Fanfic / Super Sentai Alternate

Go To

A series created by mtnetsurfer, crossing over Super Sentai with various other mediums, typically anime. The overarching story is that each Super Sentai is looking for a shard of a mystical object called the Grand Crystal. While each evil force in turn thinks they have it, in truth each only has a single shard. It's said whoever holds the entire crystal is allowed to determine the world's fate, so naturally the heroes aren't about to let it fall into evil hands.

So far three series have been completed, with a fourth being worked on.

List of works in this series:

Super Sentai Alternates contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Several examples throughout the series:
    • Yugi Muto normally isn't that strong or tough (he comes from an anime about a children's card game, after all, and even then he didn't come into his own until the last few episodes). Here he's leading the Gorengers as Akarenger.
    • Ryota Suzui was pretty much a doormat in his home series, but here he's suave, charismatic, and powerful as Big One.
    • Rock Okajima started out pretty wimpy, and even as Roranapour changed him he still stayed a Non-Action Guy. Here he's the powerful Battle Japan.
    • The entire Denzimen team consists of characters that in their home series were only kids who left all the fighting to their NetNavis. Here they're the main heroes fighting on their own.
  • Alternate Continuity: Present in the crossover between Gorenger and JAKQ. In canon the four evil armies Iron Claw sides with were taken out by Kamen Rider V3, Kamen Rider Amazon, Android Kikaider, and the Gorengers. In the story the Gorengers took out all four, during the time when JAKQ was dealing with CRIME.
  • Adaptation Expansion: While we still don't see how the Gorengers get their powers, Yugi casually notes they were gained through a successful super soldier serum. They also possess an actual Transformation Trinket in the form of the Ranger Buckles.
    • A minor case, but each story gets its own version of the Super Sentai handoff that started with Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger.
    • The Denzimen gain new, personalized weapons based on their canon NetNavis.
  • Adaptational Heroism: The four initial JAKQs. In Kakegurui the girls are largely hedonistic, manipulative, and sometimes worse. In the story they are Anti-Heroes, still enjoying the thrill of gambling but also legitimately working to save the world.
    • Most of the team that makes up Battle Fever counts. Pip Bernadotte was the only one who came close to being a hero (and even then he was a mercenary) while the others were criminals. Here they're all genuine heroes.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: In canon the Morphin Grid is powered purely by the fight between good and evil, shutting down if either is ever completely wiped out (like what happens at the end of Power Rangers in Space). Here the Morphin Grid grows in strength whenever the Super Sentai introduce justice to the world, usually in the form of defeating evil monsters.
  • Alternate Continuity: Some minor cases crop up here and there, though one that stands out; In canon Umitsular was able to sneak some of his jellyfish onto Denzi Land as it fled Planet Denzi, causing the deaths of all the refugees as they fled the destruction of their planet. Here he didn't get the chance, and the remaining Denzians (save for Princess Denzi and her entourage, who weren't even on the planet at the time) successfully reach Earth and start mingling with the native humans. It's noted that most of Japan has Denzian genetics as a result.
  • Alternate History: The arrival of the Black Cross Army actually stopped the Cold War in 1975, rather than 1991.
    • Also implied with the end of Battle Fever, where the destruction of Egos prevents all future wars, meaning any wars that happened in our reality between 1980 and the modern day never occur in this fanfic.
    • An in-universe one occurs in Denziman when Yai is briefly flung forward to an alternate 1985 where Vader actually succeeded in one of their plans. When she returns to 1980 she and the other Denzimen are able to prevent this future from occuring.
  • Ancient Astronauts: While it is confirmed that Earth was visited by aliens, it's only speculated how they could have affected the planet. The only thing that's known for sure is that the Denzians of Planet Denzi fled their destroyed homeworld and eventually settled on Earth, intermingling with the humans peacefully once they arrived.
  • Applied Phlebotinum: Most of the Sentai's gear is powered by Sakuradite. Yes, THAT Sakuradite.
  • Age Lift: Most of the characters are made older than canon. Especially noticable with Denziman, since the main heroes of Mega Man Battle Network are only 10 to 12 years old canonically.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Each team gets their own transformation call:
    • Gorengers: "Go!"
    • JAKQ: "Energy Charge!"
    • Battle Fever: "Fever!"
    • Denziman: "Denzi Spark!"
  • Call-Forward: When Temujin retrieves the Atlantis airship, one of the Zolders spots a symbol for something called "Death Dark".
  • The Cameo: The canon Super Sentai will show up once per story:
    • The original Gorengers are acting as a reserve team to the ones in the story. Daigoro Kumano also appears as a recruit being trained by Jotaro.
    • During a supercar race, Yumeko drives past the canon JAKQ team, who all comment on her in some fashion.
    • Diane Martin shows up as Eda's adopted sister during one chapter (ironically, one adopting the episode in which she left the show). Kensaku Shiraishi shows up during an incident involving a gold transport. And the canon Battle Fever (the final version of it) all wind up as the assistants of a scientist creating a drill missile.
    • The canon Denziman team are briefly mentioned as having hired Lan and his friends to the athletics club that serves as the Denzimen's hangout.
  • Cool Airship: At the end of the first story EAGLE successfully builds the Gorenger Fortress, largely designed to hold the shards of the Grand Crystal that are retrieved.
  • Foreshadowing: Battle Fever, and the Super Sentai in general, are aware early on of several planets documented by both the Black Cross Army and CRIME, including Gaia, Arcadia, and Remnant.
  • Gender Flip: While these are obviously not the same characters from Super Sentai canon, this trope can happen by default by virtue of the crossover characters acting as this story's version of the Super Sentai. Specific examples include the four main JAKQs (all of whom are women when in canon three were men), as well as Battle Cossack/Balalaika and DenziGreen/Yai, both of whom are women while their canon counterparts are men.
  • Like Reality, Unless Noted:
    • Other than Sentai World's obvious superhero shenanigans, the history of the world seems identical to reality as we know it (as indicated on the timeline page). That is until it's revealed that Sakuradite, a mineral that doesn't exist in our world, exists on multiple planets in Sentai World, including Earth.
    • Likewise, it's noted early on that Earth was once inhabited by a so-called "super race", which eventually split off in evolution between humans and merfolk.
  • Mythology Gag: General Tetsuzan notes that Battle Fever Robo was inspired by Leopardon of the Spider-Man tokusatsu, which is exactly what happened during the actual production of Battle Fever J.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Battle Fever's weapons weren't really named in canon. Here they're given names based on the countries each member is from:
    • Rising Sun Spear (A reference to how Japan is known as the "Land of the Rising Sun".)
    • Hammer Sickle Sai (A reference to the hammer and sickle shown on the Soviet flag.)
    • Liberte Rapier (A reference to France's motto "Liberte, egalite, fraternite".)
    • Harambee Whip (A reference to Kenya's motto "Harambee".)
    • Star-Spangled Daggers (A reference to the name of the USA's national flag, the Star-Spangled Banner).
  • Right Makes Might: The Morphin Grid/Bio-Field that powers the Super Sentai can be made stronger by the Sentai introducing justice to the world, whether by helping others, enforcing reasonable laws, teaching children the right way to live, or just the good old fashioned method of destroying evil monsters. This lets the Sentai keep up with the Sorting Algorithm of Evil as monsters keep growing stronger trying to out-muscle them in the event their schemes fail.
  • Shout-Out: Several to Power Rangers, the American adaptation of Super Sentai:
    • Each team mentor, during the team's first outing, tells the team, "May the Power protect you!"
    • During the first two series the energy source of the Super Sentai is referred as the Bio-Field, which was mentioned in Power Rangers RPM. During the Gorenger/JAKQ crossover, the name is switched to the Morphin Grid.
    • Starting in Battle Fever, the red warrior will often call out "It's Morphin time!" for the team transformation.
    • Each team at the end of their story calls out, "Long live the Power!"
  • Transformation Trinket: Naturally.
    • The Gorengers have the Ranger Buckles.
    • The JAKQs have the Powered Capsules.
    • The Battle Fevers have the Battleceivers.
    • The Denzimen have the Denzi Rings.
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: Enforced. While it's noted that each Sentai is still active after their story ends, they focus more on street-level crime or smaller evil organizations and leave the major threat for the newer, more specialized Sentai team to deal with unless the situation gets dire enough.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Discussed and Invoked. During one roll call from the Gorengers, a Zolder wonders why they don't try attacking during that time. Another points out the Gorengers would just beat the snot out of them while doing the roll call, so there's no point.
  • Together We Are X: Based on the original Trope Codifier itself. In fact, it serves as a plot point, as the narration implies the Sentai's roll call actually unites a single Sentai team's powers and amplifies them for battle.
  • We Cannot Go On Without You: A rare villainous version. Often a scheme of the evil forces requires the Monster of the Week's special powers, so for the Sentai just destroying said monster is enough to shut the scheme down permanently.
