Sacrifice provides examples of:

  • Beware the Mind Reader: Rockwell ends up outing that Donnie's attraction to April is, on some level, reciprocated.
  • Bird People:
    • Carlos Chiang O'Brien Gambe seems to have been turned into a mutant-cockatoo when the Megarift occured.
    • According to Casey, the Purple Dragons were all turned into mutant-chickens.
    • Esther, or "Ace" as Leo comes to call her, was mutated into a mutant-duck.
  • Botanical Abomination: While escorting Donnie and April to the EPF's headquarters, they are nearly killed by a monstrous creature that could only be described as being part tree, part t-rex. Mikey later names it "the Tree-Rex."
Donnie (quoting Mikey): ...'cause it was a tree and nearly wrecked us.'
  • Differently Powered Individuals: With mutants making up at least 1/8th of New York's population, various terms are thrown in (but as of yet remain unofficial) when it comes to mutants.
    • Donatello briefly calls the new mutant population "Mutant-Americans" when April acknowledges this population boom.
    • When Raphael addresses the crowd of mutants, he uses "mutanimals" for animal-based mutants, "mu-plants" for plant-based mutants, and "muchanicals" for machine-based mutants.
  • Friendly Enemy: Both Spider Bytez and Shredder's mutants (without him knowing about it) end up agreeing to a ceasefire with the Turtles on the condition that they are put on the VIP list for when TCRI begins distributing retromutagen.
  • Instant Sedation: Shasta's pollen has a soporific effects, inducing a relaxed state on anyone who breathes it in, and can even knock them out when exposed to enough of it.
  • Internal Reveal: With how widespread and unavoidable the mutations become, the Hamato Clan out themselves to New York, Michelangelo explaining to New York via Channel 6 how to avoid Dimension X's hazards and informing the populace that a retromutagen does in-fact exist.
  • MacGuffin Super-Person: Much like how the Kraang needed April's DNA to perfect the mutagen, April becomes a priority asset to the Earth Protection Force — her blood is a key ingredient in creating retromutagen to cure the new mutants and her Psychic Powers induce a Restoration of Sanity on the mutants who's sudden mutations made them savage and distressed. While not a prisoner, she is held up at Earth Protection Force's facility for her own protection.
  • Mass Super-Empowering Event: The Megarift Disaster is an incident wherein a rift from Dimension X opens above New York, spilling a portion of Dimension X's contents into the City, including a massive amount of mutagen. This results in an estimated 1.2 million mutants now inhabiting New York.
  • Mythology Gag: The Megarift Disaster is superficially similar to the Mutagen Bomb that goes off in the IDW comic series; a Mass Super-Empowering Event that creates a boom in New York's Mutant population, making knowledge of their existence unavoidable and forcing humanity to adjust to this new reality.
  • Plagiarism in Fiction: Averted. When questioned why Rockwell would willingly work under Donnie, Rockwell assures him that he doesn't intend on using his Telepathy to steal the retromutagen formula and take credit for it, citing that while he's smug, he isn't that kind of monkey, and that things are too dire to be thinking about such things.
  • Plant Person: Shasta was just a Queens-born, middle-aged woman before she was turned into a daisy-mutant, having been found alone in an abandoned part of the city by Raphael and Casey.
  • Power Incontinence: Isaiah was a regular kid who, after being hit with mutagen, developed Telepathic and Telekinetic powers. Due to his age and the traumatic nature of his mutation, he is stuck Hearing Voices and is kept away from the rest of the mutants kept in containment because of it. Donnie being near him nearly drives him crazy due to the many thoughts bombarding him, creating a telekinetic whirlwind of objects trying to keep him away.
April: He can hear every thought of every person and every mutant in this place. Mostly it's just jumbled noise, but it's so loud to him that he can't stand it... plus he's got other powers that he can't understand and can't control, like the telekinesis.
  • Reluctant Ruler: In his efforts to prevent a needless war between humanity and a colony of mutants who had only just recently developed sapience, Raphael ends up becoming their leader, taking on the title of "El Jéfe." Having already experienced what it was like to be a leader and not liking it, Raphael instantly regrets it.
  • Samurai Shinobi: Despite being a ninja, Leonardo tells Ace that he follows Bushido.
  • The Unmasqued World: While canon established a Broken Masquerade when the Kraang first invaded New York, here the megarift disaster resulted in a new generation of mutants with a population so large that they cannot go ignored by New York's human population. This, combined with the Earth Protection Force's experience and resources in managing such events, led to an uneasy cohabitation with humans and mutant, allowing the Hamato Clan a chance to live out in the open without most of the fears their mutated physiologies gave them.
    Donnie: It's... so weird...
    April: What?
Donnie: No one runs and screams when they see me... There's so many mutants in the public eye of the city, no one even reacts to one more...
  • The Worm That Walks: Hive Mind is a sentient colony of mutant-wasps that had joined the underground colony of mutants after the Megarift Disaster.
  • Younger Mentor, Older Disciple: Rockwell agrees to work as Donnie's assistant in mass-producing retromutagen. Justified, since it's Donnie's retromutagen formula.
