Fanfic / Operation: Moonfall

Go To

Operation: Moonfall is a Sing Fanfic written by Ahdoss.

After the events of Sing 2, everything is going perfectly for Buster Moon and his troupe. Unfortunately for him, Jimmy Crystal has plans for retaliation.

All spoilers before chapter 13 are unmarked!

Operation: Moonfall provides examples of:

  • Affably Evil: For someone who's mission is to expose Buster, Cleo is surprisingly polite and friendly. She even offers him advice at one point.Eventually, she drops the evil part.
  • All Take and No Give: Jimmy is as much of an Ungrateful Bastard as ever towards Cleo. Eventually, he gets called out on it.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Cleo asks Jimmy to consider what would have happened if he had killed Buster, the latter is completely speechless.
  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed with Ryan. He gets more of an actual speaking role but is still a supporting character.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: For all of Jimmy's bravado, he's a complete mess underneath it.
  • Cerebus Retcon: Jimmy's snacking habit is revealed to be a response to panic attacks.
  • Cooldown Hug: Jerry gives one to Jimmy when he has a panic attack.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: For all his faults, Jimmy didn't bribe Kilborn and is even amused by the idea he would stoop so low
  • Flipping the Table: Jimmy does this during a panic attack. He regrets it almost immediately.
  • Grey-and-Grey Morality: In stark contrast to the original, characters are shown far more ambiguously: Jimmy Crystal is given sympathetic moments, Buster Moon's darker traits are given more focus, and Cleo is an Affably Evil Well-Intentioned Extremist.
    • Later on, the Moon Theater Troupe gets in on this: Nooshy plans to get revenge on Jimmy but immediately regrets it when it results in Jerry getting a concussion.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Nana fulfills a similar to role as she did in Sing 2 but is less polite about it here.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Cleo's son, Taiga, casually asks Jimmy if he's murdered anybody else.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Ernie may be a two faced Con Man, but he's right when he points out how misplaced Buster's optimism is in regards to Crystal's ruthlessness. Buster himself acknowledges it afterwards.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Both Jimmy and Porsha have a habit of getting names and phrases incorrect. They even misuse "olive branch" the same way.
  • Luxury Prison Suite: Jimmy gets one, naturally.
  • Morality Chain: Mercy, Jimmy's late wife, is implied to have been this.
  • Only Friend: Jerry and Jimmy fulfill this role towards each other. Though, in Jimmy's case, it's less "Only Friend" and more "The one person he hasn't driven away." Seeing Jerry seemingly turn on him causes Jimmy to snap.
  • Parents as People: Jimmy's portrayal is far closer to this than in the source material. He's shown to have his own insecurities beneath his exterior and does legitimately care for Porsha. He even acknowledges he played a part in turning her into a Spoiled Brat, saying that he wanted her to grow up with more than he did.
  • Passing the Torch: Near the end, Jimmy steps down as CEO and names Celeste Cassidy as his successor.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: While significantly less of a jerk once he reforms, Jimmy is still quick to anger and insult others.
  • Shadow Archetype: Ernie embodies all of Buster's negative traits with none of his redeeming qualities.
  • Shipper on Deck: Porsha supports the idea of Buster and Suki being a couple.
  • Shout-Out: Eddie and Buster play a Mortal Kombat-esque game, complete with the mention of friendships.
  • Sympathetic P.O.V.: We're shown Jimmy's response to finding out Moon lied about Clay Calloway, where he's so caught off-guard he goes into a panic attack.
  • Taking the Bullet: Jerry takes a shot with a paintball gun intended for Jimmy, resulting in a concussion
  • Therapy Is for the Weak: Jimmy is so disgusted by Cleo's offer to send him to a therapist, he fires her on the spot.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: While Jimmy was far from nice before, his actions were at least (initially) justified as Buster had indeed committed fraud. Here, he’s out for nothing but revenge and doesn't even try to hide it.
  • Villain Has a Point: Despite her manipulative ways, Cleo is correct to call out Jimmy for not simply arresting Buster for fraud.
    • Later on, Nana invokes this when she tries to get Buster to see things from Jimmy's perspective.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Played For Drama. Jimmy's belief that Jerry has turned against him results in a full-blown panic attack. This is the catalyst from which he's finally able to understand the others.
  • Villain Over for Dinner: Invoked. Buster and the others track down Cleo and invite her for tea. Which she accepts.
  • Wham Episode: Two big examples:
    • Chapter 12: Buster temporarily leaves Redshore and finds out that Jimmy has been let go.
    • Chapter 25: Cleo gets fired by Jimmy. Afterwards, she teams up with Buster
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Rosita gives a big one to Nooshy, Ryan, and Johnny after their plan to embarrass Crystal lands Jerry in the hospital.
