Fanfic / Rhapsody in Blue

Go To

Rhapsody in Blue is a fic by KCKenobi. It follows Obi-Wan Kenobi, in this continuity the principal cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Soon after his conductor, Valorum, is arrested mid-concert, he receives a threatening note, and before too long finds himself dragged into investigating what happens. It is not to be confused with the Gershwin piece or the Gershwin biopic of the same name.

Rhapsody in Blue features the following tropes:

  • The Alcoholic: Qui-Gon, according to flashbacks.
  • Alternate Universe: Events which loosely follow canon are transplanted to modern-day Philadelphia and drama around an orchestra.
  • Anchored Ship: Obi-Wan and Satine, who are both too ambitious to give up their dreams to be together.
  • Author Appeal: The musical parts. KCKenobi, based on her comments, is a musician.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Turns out Bail Organa is a lot more important to the plot than it initially appears; he's an undercover cop investigating the embezzlement case around the orchestra.
  • Death by Falling Over: Palpatine's fate at the fic's climax, assisted by a Staircase Tumble.
  • Hope Spot: When Obi-Wan was fifteen, Qui-Gon finally got a job at the Philadelphia Orchestra. The two suddenly had a lot more money and Qui-Gon had stopped drinking...and then, a few months afterwards, Qui-Gon died.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Qui-Gon's death was made to look like a car accident. Didn't hurt that a) he was drunk at the time and b) a fifteen-year-old with no driving experience was at the wheel.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: Cody is one of nine siblings, though one has died.
  • Maybe Ever After: Obi-Wan and Cody. While their first date goes fairly badly, the door is left open to the two of them getting together some day.
  • Posthumous Character: Qui-Gon, Shmi, and Fives, who have all died prior to the main story.
  • Talking to the Dead: Obi-Wan does this a lot, visiting Qui-Gon's grave fairly regularly to update him on his life.
  • Titled After the Song: After Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Many of the chapter titles are titled after music.
  • Transplanted Character Fic: From the Star Wars Universe to modern-day Philadelphia, centering around the Philadelphia Orchestra.
  • Uptown Girl: Satine and Obi-Wan's romance, where he grew up very poor and spent time in the foster system while she was from a rich family. It didn't last.
  • You Are Not Alone: The main theme of the song Anakin builds, directed towards Obi-Wan.
