar with the concept, in spite of being well-traveled and used to spirits, but Wan Shi Tong identifies Canada on sight and apparently doesn't remember "his kind" fondly.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Katara is incredulous when Wan Shi Tong describes Canada and "his kind" as violent and brutish, pointing how passive the blond is. Sokka argues there's a concussed human trafficker disagreeing with her — and Canada later proceeds to punch the owl spirit himself.
  • Blessed with Suck: How does Canada learn he's a waterbender? While he and the Gaang are stranded in the Si Wong Desert, and facing dehydratation — and a bender needs more of their element, but good luck to find water in a desert...
  • Culture Clash: America cheerfully informs Iroh that his people enjoy their tea iced and very sweet, to the old man's horror.
  • Elemental Personalities:
    • Canada tends to be rather mellow and easily rolls with his new circumstances without nary a complaint, so he turns to be a waterbender, the element of adaptation.
    • Zuko is a mite surprised by America unlocking firebending, but as explained by Iroh, the blond is a very passionate person, who tackles life impulsively and straightforwardly.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: When introduced to Canada, Professor Zei remembers the existence of small isolated communities in the mountains and suggests the strange teenager with his weird language and weird appearance might originate from there.
  • Fantastic Racism: Wan Shi Tong is emphatically unhappy about having Canada in his library, claiming "his kind" always brings violence and upheavals, slaughtering their own family to survive.
  • Gorgeous Gaijin: A lowlife at Misty Palms Oasis comments on Canada being pretty and mentions some people would pay a lot for him as he strokes the Nation's blond hair. He doesn't get very far, courtesy of Canada punching him flat. Ty Lee also calls him cute as they fight.
  • Language Barrier: Canada has this problem when he first meets the Gaang, but thankfully due to being a nation he's a fast learner and manages to pick up phrases easily. Averted in America's case when trying to talk to Iroh and Zuko. At first it looked like he'd have the same problem as his brother in the language department, until he tried Japanese — coincidentally being the same as High Court which is used in the Fire Nation.
  • Noodle Incident: Wan Shi Tong almost throws Canada out of his library on the spot, as he remembers far too well what happened the last time he allowed a Nation in.
  • Obfuscating Disability: Since America isn't fluent in the Avatarverse's languages except for High Court — which is spoken by Fire Nation nobility so not a good idea to use it when impersonating a refugee in the Earth Kingdom — Iroh and Zuko decide to claim he's partially deaf and a selective mute to explain his slurred speech and stunted understanding of what people are saying around him.
  • Power Incontinence: America's firebending first manifests as he produces sparks when fighting, then he starts suffering hot flashes in his sleep. Iroh's attempt to make him heat tea causes the cup to explode, which alarms Jet.
  • Prone to Sunburn: Canada in the desert? Very bad idea. He will peel a lot, leading him to grouse it's unfair when his brother can spend all day outside and only catch a tan while he's reduced to long sleeves and hoods.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Canada is sweet and self-effacing, and he starts to develop waterbending as he join the Gaang. America is boisterous and energetic, and is taught firebending as he's traveling with Iroh and Zuko.
  • Skewed Priorities: Canada's opinion of Aang shunning Toph for Appa's abduction instead of getting upset over Professor Zei being buried alive with Wan Shi Tong's library.
  • Trapped in Another World: The North American siblings. They're not happy about that, with America fretting about his job and Canada wondering where he disappeared, and Canada trying to ask Wan Shi Tong for a way to come home.
