Emerald Gleaner, The Virus
Oskar Osäker: True Omnivore and its sequels Emerald Gleaner: Viral Unicorn and Oskar Osäker: Your Worst Enemy are My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and [PROTOTYPE] Crossover fanfictions authored by Legionary on fimfiction.net.

It tells the story of a Blacklight Evolved named Oskar Osäker, who gets dropped into Equestria just before the start of season one of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Quickly assuming the identity of Emerald Gleaner, a unicorn mare created from Rarity and Roseluck's DNA, Oskar infiltrates Ponyville and Equestrian society in an effort to neutralize the Elements of Harmony and become "the top of the food chain."

Of course, this is Equestria, where friendship is magic.

Legionary also runs a tumblr as extra content to the series, Ask Emerald Gleaner.

    Chronology

Oskar Osäker: True Omnivore and Emerald Gleaner: Viral Unicorn provide examples of:

  • Antagonistic Offspring: Oskar's "Emerald Gleaner" form is a unicorn born, partially, from Rarity's DNA. His original plan involves driving the Elements of Harmony, of which Rarity is one, apart.
    • Emerald/Oskar is no longer this by end of the first fic.
  • Aura Visions: Oskar's Viral Pulse.
  • Because Destiny Says So: It turns out that every living being's lives as well as everything in Equestria is predetermined from birth to death and no matter what was done, nothing changed in the end. Emerald unintentionally changed this.
  • Becoming the Mask: One of the biggest premises of the story and the main source of Oskars character development.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Sorta. There are many instances of people running into Oskar/Emerald or hitting her and hurting themselves because she is incredibly dense
  • Benevolent Boss: Oskar made it a point to be this towards the Diamond dogs in his Enclave, and while he is still in essence a 'dictator' the dramatic increase in living conditions the have made him a Villain with Good Publicity; in the eyes of his subordinates. And by the time the sequel rolls around it's gotten to the point where some of them see him as their version of Celestia and dogs from the independent packs have started moving there while calling him by a royal title.
  • Berserk Button: Slavery is a pretty large one for Emerald; during the events of "A Dog And Pony Show", a Diamond Dog slips a rope bridle on her and calls the group 'workhorses'... and she makes them regret it.
  • Breath Weapon: Oskar consumes a dragon, gaining his ability to be a living Plasma Cannon.
  • Bio Punk: In the later books the Enclave grows more and more into this trope as Emerald introduces more augmentations and viral creations
  • Carnivore Confusion; In Equestria pretty much everything, including the insects, is sapient. This brings with it an obvious problem for every species that needs meat to survive.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The result of the Berserk Button above. Emerald/Oskar holding back was the reason it wasn't a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. Happens to the Changeling Army as well
    • Alternate!Oskar to the Mane Six, the only reason they weren't killed was because he still needed them.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Oskar has had it bad. Dad was a deadbeat who left his mom. Mom was killed by a Hydra during the REDLIGHT outbreak and had to survive by himself during that time. then had to survive the BLACKLIGHT outbreak and was then recruited by Alex Mercer to become one of his Evolved and was forced to do things such as killing his girlfriends pregnant sister that still haunt him to this day.
  • Death World; Even though Equestria is home to things like dragons and hydras the complete lack of 'Harmony' (and magic) gives Twilight the impression that earth is this when Emerald tries to describe her old home. Emerald wasn't trying to make it sound like that, and she wasn't describing the New York Zone, it was simply because the description made Earth sound like a whole planet that's like the everfree forest- a 'strange' and 'unnatural' place where plants grow on their own, the weather isn't controlled by ponies, and the animals take care of themselves (and may even eat you if they're hungry enough). This also come into play later, see Gaia's Vengeance below.
  • The Dreaded: Oskar is still fearful of Mercer despite the fact he is dead. And more than one form Oskar himself adopts becomes this to the ponies
  • Eldritch Location: The Everfree Forest is this to the ponies just like in canon. The Monster of the Everfree note  and Sovereign isn't helping this. In fact, that latter would like it to stay this way because no one is going to try to control it
  • Emergency Transformation: Happens to Navi at the End of Viral Unicorn
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Emerald has this reaction at the end of chapter 8, when everything backfires horribly.
  • Extreme Omnivore: As a Black Light virus Oskar can devour anything organic. Taken to extremes after consuming a dragon as it can then convert material like gems, stones, and metals to biomass as well. If how she breaks out of a magical seal is any indication Emerald is fully capable of devouring entire worlds right down to the very earth given the time and motivation. Souls aren't off the diet plan either.
  • Fictional United Nations: The League of Nations in Equestria is this. note
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Emerald says in Your Worst Enemy that she may have forgiven Twilight for accidentally turning Emerald to stone with the Elements of Harmony but she will never be able to forget that.
  • Gender Bender: Oskar was born (physically and self-identifying as) male. Emerald Gleaner is female and identifies as such. They're the same person. Eventually, Oskar stops letting his original Y chromosome express, making his human form also female.
    • Also subverted by the fact that as a Blacklight Virus, Oskar/Emerald is really completely genderless. In reality it's just wearing a body and creating the appropriate personality to go with it, but beneath that it's just a amorphous clump of biomass more akin to an Eldritch Abomination.
  • Giving Radio to the Romans: Oskar brought a lot of knowledge from Earth, mixing it with his various powers to great effect, producing better armor, firearms, and everything needed to improve the Diamond Dogs' living conditions.
  • Gaia's Vengeance: the spirit of the Everfree forest really doesn't care for the Ponies habit of trying to control nature...
  • Horsing Around: Like in canon, the ponies toss the Diamond Dogs off themselves... and Emerald's reaction was particularly violent after the "workhorse" comment. The poor idiot had too good a grasp on the makeshift reins.
  • Innocent Aliens: By comparison to humans, ponies are quite innocent. Emerald's intentionally seductive photographs fly right over the heads of most ponies, with the exception of Princess Luna and Celestia though it took Celestia a few moments to figure it out what the poses mean.
  • Instant Expert: By consuming an expert on knowledge, Oskar gained knowledge on magic theories, although he still needs help to put the knowledge to use due to his unique magic circuit.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Emerald occasionally shows signs of this, though mostly because of what she had gone through shortly after getting powers.
Emerald ...I just wanted to be a baker when I grew up.
  • Lured into a Trap: At the end of chapter 8 of Viral Unicorn, Twilight invites Emerald on a walk, only to lead her to her friends where they blast Emerald with the Elements of Harmony.
  • Naïve Newcomer: How the Eldeer view Emerald. Especially when it comes to politics.
  • No Kill like Overkill: What you get when the Equestrian nation's armies are armed with medievil weapons go against an army with 21st century grade weapons and tactics.
    • The Blackwatch Old Guard are on the receiving end of one from Emerald.
  • No, You: In Your Worst Enemy. Twilight does this to Alternate!Oskar who just thinks that it was childish. She literaly meant "you" as in her version of him (Emerald) who just after that exchange fly kicks Alternate!Oskar in the face and sends in flying into a wall.
  • Manipulative Bastard: The Eldeer as a whole are this as they have been manipulating the Leauge's carnivor and herbivore factions for ages. Given who they're based off though this is expected
  • My God, What Have I Done? / Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Guilt is a powerful element in the story, starting early with Oskar actually avoiding setting himself up for this by not killing a pony for genetic material. Later, during the evens of Suited For Success, Oskar, as Emerald, hates herself for trying to make matters worse and attempt to drive the Mane Six apart, turning the situation around and helping Rarity.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Emerald's abilty to shift her mass and muscles grants her disproportionate strength, which doesn't go unnoticed by her friends.
  • Metaphorically True: Emerald loves to use this trope whenever she can. Going so far as to state that she has never needed to be good at blatantly lying.
    • Being a pony makes Twilight a terrible liar. Emerald unintentionally fixes that by telling her about this method of lying.
  • Organic Technology: Emerald creates meat trees for food for the Enclave. Also capable of using viruses to accomplish other goals besides infection.
  • Parental Abandonment: Oskar's father was a deadbeat who left Oskar's mum pregnant with him and his mother was killed by a Hydra.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: By the end of Your Worst Enemy Emerald is this if Alterante!Oskar is anything to go by.
  • Recursive Fanfiction: The stories have a few additional scenes written by another author, which can be found on the blog.
  • Raptor Attack: Emerald creates Raptors in the second book which are bullet proof, can breath fire and have spines on the end of their tails which they can launch at armor piercing velocities.
  • Screw Destiny: What the Channeler Old Master tried to do but failed and what Emeerald/Oskar has managed to unintentionally do.
  • Secret Identity: Emeraldnote  doesn't want anypony to know that she is the "Monster of Everfree." Eventually, Twilight discovers Emerald's real self. By this time, Oskar/Emerald trusts Twilight enough to tell her everything. This backfires on Emerald horribly.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: everything Oskar did to prepare for when the Equestirans eventually turn on him for being what he is only made it more likely to happen.
  • Shapeshifter Baggage: As standard for Prototype, when changing size Oskar/Emerald retains the sum of his/her total mass. In mouse form, he weighed as much as the sea-serpent he had consumed earlier that morning.
    • Subverted later on as Emerald learns to use magic to make herself as light as everyone else
  • Shapeshifting: Emerald/Oskar, obviously.
  • Shout-Out: Quite a few
    • Sovereign's name comes Mass Effect after Emerald sarcastily responds
Emerald: Are you going to tell that I can't hope to even grasp the nature of your existence now Sovereign?
    • One of the Primordial Spirits is called The End
  • Soul Eating: Word of God has stated that this is what BLACKLIGHT does. They aren't gone for good though as Emerald has brought back Gilda by reconstructing her body and giving it her a copy of her original memories minus the bit of Emerald snapping her neck.
  • The Stations of the Canon: Subverted. Emerald manages to avoid many of the episodes original escalating plot lines by simply talking to the main 6 and snatching away the Idiot Ball before it can snowball into a problem. The down side to this is that many of the life lessons Twilight and the others would have walked away with aren't learned because of Emeralds interference and this comes back to bite them all later...
  • Taken for Granite: Unlike canon, Discord avoids a repeat of the lawn ornament treatment, albeit at the price of having the stuffing beaten out of him.
    • Emerald, however, was not so lucky. And it was unintentional, to boot.
  • The Virus: Emerald, literally. Navi also becomes this by Emergency Transformation.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Emerald and Sovereign have become this.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: What Emerald can do unintentionally. it's more of a case of Emerald does something such as create machines that can resurrect the dead that causes this rathen then will it. It would normally be be Screw Destiny if she wasn't the only who can do it.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: What the Channeler Old Masters found out much to their dismay. Until Emerald/Oskar arrived.
