"Glad to meet you Hata no Kokoro. My name is Tenshi Hinawani, and do I have a proposition for you!"

From the writer of Clash of the Elements comes a new story on a very eastern land.

Not long after the events of the 13.5 entry in the Touhou Project series, Hopeless Masquerade, things are seeming returning to normal for everyone.
That is until Tenshi Hinawani returns to Gensokyo, looking to get some new kicks out of her Gensokyo's residents and cure her endless boredom.

Her search leads her to Gensokyo's newest Naïve Newcomer Hata no Kokoro, a youkai with the power to manipulate emotion.

Seeing the countless possibilities for mischief through the young Kokoro, Tenshi convinces Kokoro to team up with her to "help" the residents of Gensokyo by unlocking their "true emotions". For their sake, of course.

With a gullible, naïve girl as her tool for more fun, Tenshi sets out to cause a new incident even more amusing then the last one...

Scarlet Masquerade contains examples of...

  • Badass Boast:
Patchouli: "Now I shall do what Shinigamis, shrine maidens, and other weaker magicians have failed to do and send you to the place of your final judgment, Celestial. Run, Tenshi Hinanawi, even though you shall not escape my domain alive..."
  • Berserk Button: Tenshi inadvertently pressed Mokou's button by having Kokoro change Keine's emotions in Chapter 2.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Quite frequently, even to the point where Suika steals the script to the story
Suika: "Beats me...I just remember one day trying to break the fourth wall with my strength on a whim and happened to grab a script for this story..." "...Either way, just forget I said anything in this last paragraph, otherwise this story will get way too meta for its own good.".
  • Break the Cutie: Kokoro, after learning of Tenshi true intention. Her fox mask even shatters because of it.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Patchouli turns Tenshi into a normal human in order to defeat her.
  • Butt-Monkey: Despite having little to do with the plot, Cirno has already warranted this status thanks to being the victim of an accidental hit-and-run maneuver by Marisa.
  • Call-Forward: Marisa mentions twice during the course of the story about her plans to make a flamethrower, which coincides with one of her new bombs in Touhou 14. Likewise, Wakasagihime from that very game makes a brief unnamed cameo in Chapter 8 and in the Epilogue, where she finds out about the author's rather interesting opinion on her thanks to Suika's earlier fourth wall breaking moment
  • The Cameo: Daiyousei, Alice, and Kosuzu have brief dialogue-less appearances in Chapter 8.
  • Con Woman: How Tenshi ropes Kokoro into going along with her plan
  • Curbstomp Battle: Mokou vs. Tenshi, with Tenshi obviously being the one giving the stomp.
  • Emotion Bomb: The MO of this story's incident causers
  • Enemy Mine: Miko and Byakuren team-up yet again to deal with Kokoro
  • Getting Smilies Painted on Your Soul: Kokoro's power is capable of this, as Remilia and Sakuya discovered.
  • Improbably Female Cast: Lampshaded in Chapter 6:
Tenshi: Then lets go find the river itself and hope we can find her.
Kokoro: Why do you keep using female pronouns?
Tenshi: Huh? Are you seriously asking me that? You mean to tell me that you haven't noticed how every single important person in Gensokyo is a female?
  • Oh, Crap!: Tenshi's reaction to encountering Yuuka, realizing that 1) This is who Kokoro warned her about, 2) She is far stronger then Tenshi and she doesn't stand a chance, and 3) she just smashed her Berserk Button by cutting down her sunflowers.
  • Rage Against the Author: Cirno attempts this in the epilogue.
  • Sequel Hook: A few of them, actually. Byakuren and Miko have taken up the role of Kokoro's mother and father respectively, Remilia is looking to acquire Kokoro to help Flandre out, and Yukari has forewarned Mamizou of two dangerous individuals that will come to Gensokyo in due time.
  • Shout-Out: In Chapter 9 Yukari pulls out the Tales of the Abyss variation of Indignation against Tenshi.
    • Tenshi's Last Word is named after one of the most popular remixes of her theme from SOUND HOLIC. Likewise, the Next Time segment of the very first chapter references the Touhou doujin band Draw the Emotional.
  • Spannerinthe Works: If it wasn't for Kokoro's unexpected appearance in the library, Patchouli would have very likely killed Tenshi.
    • Likewise, Tenshi's plan to keep Kokoro on her side once Byakuren, Miko, Reimu and Marisa arrive to stop them is foiled by Miko's ability to discern Tenshi's true motives.
  • Tranquil Fury: How Yuuka handles Tenshi cutting down her sunflowers.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Kokoro doesn't take well knowing Tenshi was using her.
  • Villain Protagonist: Tenshi's overall role in this story.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Both Tenshi and Kokoro have moments like this, when they confront each other.
