Entrapped in a snobbish boarding school, Lily Evans mischievously escapes for one night, fatefully encountering London's most eligible bachelor, Lord James Potter. Set in 1940 during the Battle of Britain. A story of love, war, magic and deception.

Petal In The Rain is a Harry Potter Alternate Universe Fic written by pratty-prongs-princesse, focusing on a World War II-era James and Lily. The entire story refurbishes Hogwarts and the magical world at large to have a larger focus on class and nobility.

Lily is a muggle attending St Madeline's, a school out for her blood specifically. In an escape attempt, she meets James Potter, and the two form a romantic inclination.

Later on, Lily's role as the mother of The Chosen One comes into effect, and she is taken by Dumbledore to be hidden as noble Aurora Rockford. James, who went to the muggle war during this time, was left unaware of this development.

Tropes used in this story:

  • Arranged Marriage: Dumbledore requires Lily to become involved in a royal marriage, and chooses a suitable spouse: Frank Longbottom. James was actually one of the choices, but his recent spouts of rebellion (inspired for his love for Lily) convinced Dumbledore to look elsewhere.
  • Artistic License – History: Muggle history is all well and fine. However, the magical timeline is largely ignored: the wizarding world should have been at war with Grindelwald instead of Voldemort, James and Lily's generation were too young to be alive in WWII times, and blast-ended skrewts were a recent discovery by Hagrid in the 1990's.
  • Boarding School of Horrors: St Madeline's. Especially if you're Lily.
  • Historical AU: Where in canon, James and Lily attended Hogwarts in the 1970s, this fic sets their story three decades prior.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Lily doesn't tell anyone at Hogwarts about her crush on James (due to believing he died and doubt that he was magical). A large amount of the conflict starting from the Hogwarts arc could have been resolved if more people knew about her crush. It says a lot that there are still problems after everything is explained.
  • Uptown Girl: The original premise- Lily is a muggle commoner, and James is a magical noble. Later on, it is discovered that Lily is also a magical noble, and the romantic conflict takes another angle.
