Strange Vistors from Another Century
(AO3 Link) is a Harry Potter Fan Fic by Izzyaro. The original story was a standard 'reading the books' fic, with the Founders of Hogwarts and the Golden Trio, but was taken down during FanFiction.Net's infamous MST purge back in 2011/2012. Subsequently, the author reworked it into this story: a straightforward Time Travel fic, where the Golden Trio meet and become students of the Founders of Hogwarts while searching for a way to go back to their original time.
Official Summary: The destruction of the time turners in the Department of Mysteries throws Harry, Ron and Hermione a thousand years into the past. There they meet the Founders of Hogwarts, who are not at all pleased about what has happened to their school.
Tropes:
- Deliberate Values Dissonance: Everywhere. Society has changed a lot in the last thousand years, as the trio come to realize, and there are several misunderstandings at first between them and the Founders due to this.
- Historical Villain Upgrade: Salazar Slytherin. While he does hate muggles and is suspicious of muggle-borns, both attitudes are justified due to past experiences and
the differing social climate. However, he is nowhere even close to the pureblood supremacist the history books have painted him as. As they get to know him better, the trio become more and more aghast and angered at how badly his reputation has been twisted and tarnished over the last ten centuries. - Honorary Uncle: Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Gryffindor are this to Helena Ravenclaw.
- Living Emotional Crutch: Interactions with the Founders allow Ron to realize this is the role he plays for his friends, and one they desperately need. The world leans on Harry and Hermione, while Harry and Hermione lean on him.
- Luke, I Am Your Father: A rare mutual case, as Harry and Salazar Slytherin learn late in the story that Harry's gift for Parseltongue is genetic, and thus Harry is a descendant of the Slytherin family on his mother's side, through a distant Squib ancestor. Having had time to get to know each other, both parties are delighted by this discovery and subsequently adopt each other wholeheartedly as family.
- Seers: For all her similarities with Hermione, Rowena Ravenclaw is one, and thus is fully versed in Divination. That being said, it's because she's a Seer that she knows it's impossible to teach unless you were born with the talent, which is why she's unhappy there's a class being taught at Hogwarts in the future, as according to her, more than one Seer being born to a single generation is exceedingly rare.
- True Companions: The Hogwarts founders are very close and consider themselves family.
- Unlocking the Talent: During their first lessons with Hufflepuff, the trio learn that Ron has a gift for healing. Suitably enthused at being better than Harry and Hermione at something for once, it isn't long before he becomes her top student.
- Young Future Famous People:
- Among some of the first people the trio meet outside of the Founders are Helena Ravenclaw and her suitor Edmund. Though the trio don't know it yet, readers who have read Deathly Hallows will recognize them as the Grey Lady and the Bloody Baron, the ghosts of Ravenclaw and Slytherin, respectively.
- In the latter half of the story, they meet one of the Founders' former students: Myrddin. The trio, of course, recognize him as Merlin, the greatest wizard of all time.
