Renegade Cause
is a For Want Of A Nail Fanfic of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in which the Ministry acts faster than the Order when Harry is expelled from Hogwarts.
This Work Has the Following Tropes:
- Arrested for Heroism: Takes a far darker turn, as the Ministry sends Aurors to snap Harry's wand immediately, triggering the events of the story.
- Blackmail: Harry does this to Scrimgeour.
- By-the-Book Cop: Kingsley Shacklebolt, though he veers towards Inspector Javert. He thinks no-one should be above the law but that the law should not be implemented blindly.
- Deconstruction Fic: Of the
Fandom-Specific Plot of Harry being accused of a crime and the Ministry trying to throw him into Azkaban, but without Ron the Death Eater. - The Dog Bites Back: Fleur went to work for Gringotts but because the goblins are prejudiced against Veela, she's stuck watching over the archives. She pays them back by helping Harry getting the financial documents he needs to blackmail Scrimgeour.
- Doorstopper: The fic is half a million words long.
- For Want Of A Nail: Unlike canon, Ministry seeks to enact Harry's expulsion from Hogwarts, with Aurors sent to Privet Drive immediately to snap Harry's wand.
- I Did What I Had to Do: Deconstructed. Harry and Sirius think this is the case but some of the Order believe that Harry stepped out of line and should be held accountable for his actions.
- Interservice Rivalry: Between the Aurors and the rest of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
- It's All About Me: Harry has a very callous attitude to people who might stand in his way, such as wanting Shacklebolt getting in trouble just because he was rude to him, something that shocks the people closest to him.
- Official Couple: Harry/Tonks and Daphne/Tracey.
- Short-Lived Aerial Escape: Harry flees the Aurors on his Firebolt broom but is quickly tracked by other Aurors. Then he faces an airplane and nearly falls to his death.
- Shut Up, Hannibal!: Harry's anger early in the story drives to practically tell Professor Snape to shut up, something he would have never done otherwise.
- Recoil Boost: While fleeing the Aurors, Harry comes face to face with an airplane. He tries to fly close to it for cover, but the energy waves cause him to fall off the broom. A quick Accio however brings the broom back to him.
