    Tropes # to E
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: After the villains kill Jermaine in "Battle of Royals," Ariel's grief and rage over losing one of her best friends causes her to achieve a Super Mode.
  • Adaptational Badass: Two cases in "Battle of Royals."
    • Rapunzel gains Hand Blast abilities as part of her Sun Drop powers.
    • Ariel gains a Super Mode complete with glowing eyes and a vortex of ocean water encircling her.
  • Alone Among the Couples: Jermaine feels and is this way around most of the princesses throughout the chapter of the same name.
  • Anger Born of Worry: In "Precocious Crush," Ariel, Flounder, and Jermaine are attacked by Glut the Shark while exploring a sunken ship. Jermaine puts himself between Glut and his friends before twice punching Glut on the snout to get him to back off. Afterwards, she bear hugs Jermaine before berating him for being so reckless.
  • Berserker Tears: Ariel is crying throughout her Super Mode in "Battle of Royals," as it's fueled by her grief at watching the villains kill Jermaine.
  • Best Friend: Jermaine and the princesses, especially Ariel, are this to each other.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Maleficent, Ursula, Jafar, Hades, and Doctor Facilier team up to attack Princess Academy in "Battle of Royals."
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • As mentioned above, Glut the Shark returns at the beginning of "Precocious Crush."
    • About halfway through "Tangled in Knots," Cassandra returns to Corona for a day.
  • Bungled Suicide: Jermaine slits his wrists with an X-acto knife and jumps from the top of Princess Academy near the end of "Friends in Need." Thankfully, Ariel and Tiana find him and take him to a hospital before he dies from his self-inflicted injuries.
  • Bully Hunter: Ariel takes up this role for Jermaine in the standalone chapter of the same name. She also helps him learn to stand up to said bullies.
  • The Chanteuse: In "Mermaid Melody," Ariel sings at a night club called Enchantment Under the Sea. However, it's downplayed as while she certainly gets dolled up for her performance, the songs she sings are ones from across her franchise and thus not sultry in any way.
  • Christmas Episode: The endings of "Precocious Crush," "Food for Thought, "Tangled in Knots," and "Mermaid Melody" take place during the Christmas season.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In "Battle of Royals," Ariel delivers one to the villains after activating her Super Mode.
  • Darker and Edgier: Most of the fanfic is as lighthearted as the franchise it's based on. However, two chapters delve into much darker and more serious issues than the rest.
    • "Friends in Need" deals with Jermaine's depression, suicide attempt, and subsequent hospitalization.
    • "Battle of Royals" has some of the Disney Villains team up to attack Princess Academy and later kill Jermaine in a fairly brutal way.
  • Disney Death: In "Battle of Royals," the villains combine their magic into one huge blast and kill Jermaine with it, his soul being forced out of his body in the process. After Ariel activates her Super Mode, the shockwaves sent out from it restore him to life.
  • Driven to Suicide: Jermaine deals with suicidal thoughts. He later acts on them at the end of "Friends in Need" by slitting his wrists with an X-acto knife and jumping from the top of Princess Academy. Thankfully, Ariel and Tiana find him and take him to a hospital before he succumbs to his self-inflicted injuries.
  • Eye Color Change: Ariel's sclerae turn completely yellow as she activates her Super Mode in "Battle of Royals."

    Tropes F to K
  • Forced to Watch: In "Battle of Royals," the princesses are forced to watch the villains kill Jermaine.
  • Futile Hand Reach: Done thrice, with Jermaine on the receiving end all three times.
    • In "Precocious Crush," Ariel reaches her hand out towards him while saying his name when it looks like he's about to be killed and eaten by Glut the Shark.
    • In "Battle of Royals," Ariel does this again when Ursula has him in her grasp. Melody and Rapunzel do this after he was killed by Ursula and the other villains.
  • Girls Love Chocolate: In "Alone Among the Couples," the princesses gorge on Valentine's Day chocolates.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Ariel gains these as part of her Super Mode in "Battle of Royals."
  • Heroic BSoD: After Jermaine is killed by the villains in "Battle of Royals," Ariel completely loses it. Tears fall down her face as she has memories of him flash through her head. This gives her a Super Mode, which she uses to beat the crap out of the aforementioned villains.
  • Honesty Aesop: At the end of "Alone Among the Couples," Ariel tells Jermaine honesty is an important part of friendship and that he was very honest with her after he finally admits to having a childhood crush on her. He agrees before going on to say honesty is an important part of any relationship.
  • Ice Crystals: In "Friends in Need," Elsa creates an ice crystal for Jermaine as thanks for their friendship.
  • I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: At the end of "Alone Among the Couples," Jermaine tells Ariel this was one of the main reasons he never confessed his feelings to her. She then tells him he could never ruin their friendship and was glad he finally told her how he felt.
  • Insecure Love Interest: In "Alone Among the Couples," Jermaine tells some of the other princesses he never told Ariel how he felt about her because he considered himself out of her league due to her being both older than him and a princess.
  • Ironic Echo: In "Precocious Crush," King Triton repeats some...familiar words when talking to Jermaine about the merboy's childhood crush on Ariel and his conflicted feelings about going up to the surface to visit her. Jermaine's responses also sound familiar to earlier dialogue:
King Triton: I also know you've been keeping something from me.
    Jermaine: Keeping...something?
    King Triton: About Ariel?
    [later on in the conversation]
Jermaine: It wouldn't be the same.
King Triton: Because she's a human and you're a merman?
  • Kick the Dog: In "Battle of Royals," Ursula threatens to kill Jermaine unless the princesses surrender. She and the other villains then do it anyway out of spite.

    Tropes L to R
  • Likes Older Men: Discussed between Jermaine and some of the princesses in "Alone Among the Couples." One of the reasons Jermaine thought Ariel was "out of his league" is because she's older than him (only by a mere four years, though). His family always told him older women prefer to be with older men. Elsa tells him that's true for some women but not all women.
  • Likes Older Women: Implied with Jermaine. He had a childhood crush on Ariel, who's four years his senior.
  • Making a Splash: Ariel, in two consecutive chapters.
    • In "Bully Hunter," Ariel summons a spiraling stream of water to wash away one of Jermaine's bullies.
    • In "Battle of Royals," Ariel sends a massive wave of water crashing down on the villains after entering her Super Mode.
  • Manly Tears: Jermaine cries twice during the story.
    • At the end of "Precocious Crush," he cries after Ariel gives him a magic locket that displays images of all their past adventures as a Christmas gift.
    • Near the end of "Friends in Need," he cries after all the princesses tell him they'll always be there for him following his suicide attempt and subsequent hospitalization.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • In "Precocious Crush," Ariel reaches her hand out towards Jermaine while saying "Jermaine, no!" when it looks like he's about to be killed and eaten by the Glut the Shark. She did the exact same thing with Melody in The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea right before Melody hands Morgana King Triton's trident.
    • Also in "Precocious Crush," the way Ariel saves Jermaine from drowning (pulling him up to the surface and back to shore with one arm and propelling herself with the other arm) is exactly the same as when she saved Prince Eric from drowning in her first film.
    • The title of the fifth chapter, "Tangled in Knots," shares its name with a lyric from the theme song of Tangled: The Series.
    • Ariel being magically summoned to help Jermaine with bullies in "Bully Hunter" is similar to how she and other Disney Princesses would be magically summoned to help the eponymous character of Sofia the First.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: The villains spitefully killing Jermaine just to hurt the princesses in "Battle of Royals" allows Ariel to unlock her Super Mode and send the villains packing.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: At the end of "Alone Among the Couples," Melody tells her parents about Jermaine's childhood crush on Ariel. After that, the three walk up to Jermaine. His first response is to grin without meaning to.
  • One-Gender School: As indicated by its name, Princess Academy only allows girls and women to be students there.
  • The One Guy: Jermaine plays this role in "Friends in Need," "Battle of Royals," and "Alone Among the Couples."
  • Our Souls Are Different: In "Battle of Royals," Jermaine's soul is forced out of his body when the villains combine their magic into one huge blast and kill him with it. After Ariel activates her Super Mode, the resulting shockwaves are enough to return Jermaine's soul to his body.
  • Overly-Nervous Flop Sweat: At the end of "Alone Among the Couples," Melody tells her parents about Jermaine's childhood crush on Ariel. After that, the three walk up to Jermaine. He almost immediately starts sweating profusely.
  • Platonic Valentine: In the chapter of the same name, Jermaine makes these for Ariel and Tiana.
  • Power-Strain Blackout: After using her Super Mode to beat the villains in "Battle of Royals," Ariel collapses on the floor because she can't control the power and was just running on grief and rage.
  • Precocious Crush: Jermaine had one on Ariel when they were younger in the chapter of the same name.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: At the beginning of "Precocious Crush," Ariel uses these on Jermaine to persuade him to explore a sunken ship with her. It works.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After being Forced to Watch the villains kill Jermaine in "Battle of Royals," Ariel drops to her knees in tears. Then, her gaze hardens, her eyes go blue and yellow, she enters a Super Mode, and she lays the smackdown on the villains.
  • Royal School: As is to be expected by its title, Princess Academy functions as this both for girls/women who are already royalty and those who wish to be (or act like) royalty.

    Tropes S to Y
  • Sadistic Choice: Ursula threatens the princesses with this in "Battle of Royals," threatening to kill Jermaine unless they surrender. Despite them complying, she and the other villains renege on their end of the "deal" when the princesses beg them to return their best friend to them, killing Jermaine just to spite the princesses with his loss. This backfires spectacularly.
  • Say My Name: As mentioned above, this happens twice with Jermaine.
    • In "Precocious Crush," Ariel says "Jermaine, no!" while reaching her hand out towards him when it looks like he's about to be killed and eaten by Glut the Shark.
    • In "Battle of Royals," Ariel does this again when Ursula has him in her grasp. Melody and Rapunzel shout his name after he was killed by Ursula and the other villains.
  • Shout-Out: The way most of the battle between the princesses and villains in "Battle of Royals" plays out is similar to the fight between King Andrias and the Calamity Trio in the Amphibia episode "True Colors."
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Jermaine's first, last, and only crush was Ariel.
  • Snowball Fight: In "Alone Among the Couples," Jermaine and some of the princesses have an indoor snowball fight at Princess Academy thanks to Elsa's ice powers.
  • Stargazing Scene: After Jermaine reunites with Ariel on land in "Precocious Crush," they sit on the beach and look up at the stars later that night.
  • Summon to Hand: As Ariel activates her Super Mode following Jermaine's death in "Battle of Royals," her trident responds by glowing yellow and floating over to her hand.
  • Super Mode: Ariel's is activated after the villains kill Jermaine in "Battle of Royals." Her irises glow blue, her sclerae glow yellow, and a vortex of ocean water surrounds her as she returns to her mermaid form.
  • Thanksgiving Episode: In "Food for Thought," Jermaine has Thanksgiving dinner with Tiana and her loved ones.
  • Threatening Shark: As mentioned above, Glut the Shark resumes this role at the beginning of "Precocious Crush."
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: In "Battle of Royals," Ariel awakens her Super Mode mere moments after the villains kill Jermaine when her grief and rage push her over the edge.
  • Treehouse of Fun: In "Friends in Need," Jane and Jermaine build one of these with help from Tinker Bell, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather.
  • Under the Mistletoe: Done three times, all of which are rare platonic versions.
    • Ariel and Jermaine at the end of "Precocious Crush."
    • Jermaine and Tiana at the end of "Food for Thought."
    • Jermaine and Rapunzel at the end of "Tangled in Knots."
  • Unstoppable Rage: After the villains kill Jermaine in "Battle of Royals," Ariel goes completely berserk, unlocks a Super Mode, and unleashes a Curb-Stomp Battle on the villains.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: The above-mentioned "Platonic Valentines" and "Alone Among the Couples."
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: The villains teleport away after the Curb-Stomp Battle Ariel gives them.
  • Villain Team-Up: As mentioned above, Doctor Facilier, Hades, Jafar, Maleficent, and Ursula team up to attack Princess Academy.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: At the end of "Friends in Need," Melody and Rapunzel chew Jermaine out for intentionally not answering calls, Facebook messages, and texts from anybody for an entire week.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: A recurring theme in "Friends in Need."
  • You Are Not Alone: Another recurring theme in "Friends in Need."
