Poor Unfortunate Souls is a Fifty Shades of Grey Deconstruction Fic and Urban Fantasy AU. In it, Private Adept Detectives Lindsey Pilot and Aliea Veldon are hired by Katherine 'Kate' Kavanaugh to save her best friend, Anastasia 'Ana' Steele, from the clutches of her abusive boyfriend, Christian Grey. The two proceed to investigate by coming into contact with his exes and gathering all they can about his nefarious deeds.

Poor Unfortunate Souls contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Villainy: Christian Grey in canon is Ana's Love Interest, but in here, he is the Big Bad simply by portraying his abusive actions as abusive.
  • Big Bad: Christian Grey himself is Ana's abusive boyfriend who had previously ruined the lives of about a dozen girls prior, and the two detectives, Lindsey and Ailea, have the job of saving Ana and apprehending Christian.
  • Deconstruction Fic: The fic takes Christian Grey's canonical acts of Domestic Abuse that were depicted as love and examines just how horrible they really are. It also shows that Christian's exes, who in canon were 'other girls', are more his victims than anything else.
  • Domestic Abuse: What Christian does to Ana and what he did to his exes, including rape thinly disguised as BDSM and stealing from their bank accounts.
  • Financial Abuse: Christian would access the bank accounts of his exes and take all their money for himself, in addition to his physical abuse.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Even after all the evidence piles up, Ana refuses to see that her boyfriend Christian is a bad man, and accuses Lindsey and Aliea of conspiring with Leila (one of his victims) to take him down out of jealousy. Once Ana realizes that Kate called them in the first place, she cuts off all ties with her.
  • I Have Your Wife: Christian Grey agreed to give Sophie Taylor the bone marrow transplant she needed, but only if Jason Taylor became his accomplice in his various crimes.
  • Serial Rapist: Christian Grey is shown to have raped all his exes beforehand.
  • Urban Fantasy: The fantasy part deals with magic like telepathy and auras, but actually takes a back seat to the realistic drama.
