"Special Agent Phil Coulson of the FBI is competent man when it comes to solving cases. Competent, busy and not at all good with children. But somehow he found himself tripping into parenthood (again and again and again)...and he really has no idea what to do with that."

Of Lovebugs and Promises is a kid fic AU based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and White Collar. It follows the adventures of Phil Coulson, a Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's White Collar Crimes unit. Through his work, he meets and accidentally and/or purposefully ends up adopting several children, child versions of the Avengers.

The fic primarily follow a Day in the Life format through interludes, with character introduction chapters in between.

So far, the following child versions of the Avengers have been introduced: Clint from Hawkeye, Natasha from Black Widow, Tony from Iron Man, Bruce from The Incredible Hulk, and Steve from Captain America.

The work is in progress, hosted by Archive of Our Own here.

Of Lovebugs and Promises provides examples of:

  • Berserk Button: Don't try to harm Bruce's siblings. You won't like him when you do...
  • Character Focus: Events in the work tend to focus on one or two particular characters during a chapter.
  • Crossover:
    • Primarily between White Collar and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
    • Doctor Who character Martha Jones randomly appears to act as Clint's doctor.
    • The X-Men: First Class version of Erik Lensherr is a high powered lawyer and Charles Xavier still owns his own school for children that Clint and Natasha attend. Whether or not it is still as mutant school remains to be seen.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: Russian, to be more specific. Though it is only two words in two chapters out of seventeen.
  • Living Lie Detector: Bruce sees through lies through a mixture of reading body language and his own body's reaction to hints of deception.
  • Noodle Incident: Several including whatever got Steve and Tony universally banned from all Apple stores.
  • Point of View: Third person omniscient with perspectives shifting by chapter or section.
  • Shout-Out: A blink and you'll miss it shout out to Digimon.
  • Sink or Swim Fatherhood: Phil's initial relationship with his first child, Clint, who he agreed to take in on accident and couldn't bring himself to backpedal on.
