The dark siblings by odlawzein

Outcry, available at Sufficient Velocity, SpaceBattles, and Fanfiction.net, is a fanfic by Zaru and LD1449. It is a crossover between Worm and Dark Souls II.

Nadalia, the Bride of Ash and Child of Dark, escaped the Sovereign's invasion of the Brume Tower, finding refuge in the dark chasm. It was from there that her spirit wandered somewhere else.

A place beyond the scope of Light.

Beyond the reach of Dark.

Finding a very special mortal girl.

Seek strength, Taylor. The rest... will follow.

(NOTE: This story is being rewritten. Even though the rewrite is similar, this list of tropes applies to the original version, as there are a number of changes and tweaks. Read the rewritten version here at AO3.)

Tropes contained in Outcry:

  • Accidental Murder: Weld's backstory has him waking up with no memories in a drug house and gang members drawing guns to shoot him. He wasn't aware he was made of metal so he punched as hard as he could and ended up killing three of them.
  • Achilles' Heel: Darklurker still retains its weakness to fire.
  • Actually a Doombot: Taylor pulls this on Legend at one point with her ash clone.
  • Adults Are Useless: Yamada states that Taylor doesn't trust authority figures for one of two reasons, one being she believes this. None of the adults were helpful in dealing with her bullying problems so she didn't bother to even tell her father. This is in contrast to what we see, as the moment that Piggot, Miss Milita, and the other adults became aware of the situation they all tried to handle it as delicately as they could.
  • An Arm and a Leg: When Raime comes out, he uses his flaming sword to burn away Sophia's arms and legs.
  • An Ice Person: Emma "Triggers", due to a combination of Aisha's prodding and Yamada's therapy shattering her world view of prey and predator to leave her "living in fear", she awakens Alsanna and her powers.
  • Anatomy of the Soul: Ashburn kills Leviathan by crushing his soul, but in return her own is shattered as well. Several teams scatter to recover the soul fragments across Brockton Bay, unaware that many pieces made it to Drangleic as well. While Taylor's soul is successfully reassembled in the Abyss, due to the actions of one of the fragments and its interaction with the Scholar of the First Sin, she's now missing several memories and has some knowledge she didn't have earlier.
  • And I Must Scream: Taylor as she realizes that Nadalia and Raime were influencing her actions, right when the latter takes over her to fight Lung in dragon mode.
  • Angelic Abomination: The Darklurker and The Simurgh as per their respected canons.
  • Anyone Can Die: Leviathan kills Kaiser, Aegis, Velocity, and Glory Girl.
  • Armor Is Useless: Averted. Taylor's armor is the source of her strength and protection. Her Brute ranking comes from it, and she's taken more than one bullet with it. It rightly gets her angry when Glenn suggests she forgoes it.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Raime, natch. He thinks he can takes on Legend, Lung, Dragon, and an assortment of other heroes alone in his Interlude.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Insight (Tattletale) does this during the trip to find Taylor. She informs Legend and Eidolon the Darklurker's only weakness is fire.
    • Miss Milita had a second trigger at some point before Leviathan that gave her the power to physically see and exploit weaknesses in the structure, the composition of things living or otherwise. The only exception is Nadalia, who doesn't have one.
  • The Atoner:
    • One of the major reasons why Legend comes to Brockton Bay.
    • Also heavily implied to be the main reason Tattletale turns herself in to the authorities to make up for all the damage she's caused, especially to Taylor.
    • Emma after a number of therapy sessions and eight months in prison.
  • Back from the Dead: Vicky at the end of 8.8.
  • Battle Ballgown: After Outcry, Glenn wants Taylor to change her outfit. Taylor doesn't want to for practical reasons. This is the compromise, she has tinker-tech fabric resistant to knives and bullets while being allowed her armor above.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Miss Militia, meet Coil. Coil, meet shotgun.
  • Be Yourself: Weld's advice to Taylor.
Weld: "I joined the Wards on probation in Boston, after a year, probation was up, and they liked me. So I kept doin' what I was doin' to be a hero. As for how I deal with the looks I get… to be honest, I kinda don't. There are people that matter to me, and people that don't. And those who mind or look at me funny, don't matter, and those who matter don't mind. I don't try to make myself perfect to please a bunch of strangers. Just do what you want. Be yourself."
  • Big Brother Is Watching: Brian realizes that the contract for Aisha knowing Taylor's identity will give them the right to constantly monitor her throughout her life. He calls Lisa and she "convinces" the guy to settle for something less invasive.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Alsanna neutralizes Nadalia long enough for Eidolon to save Taylor.
    • The Eleum Loyce Knights hold back the Abyss for long enough for Taylor to kill Leviathan with the Dark Soul and for Nadalia, Raime, and Darklurker to separate her from the Dark Soul.
  • Bittersweet Ending:
    • The end of Arc 5 boils down to this for Taylor. Coil's dead, but she's got a body count in the triple digits and was forced to work with the PRT even after they lied to her about Sophia. She basically sums it up as being an attack dog on what amounts to a very short leash, and then she has to be around Emma, who she learns triggered. And that's not even getting into the problems with her own powers...
    • The end of Arc 7. Leviathan kills a lot of characters, including Glory Girl. Taylor snaps again and her power ramps up to cover a good portion of the city in ash and darkness, with Alsanna barely holding it back from getting worse, and Taylor's soul is broken into fragments and scattered through Drangleic and Brockton Bay, but Leviathan is killed.
  • Black Dude Dies First: A Taxi Driver states this as an excuse why he won't take a specific road to get Brian to the PRT, because its E88 territory and he doesn't want that blood on his hands.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Nadalia really doesn't understand humans and non-dark stuff that well. She only had one aspect of her father, Manus, and only through connecting and bonding with Taylor does she begin to experiment with it.
  • Blood Knight: Lung and Raime.
  • Break the Haughty: Emma by the time Arc 5 rolls around. Between Yamada shattering her world view and being called out by Aisha, she actually triggers.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Taylor kills Leviathan by crushing its soul, but in doing so she shattered her own soul into fragments and scattered them across Brockton Bay and Drangleic.
  • Brown Note: Nadalia's scream, which knocked virtually every living thing within three miles on its ass and was labeled Outcry.
  • Brutal Honesty:
    • Yamada points out that Taylor doesn't even trust her father since he never recovered from his wife's death.
    • Taylor's fragments are rather honest about certain aspects of her. Such as only staying with the Wards because she didn't want it to all be a lie and how she doesn't need her father anymore.
  • Canine Companion: Taylor picks up a puppy she finds roaming the streets at night post-Leviathan.
  • Came Back Wrong: After having her Soul shattered by killing Leviathan's, Taylor gets some new memories and loses some of her own. Aldia even warned her some of her soul is gone for good. Likewise, Glory Girl appears to have lost her powers after dying and being resurrected by King Vendrick.
  • Chainsaw Good: Taylor's ash sword is essentially this when it comes to cutting things. The ashes grind like sandpaper, shearing off flesh. She even took off one person's arm.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience:
    • On the Sufficient Velocity version text is colored to symbolize certain characters. Nadalia's is grey due to ash(and black red when enraged as seen at outcry), and Alsanna's is a light blue to signify ice. Raime's speech is red to signify his anger and his thoughts ash Grey to show his connection to Nadalia. Pure Black represents the Dark Soul itself.
    • While they are written in standard color, both the Simurgh and Scion's true names are written in different fonts.
  • Cool Old Lady: Director Dollerant. She's calm, runs a different ship than Piggot or Armsmaster, and can deffuse Taylor to a reasonable degree.
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: The Ash Idols are too recognizable for the PRT to cover up as part of Surtr's abilities, so they stated it was a side-effect of Taylor breaking the Master Influence.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: It made her almost sick to do it, butYamada points out that if Emma is going by the "Strong prey on the Weak" then if the gangster who "assaulted" her managed to overpower her then it would have been okay, by Emma's own worldview, for him to continue just because she was weaker. It was enough to make them both uncomfortable, but it had to be done to break her of that mindset.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Raime/Surtr plowed through everyone the PRT threw at him until Nadalia decided to call him back and let them retreat in shame the first time. And, in Armsmaster's case, this was rather literal in that it cracked his skull and put him in a coma.
    • Taylor, hopped up on the power of the Dark Soul, vs Leviathan. The Endbringer isn't even able to run away.
  • Dead Person Impersonation:
    • Nadalia adopts the form of an ashen Annette Hebert, initially to deceive Taylor. Eventually, however, she... sort of settles into the role.
    • More darkly, she enters Emma's dreams in the same shape, deliberately allowing her to think her former friend's dead mother is raping her mind from beyond the grave.
  • Demonic Possession: Coil uses Tattletale to shatter Ashburn as a distraction in his attempt to seize Dinah. As a result, Nadalia goes Mama Bear, buries Taylor's mind in the Dark, and puts Raime in the driver seat. The demented knight recreates his armor and weapons on top of Taylor's body and massacres everyone at the site. This has two consequences: first, Raime is labeled as a new parahuman, codenamed Surtr, and second, the PRT, well aware of who it is under the armor, spins a story about Taylor falling under the control of a Master.
  • Domino Mask: Glenn wanted Taylor to wear this as part of her PR issue. She refuses on the grounds of preferring her helmet, which can block bullets.
  • Dynamic Entry: Raime pulls this off on Alexandria in 8.6 with his sword. Good thing she's Nigh-Invulnerable.
  • Eldritch Abomination: All of Manus' fragments. Aldia, Scholar of the First Sin.
  • Enemy Within: Raime and Nadalia, at first, to Taylor. Once she realizes they're separate people, though, their influence vanishes fast. Note that this was not deliberate on either of their parts, they are simply so overwhelmingly powerful compared to Taylor that that they did it without meaning to.
  • Energy Weapon: Legend and Darklurker are capable of this, but Legends' are capable of abstract things, like a beam to deaden pain and stop blood-loss.
  • Emotion Control: Gallant has this as part of his being The Empath and Nadalia can calm Taylor down should she be on the verge of a panic attack.
  • The Empath: Gallant, which gives him insight into a lot of people, including Tayor's repressed feelings and Emma's regret.
  • Flat "What": Taylor's reaction to meeting Glenn Chambers.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Dragon, Chris (Kid Win), and Colin (Armsmaster) by virtue of being Tinkers.
  • Geeky Turn-On: Aisha seems to have a thing for Chris, constantly flirting with him and pinching his butt.
  • Get Out!: Piggot, to the Wards in Legend's Interlude. Right before she starts tearing into Legend and Rebecca Costa-Brown about why she kept Shadow Stalker despite everything.
  • Ghost Memory: Taylor post-contact with the Dark Soul gained knowledge like this.
Taylor: "I have memories in my head that aren't mine, knowledge of things that I'd have thought impossible. That were impossible."
  • Good Is Not Nice: Piggot is looking out for Brockton Bay as best she can. The way she does it often toes across the line to do it, and she's unpleasant for the most part.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Miss Milita is normally law-abiding, but after Coil crosses too many lines she doesn't give him a chance to surrender. She just blows out his arms and legs before putting a bullet in his brain. It's also heavily implied that she tortured him first, or at least made his death unnecessarily slow and painful.
Miss Militia: "I’ll make an effort not to enjoy this… but I expect you’ll scream. That’ll make it so much harder..."
  • Hated by All: Coil's final gambit to get Dinah pushed him solely into this position. He not only broke the unwritten rules by having Trickster unmask Sophia in front of Taylor, but combined with Tattletale's prodding, ambushing the Wards with potentially lethal force, and unleashing Raime/Surtr, you'd probably have a shorter list if you asked who DOESN'T want Coil's head on a platter by the end.
  • Heroic BSoD: Taylor gets sent into a big one courtesy of Coil's machinations and Lisa being the unwilling/unwitting instigator. Nadalia taking advantage of the situation to "catch" Taylor as she falls just makes the situation worse.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Mouse Protector reveals that Taylor's got this rep post-Outcry from her branch.
Mouse Protector (On what the Protectorate thinks): "That she’s scary strong. Like, Triumvirate strong. Siberian strong. The bend-over-kiss-your-ass-and-half-the-city-goodbye-type of strong. Other than that and how you guys got Dragon to make a custom, instant kill room to hold her, we’re not hearing much."
  • Hope Bringer: Alexandria and Eidolon see Taylor as this after she kills Leviathan.
  • Horrifying the Horror:
    • Leviathan was freaked the hell out by the monster Taylor became and tried to flee. Keyword being tried.
    • Nashandra was poking Taylor's soul fragment and threatening to crush it right up until Nadalia made it clear she would end her if she didn't cut it out right then and there.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Alsanna has these in comparison to Nadalia's red eyes. Emma gets them as well when she channels Alsanna.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Piggot's attitude regarding events in Brockton Bay and her measures to keep things from running out of control. The place is on a downward spiral and she's out-manned by over twice the number of villains. Sophia may have been a liability, but she was still useful to both the Wards and Protectorate as a hard counter for virtually any cape using armor of some kind like Hookwolf or Lung, and she had everyone else involved in the Winslow incident taken to court for it as quickly as possible.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Number Man, after learning Leviathan was dead.
  • Intangible Man: Shadow Stalker and Darklurker have selective Intangibility.
  • It Only Works Once: Alsanna makes it clear that she can't stop Nadalia again if she gets pissed off.
  • It's All My Fault:
    • Chris (Kid Win) was noted to be depressed in Clockblocker's Interlude, because he ended up making Emma trigger.
    • Victoria (Glory Girl) blames herself somewhat when Taylor goes Surtr because of how she intimidated both Taylor and Chris to stay quiet in covering up her crime.
    • Miss Militia in her interlude for everything that happened during Outcry because she was Just Following Orders.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Doctor Mother made some very good points in 8.1. Not about killing Taylor but she is unstable, her power continues to escalate, others will seek to use her, and she can't control her powers when Nadalia shows up and they have no hard counter. She and Number Man also point out that they've worked on assumptions before:
Doctor Mother: "We stopped you and Eidolon from killing Manton after Hero's death because he might prove useful against Scion. We've given people powers because they might help in the final battle. We allowed the situation in the Bay to escalate because it might have given us useful data. Just as I am acting on the possibility she might be a threat, you two are making your own assumptions! She might be capable of fighting Scion. We might be able to control her. We might be able to help her, the Simurgh might not take control of her. We are all utilizing the same size of brushes to paint these might's and maybe's! So let us cease pretending that any of us are any less blind than the other party! We're all fumbling like fools in the dark."
  • Just Following Orders: Miss Militia, in regards to keeping quiet on the matter of Sophia being a Ward, one of the things that led to Outcry. It haunts her, thinking that she made Taylor suffer like she did, becoming a killer by doing this.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Glenn wants Taylor to go into combat wearing a dress in 6.2 for PR purposes, but she points out it's impractical given that everyone and their mother likes shooting at her. They eventually make a compromise, but when Leviathan arrives she leaves it behind.
  • Killed Off for Real:
    • Aegis and Velocity are killed by Leviathan's Waves in 7.2, and Glory Girl in the next chapter.
    • Leviathan himself is killed after Taylor grabs the Dark Soul itself to avenge Glory Girl.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Nadalia tries to erase Miss Milita's memories of Taylor in 8.7. Her perfect memory No-Sell the attempt because she remembers forgetting it, looping back.
  • Logical Weakness:
    • Water for Taylor. Ash turns useless when submerged in enough of it, robbing her of most of her control of it. Then again, enough ash does the same thing to Leviathan's Water Echo.
    • And once she grabs the Dark Soul directly, the weakness goes away entirely.
  • Loss of Identity: Insight, Eidolon, and Legend are faced with this as they travel through the dark.
  • Mama Bear:
    • Nadalia, for all her Blue-and-Orange Morality, really does care about Taylor in her own way and was ready to curse everyone to death when she thought her "daughter" was in danger. Furthering the connection, she's assumed the form of an ashen version of Annette Hebert and refers to Taylor as "my little owl", aping the real Annette. She's also been visiting Emma's dreams in the same shape, exacerbating her guilt by inserting fragments of Taylor's memories of their friendship and its breakdown.
      • When Nashandra started torturing the fragment of Taylor's soul, Nadalia got pissed and promptly reminded her who the strongest of the Sisters is.
    • Purity started blasting everyone around her when the ABB torching everything in sight while trying to get Coil threatened Aster and Theo.
  • Mind Rape: Nadalia has been torturing Emma by showing her Taylor's memories during her sleep.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Taylor thought Chris was gay until 9.2.
  • Must Make Amends: Emma wants to apologize to Taylor, but she's too terrified of everything and Taylor wants her dead.
  • Named by the Adaptation:
    • Miss Militia's full name is Hannah Washington.
    • Aegis' full name is Carlos Mendez.
    • Clockblocker's full name is Dennis Cook.
    • Browbeat's full name is Brendan Browner.
    • Kid Win's full name is Chris Gale.
    • Mouse Protector's full name is Jennifer Miller.
  • Necessarily Evil: Piggot saw Sophia as this. She was too useful not to have in the Wards or Protectorate because of her abilities.
  • Newcomer Saves the Day: Alexandria brought in Emma specifically to do this, counting on her Shaker ability to freeze the waves in 7.2. It works with a little help.
  • Night of the Living Mooks: Taylor ends up bringing dead capes to life in the finale of the Tempest Arc as zombies, using their powers to help kill Leviathan.
  • Noble Bigot: Piggot still has her canon bigotry against Capes, but she does acknowledge the Wards and Heroes and doesn't go out of her way to make their lives hell or do anything to hurt the Protectorate or PRT.
  • No-Sell:
    • Alexandria is the only one immune to Nadalia's Black Fog. Everyone else, including Legend and Eidolon, suffered through the agonizing pain of the curse until it dissipated.
    • A murderously enraged Taylor, hopped up on the Dark Soul, no-sells everything serious business Leviathan can pull off.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Taylor grabs the Dark Soul directly and flat-out kills Leviathan in Interlude: Alexandria. An Endbringer is dead with no action from Zion, Brockton Bay is wrecked, and Taylor just harnessed a Lord Soul directly.
Faultline: " Endbringer's just dropped a notch on the goddamn food chain. Even if I don’t strictly play the heroes and villains game BS that a lot of other parahumans live by, even I can see that the nice, safe status quo might have just been kicked straight to shit."
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Piggot when she realizes that if Coil is aware of Sophia's identity and Taylor's, he could easily set her off. That's exactly what happens.
    • Everyone has this, including Leviathan, Alsanna, and Nadalia, after Taylor reacts to Glory Girl's death by grabbing the power of the Dark Soul.
    • Aldia, Scholar of the First Sin, is in Earth Bet, and the Simurgh is learning to take into account the Dark's actions.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Nadalia to the PRT.
  • Passed-Over Promotion: Miss Militia is denied the position of Hero Commander, with it instead going to Mouse Protector, because she still went along with Piggot and Armsmaster's decision even if she was against it, meaning she's in some part responsible for the collateral damage, and Taylor wouldn't respond well to it while they're still walking on eggshells. Director Dollerant mentions that in a few years she would put in a recommendation, but for now it has to be this way.
  • Photographic Memory: Miss Militia doesn't forget anything as a part of her power. Because of this, she's needed to retrieve Taylor through the Abyss. It messes with your memories and you'll lose your way unless you have this power.
  • Playing with Fire: Taylor's primary means of attack.
  • Power Incontinence: Raime and Nadalia have this issue with regard to Taylor at first. Because they are both so overwhelmingly powerful compared to Taylor their thoughts and feelings start to influence Taylor even without them meaning to. Once Taylor gets stronger and figures out that they are actually there in the first place this stops happening. See also Enemy Within above.
  • Powers via Possession:
    • Taylor's shard is being manipulated by Nadalia, hence why she's got control over ashes. In the event that she senses real danger to Taylor (like Lung going Dragon), she forcibly has Raimes take over or unleash her own power, suppressing Taylor's will in the process. After Outcry she had a "Second Trigger" and her control over ash was further refined.
    • Alsanna possesses Emma to help her during the Leviathan fight.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: "Killing warlords is always easy."
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Coil got Dinah by the end of Arc 4, but his method of doing so not only burned a hole in his fortune, the collateral damage and manipulation ended up pissing off every hero and villain barring the Travelers into wanting to kill him. Miss Milita included.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Glory Girl dying before Nadalia could heal her in 7.3 was the last straw for Taylor. She went out and woke up the Dark Soul, despite both Raime and Nadalia telling her not to.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Director Dollerant was brought in specifically to be this.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Nadalia has red eyes with black scalera, and when Taylor is about to take on the Dark Souls(her vsision darkens) she has the same eyes as mama dearest.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Chris and Aisha have this dynamic.
  • The Scapegoat: Piggot is taking the fall for the mess caused by Coil, a report by Jessica Yamada, and the issue of Ashburn going Surtr, meaning she's on the way out. By the Rapport Arc she's been replaced with Dollerant.
  • Slasher Smile: When Nadalia smiles while attempting to harm someone she does so in a way that is described as grotesque, ugly, or wrong.
Miss Militia: The thing wearing Annette Hebert’s face smiled at her.
The smile was… wrong. She’d seen many smiles in her life and could remember each with perfect clarity. She’d seen everything, from the genuine to the false, to the insane.
This one was… wrong… off. It was as if the thing behind it was merely mimicking what it had seen, as if it had forgotten how to even begin to make the expression and was unable to emulate what it had seen enough to overcome what it was trying to hide.
  • Slave to PR: Glenn tries get Taylor to conform to this to distance herself from Surtr. He's got a point.
Glenn Chambers: "No, because my point is that a lot of her most infamous stunts come from that combat style of ‘front line cape’. If you don’t want to have people looking at a mini-Surtr every time they look at her then she needs to hold back on both aspects. Her aesthetic, along with her skills. Right now the story of Surtr being an entirely different cape is holding, and its very tenuous. If you want to divorce yourself from that at all then this is the only way to do it."
  • The Social Darwinist: Sophia. As Shadow Stalker, she would only help those who defended themselves first, and leave weaklings to their fate. Emma as well, as if she allowed herself to be seen as weak then she'd be right back where she was when those gangsters cornered her in an alley, whereas if she was strong nothing could hurt her. Yamada slowly breaks Emma through being Cruel to Be Kind combined with her stint in prison.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Battery is revealed to be pregnant in 6.4.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Word of God confirms this is the reason why the Ivory King was not used in the story.
  • Superpower Lottery:
    • Taylor is classified as Brute 5, Shaker 6, Blaster 3, and Master 3, and that's before Raime and Nadalia come into play. Raime/Surtr is considered an A-rank threat and in Arc 5, Nadalia's Dark Fog and constant shift in abilities would have been the equivalent of an Endbringer. Word of God is that Nadalia can easily depopulate a continent at full power, plus she has far more abilities than shown.
    • Emma is a Shaker 10, capable of creating ice within a mile and the range is growing. She also has Alsanna, another Child of Dark, and her abilities. Compared to Nadalia, Alsanna is weaker in the sense can freeze only a state or so at full power, but that's still enough damage that she'd be an A-rank threat on her own.
    • Eidolon, as per canon. Mouse Protector even refers to him as "ten time Lottery Winner, Big, Bad, and Green".
  • Super-Senses: Insight has Eidolon give her this in order to navigate the Dark better.
  • Tailor-Made Prison: The basement of the PRT was turned into one of these for Taylor. Filled with Tinker-tech motion sensors, hard light barriers, the ability to remove oxygen to snuff out the flames in a moment’s notice, brute rated walls, the works.
  • There Are No Therapists:
    • There's supposed to be one in Brockton Bay PRT, which Jessica notes. Piggot had been covering the Wards by stating they went to a "Private Psychologist" because they needed to cut the budget after the last one was fired. Not to mention that Emma needed it as well.
    • Averted as of Chapter 5. Yamada has been placed in charge of Emma and Taylor's therapy.
  • Time-Limit Boss: Leviathan. Legend makes it clear if they can't drive it off in an hour, Brockton Bay will sink into the ocean.
  • Title Drop: The incident at the climax of Arc 5 is known as Outcry, for when all the ash idols released Nadalia's scream and dark fog.
  • Transferable Memory: One of Taylor's fragments wanders into Aldia's home, where it absorbs some of his knowledge. Aldia, amused, sends her back after taking some of the fragment's memories in exchange.
  • Unblockable Attack: Regent's Body Control power. All during the prison break he had Taylor tripping over herself, being dropped while in the air by Glory Girl, and just being a pain in the ass.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Raime underestimates the Triumvirate and they hand him his ash-covered ass while holding back to avoid killing Taylor inside of him. Then Nadalia gets involved...
  • Unwanted Assistance: Nadalia's idea of "halping" her sister and Taylor often leads to suffering for all parties involved.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • Tattletale. To be fair she didn't really have much choice in the matter what with Coil holding a gun to her head when she started having second thoughts.
    • Or the time she ended up having Lung and Kasier go postal trying to kill Coil, ending up with Surtr vs Legend, Alexandria, and Eidolon. That spiraled out of her hands.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Taylor's fragmented soul asks this of Missy and Chris in Arc 8.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Taylor and Emma, as per source materials. Unlike source materials, Emma realizes her mistake after therapy and wants to make up for it, but Taylor is far angrier than canon and has made it clear she'll kill her on sight.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Interlude: Alexandria. Leviathan dies
    • From 8.1: Taylor's soul is shattered into shards all over Drangleic and Brockton Bay, with the Emerald Herald welcoming her.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Gallant calls out Armsmaster in his Interlude for helping to cover Shadow Stalker's tracks and lying to Taylor. Armsmaster makes it clear he didn't like it either, but the Dry Dust matter was important enough and telling Taylor would have likely put them down a cape who could have, with her powers, easily have killed someone as a vigilante, ended up getting killed, or pressed ganged into the E88. It was a bad situation overall and their options were limited.
    • Taylor and Kid Win call out Glory Girl for that canon incident of her throwing a dumpster at a normal person, even if pissed off. The fact that both Vicky and Amy were more concerned with the bad PR that could result didn't help either since it basically puts Taylor into the same position that Emma's group was, covering for the wrongdoings of a friend.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Part of Tattletale's manipulation to get everyone against Coil had Grue injure her in a way that prevented Victor from reading her body language and played on Kaiser's sympathies.
  • Wretched Hive: Brockton Bay is virtually divided into gang territory, has a very big drug problem, and the PRT is severely short-staffed. Even the heroes cut corners and bend the rules when they have to, and everyone basically cheats the system in someway. It doesn't help that Cauldron is actively not helping as well.
  • Yandere: Nadalia really doesn't like competition when it comes to being Taylor's mother, as Miss Milita found out.
Nadalia: "SHe iS miNe. YoU won’T Get to bE heR MotHeR!"
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Lady Photon's reaction when she learns that it's Emma's first time in any battle, let alone when she's supposed to play a key role in hindering Leviathan.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Leviathan's soul was taken once Taylor embraced the Dark Soul, truly killing it.

Alternative Title(s): Outcry
