Fanfic / Of Apologies and Food Fights: A Glimpse Into the Afterlife

Go To

After the events of season one, the surviving characters are left mourning after their lost loved ones. In contrast, the non-surviving characters are having a much more... chaotic experience in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse.

Of Apologies and Food Fights: A Glimpse Into the Afterlife is an All of Us Are Dead fanfiction co-written by GlitterFairy_21225 and Glowstar826. It can be read on Archive of Our Own by clicking on the hyperlinked title.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Jimin goes to great lengths to hide that she locked the two pining couples in rooms from Ms. Park, only for it to be revealed after she leaves to uphold a lie and the others fail to get them out in time. But even if those efforts had succeeded, Nayeon rather easily convinces Ms. Park to give up her attempted punishment for her.
  • Back from the Dead: Gwinam is verging on resurrection, though he needs to apologize to the dead members of Class 2-5 first and foremost. After he does, he leaves while the rest of the characters are distracted. Cheongsan has already been brought back to life.
  • Berserk Button: Jimin wants to keep all pining and sexual tension away from her, and resents the very idea of her friends ruining her afterlife with romantic drama.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The dead characters are still dead, the living characters are still grieving, and Gwinam is now alive to cause trouble for the latter. But there's still a lot to be hopeful about. All the dead characters are Together in Death and the couples have begun dating. Cheongsan has also been brought back to life and has reunited with Namra. The evil bullies and adults are in Hell. And most hopeful of all, the dead characters have discovered the ability to manifest whatever they want, and the fic is ended on a scene of them experiencing real joy for the first time since dying, enjoying the amusement park Joonyeong created, and having fun together, being described as 'burning bright and beautiful' as Onjo hoped they would be.
  • Cool Teacher: Ms. Park is the only adult from Hyosan to be in Heaven and seeks out her students, spending her afterlife with them.
  • Oh, Crap!: Everyone when they look down on the Earth to watch Gwinam wake up alive.
  • Dead to Begin With: The story begins after season one, meaning all the characters who died start the fic dead.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Myunghwan is insistent that he doesn't deserve to be in Hell because his father is rich.
  • Foodfight!: Jimin angrily throws a handful of Joonyeong’s bulgogi at Gwinam in rejection of his apology. After he throws a plate at her, the rest of the kids join in.
  • For the Evulz: Gwinam mocks the permanently dead characters for no other reason other than deriving joy from messing with them.
  • Gilligan Cut: Ms. Park, after attempting to give Jimin detention, relents and admits that detention really isn't a heaven thing. Cut to Hell, where the bullies and teachers who contributed to students' suffering are serving detention and made to write lines on the chalkboard.
  • Heaven: Where the dead members of Class 2-5, Ms. Park, and the dead seniors ended up.
  • Hell: Where the bullies, the principal, and the abusive teachers ended up.
  • Hell of a Heaven: After Gwinam interrupts their dinner and the kids all have a food fight, they look down at their mourning friends, who comfort themselves with the thought that they're now in a better, happier place. After everything that just happened, which had been preceded by Jimin's stressful attempts to get the couples together while hiding it from Ms. Park, the characters realize just how much they haven't been enjoying their afterlife thus far. It gets better.
  • Ironic Hell: Hell is presented as detention for the bullies, who always avoided punishment when alive, and the adults who took glee in punishing most students but turned a blind eye to kids who actually deserved it.
  • Large Ham: The characters yell at one another quite a bit.
    Myunghwan: I—DON'T—DESERVE THIS! MY—DAD—IS RICH!
  • The Matchmaker: An interesting case with Jimin, who resorts to locking both Woojin and Joonyeong as well as Isak and Gyeongsu in rooms together upon realizing that both pairs are pining after one another. That's all she does, aside from knocking and urging them both to hurry up and kiss, but it's still successful.
  • Mood-Swinger: All the sections involving the living characters are played completely straight, with an emphasis on their grief. And then the story goes back to the afterlife. This happens twice. First, when Daesu's grief over Woojin and Joonyeong is described in great detail as being quite torturous, which is noted on by a dead Woojin... who is dressed up as an angel, and that's the main focus of Joonyeong, who is dressed normally, and Daesu's grief is quickly forgotten. Second, when all the living students, minus Cheongsan and Namra, throw a vigil for their friends, a scene put between the dead characters having a food fight, and the dead characters in the aftermath of their food fight.
  • Mundane Afterlife: Nayeon describes Heaven, or at least the section of Heaven they ended up in, as 'Basically a cleaner version of Hyosan'. Hell comes in the form of detention. All the characters are dressed up in costume versions of devil and angel clothing, with accessories such as staffs and wings being plastic. Even when Joonyeong discovers the ability to manifest, he creates an amusement park, albeit a huge one. Also, for whatever reason, the food dispensers don't work properly.
  • No Animosity in the Afterlife: Nayeon is no longer hated by the others and she seems to have changed her ways for good.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Woojin and Joonyeong. Isak and Gyeongsu. Both thanks to Jimin.
  • The Reveal: Why Jimin is so desperate to hide her locking the two couples in rooms from Ms. Park is revealed to be because she did that sort of thing a lot when she was alive, and Ms. Park tries to give her detention for this.
  • Sex Dressed: No comment on what either couple actually did in the hours both remained in their respective rooms, but afterwards, all four come out looking disheveled.
  • Stock Costume Traits: The Heaven characters are all dressed as angels, with white robes, halos, and plastic wings, while all the Hell characters are dressed as devils, wearing blood-red bodysuits, headbands with horns, tails, and plastic staffs.
  • Together in Death: All Heaven characters are hanging out throughout the entire fic. Additionally, the Hell characters, though they aren't as happy to be stuck with one another, and it's probably not intentional on their parts.
  • Winged Soul Flies Off at Death: Subverted. All the Heaven characters are required to dress as angels as per their dress codes, however they aren't actually made angels and instead they just wear costumes, and Isak and Minji make it clear that the wings they receive are plastic.
