Tropes found in Star Trek Genesis include:
- Adapted Out: Balok was the only seen representative of the First Federation in the prime timeline, but he isn't in the fanfic at all. However, his ship, the Fesarius, is alluded to by "fesarius" being a First Federation starship class.
- Adaptational Villainy: The First Federation's appearance in "The Corbomite Maneuver" ended with Kirk making peace with Balok. The First Federation of this fanfic is unambiguously evil.
- Apocalypse How: Played with Class X Doppelganger was constructed from a pre-existing planet with its own civilization, which would effectively be the destruction of the previous planet.
- Ascended Extra: The First Federation was only name-dropped by Balok in the prime continuity. This fanfic gives us some details about it.
- Continuity Nod: this fanfic is the alternate reality version of the TOS episode "Miri" with the First Federation from the episode "The Corbomite Maneuver" thrown in.
- Kirk meets some Cardassians, who debuted in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
- External Retcon: this fanfic implies the reasons for the existence of the "Miri" planet in the prime timeline.
- Human Aliens: or rather, aliens transformed into humans .
- The Federation: subverted with the organization calling itself "First Federation". it is far less benevolent than the Federation we are familiar with, and is willing to transform a planet and its people against their will even if it kills most of the population.
- The Stinger: the last chapter shows the Enterprise heading to the fourth planet in the Talos system.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: massively subverted, as the Doppelganger's similarity with Earth is the main plot point.
