Go To

New chance by Hektols is a Naruto Peggy Sue Fan Fic. It differs from the norm in that instead of Naruto being the one to travel back in time, it is a revived Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, who, for the majority of the story, goes under the alias of "The Black Angel" Arashi Uzumaki. And he wasn't the only one...

Summary from FanFiction.net: "A 10 years old Naruto meets a man who will change his life and the Ninja Nations, but will it be for good? The Yondaime has returned and he is not happy. NaruHina later."

Tropes that appear in New chance:

  • Acceptable Breaks from Canon: This story was published in 2008 and its update schedule slowed around 2012 — long before the manga clarified certain things and revealed others, and long before the manga ended in November 2014. One of these things is the revelation that Kushina was the second jinchuriki of Kurama, the Kyuubi no Yoko. The author later tried to reconcile the discrepancies with a series of explainations and a couple retcons.
  • Action Mom: Kushina, Naruto's mother and one of the most powerful kunoichi of Konoha.
  • A-Cup Angst: Some girls such as Sakura, Yakumo, or to a lesser extent Fuu, don't like being reminded of their lack of curves.
  • Adaptational Badass: Everyone.
    • Minato needs to be mentioned apart, given that he was already one of the strongest canon characters. On top of all the abilities he had in canon (and still has), in this fanfic he has perfect mastery over all five elements, can create invisible clones made of air, can fly, and has a healing factor that slows aging.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Minato, while still a noble and heroic character, is WAY more aggressive and boastful than his canon counterpart.
  • All-Loving Hero: Naruto.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Fuu's treatment by her peers is even worse than Naruto's (they don't even allow her to live in the village), with only Shibuki and a couple other Taki ninja treating her like an actual human being.
  • Amazon Brigade: Before the War arc, a new Genin team is formed, composed by Fuu, Isaribi and Karin, with Anko as their Jonin-sensei.
  • Amazon Chaser: Every Hokage save Tobirama married a powerful, temperamental woman.
  • Arch-Enemy:
    • Played for Laughs. Sasuke has one in the form of Tora the cat.
    • Over the course of the story, Minato becomes this to Madara.
    • Shikamaru and Asuma are both this to Hidan.
  • As You Know: One of the author's most persistent flaws. Expect a lot of characters talking about stuff they should know already.
  • Ascended Extra: Everywhere, but for antagonists, Hidan, who serves a secondary antagonist and the main antagonist of Shikamaru's overall character arc. Not only is he one of the time travelers, he even joins Oto, becoming Kin, Zaku, and Dosu's jonin sensei. He even succeeds Orochimaru as Otokage.
  • Author Filibuster: Whenever a character brings up "Haruto", expect this trope.
  • Back from the Dead: After performing an incredibly complex and costy ritual, Kushina is eventually brought to life by Minato.
  • Badass Family:
    • The Uzumakis. Minato and Kushina are pretty much two of the most powerful characters of the story, and their son is quickly following their footsteps.
    • As in canon, the Hyugas as well.
  • Barred from the Afterlife: Minato always wondered why he never met Kushina after their deaths. Turn out she remained in the mortal plane as a ghost.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Itachi is willing to attack Pein for causing his little brother emotional duress via using Sakura as a human shield against Sasuke's chidori. Thankfully, she survived.
  • Big "NO!": Minato lets out an epic one after Gai declares him his "second eternal rival".
  • Bland-Name Product:
  • Bullying a Dragon: Invoked as part of Iruka's Training from Hell, which involved picking fights with ninja MUCH stronger than him (such as Anko or Kakashi), usually provoking them into trying to kill him.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Jiraiya was already this in canon (being a super pervert and porn writer didn't stop him from also being a kick-ass ninja), but here it's shown that he's also a surprisingly competent Hokage. At first, many people (mostly Konoha's female population) thought he'll turn Konoha into a paradise of perversion, and would force the kunoichi to wear revealing and sexy uniforms. Turns out he made several reforms to the ninja program that were met with universal praise, such as carrying out Tsunade's proposal of every squad having a medic, passing a law to force ninja to keep their ranks for at least one year before being considered for a promotion in order to stop powerful but inexperienced ninjas to climb through ranks too fast (as it happened with Kakashi, who clearly wasn't ready to become a Jonin despite his skill), banning Genin from taking missions outside the village unsupervised, turning the last phase of the Chunin Exam from one-on-one fights to team fights (if Chunin are supposed to be squad leaders, how can you test their teamwork and leadership skills in one-on-one duels?), as well making an incredibly effective publicity stunt (to release a calendar of sexy pictures of the strongest Konoha ninja, and later kunoichi) that increased the number of Konoha's customers.
  • Chick Magnet/Even the Guys Want Him:
    • Arashi/Minato, and to a lesser extent Naruto, after a picture of the two of them training shirtless spreads around Konoha, and later around other villages.
    • Kakashi, after a picture of him unmasked becomes public knowledge.
    • One omake mentions that being attracted in any way to Itachi Uchiha is not considered cheating as an unwritten law among kunoichi. Itachi is so good-looking that letting his hair down and smiling is enough to send a huge contingent of fan girls into a nosebleed-induced coma.
  • Combination Attack:
    • Naruto and Hinata have the "Rasen no Mai" (Dance of the Spiral), which combines Hinata's Gentle Fist with the second part of the Rasengan training method, which results in an attack that can permanently destroy a Tenketsu instead of just temporarily sealing it.
    • In one of the non-canon omakes, Itachi and Kisame show the "Farterasu". See Fartillery below.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: As Hiashi points out, the whole "Hyuga Wars" arc could have been avoided if Minato's stubborness didn't make him refuse to read Hiashi's letter.
  • Dead Fic: Hasn't been updated since April 2018.
  • December–December Romance:
    • Homura and Koharu. Sasuke accidentally watching them making out traumatized him so much he awoke the sharingan.
    • Also, Jiraiya and Tsunade become a couple shortly after the former becomes the Fifth Hokage.
  • Door Stopper: At more than 170 chapters and a word count that surpasses 600K. You will take quite some time to read it.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Arashi Uzumaki's first order of business is to establish his badass credentials. Then he revealed he was really the Fourth Hokage during the Iwa-Oto invasion.
    • His wife Kushina is easily one of the most feared women alive, for good reason.
    • In later chapters, Naruto becomes known as "The Prince of Konoha".
    • The Hand of Death. Given that it's a group formed by Minato, Hiashi, Kakashi, Yamato and Zabuza, it took them no time to create a reputation of a fearsome team. Later they added Kushina and Shizune to their roster.
  • Dream Team: The Hand of Death is an elite group leaded by Minato formed by the strongest ninja of Konoha.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady:
    • As in canon, Haku.
    • A lot of people in the Academy thought that Neji was a girl. Many of his male classmates had a crush on him.
Naruto: WHAT!? NEJI IS A GUY!?
    Tenten: I'm not a lesbian!
  • Engineered Public Confession: A variation. Minato and co. have Sasuke hide in a closet while they speak with Itachi about the truth of the Uchiha Clan Massacre, preventing him from attempting to go rogue again and/or be imprisoned for it.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: A bit of narration in chapter 160 shows what the author thinks of certain developments of the manga's ending.
It was not a surprise that after the Fourth Ninja War of the original timeline, Naruto was promoted straight to Jonin and Tsunade claimed that he would succeed her in a few years (unlike some nonsensical timelienes where Naruto not only remains a Genin, after the War, but Tsunade, after only four years as Hokage, makes Kakashi her successor, not mattering the fact that he was weaker than her that he couldn't defeat any of the Akatsuki members he fought against or that he no longer had the Sharingan, his main advantage over other ninjas and the requisite to use his no longer available Signature Move Chidori.)
  • Fartillery: In one of the non-canon omakes, Itachi and Kisame defeats the Hand of Death after Itachi used Amaterasu on a supercharged fart of Kisame aimed at them.
Yamato: Are we going to add this part to the mission report?
Minato: And say that we were almost killed by a flaming fart? I don't think so.
  • Fate Worse than Death: While Kushina was dead, rather than being send to the Afterlife, she was forced to stay on Earth as a ghost that nobody could see nor hear, and watch how her son had an incredibly sad and lonely childhood, completely unable to help him in any way.
  • Freudian Threat: Kushina threates to castrate the Hokage (Jiraiya) and Iruka if they put Naruto on the same team as Sasuke and Sakura again, calling Team 7 a "disaster".
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Gai seems to be this among the other Jonin. Kakashi and Zabuza only agreed to join Minato's new elite team if Gai wasn't on it.
  • Friend to Bugs: Inverted. Fuu hates bugs, but thanks to the Nanabi, they're naturally drawn to her, since according to Shino, the Nanabi is the closest thing bugs have to a god. And as per canon, Shino plays this straight.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: A LOT. Besides the usual honorifics, expect to see "Nani?" instead of "What?", "Gomen" instead of "Sorry", "Arigatou" instead of "Thank you", "Hai" instead of "Yes" and so on. And of course, there's also the misuse of "Teme" as a noun or a suffix instead of a second person pronoun that's kind of the staple of Naruto.
  • Generation Xerox: When Madara was fighting Minato and Kushina in the Snow Country, an image of Hashirama and Mito appeared in his mind, overlapping with them.
Madara: History repeats again, my plans foiled by a stupid Hokage and his annoying Uzumaki wife...
  • Hand Blast: The Hizashi, a beam of chakra fired from one's palm, developed by Minato and Hizashi in the afterlife. Like with the Rasengan, Naruto combines it with wind chakra to create the Fuuton: Hizashi Tatsumaki (Wind Release: Tornado Hizashi)
  • Happily Adopted: Some of Minato's meddling includes Gai adopting Lee. You can imagine how that turned out.
  • Happily Married: Minato and Kushina. So painfully happy. After Kushina is revived, Minato goes to great lengths to show her how much he loves her for no other reason to show her how much he loves her. It makes all the other women in the village downright jealous.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Minato has zero problems killing villagers and council members and he uses some very creative punishments. Only when he has reason to however. Lampshaded when Homura asks if they can't have a council meeting that doesn't end with Minato brutally killing somebody.
  • Ho Yay: In-Universe. Darui believes that Izumo and Kotetsu are a gay couple still in the closet.
  • Imaginary Love Triangle: Hinata thinks there's one between Naruto, Haku and herself, which Haku himself puts to an end when he reveals that as an heterosexual boy, he is not interested in Naruto.
  • Invincible Hero: There's absolutely nothing (nothing human at least) that comes close to Minato's power level.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: When Kushina was a kid, everybody, including Minato, kept mistaking her for a boy. She got fed up and decided to grow her hair to Rapunzel levels to avoid further confusion.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Often used to mock some cliches of Naruto Fanfiction.
Minato: So it was not necessary for me to come here? You already solved the problem?
Hiashi: Yes I did! It was written on that letter you refused to read! Who do you think I am? I'm the Hyuga Clan Head, not one of those figureheads without any real power that appear in bad stories! You really thought I couldn't keep order in my own home?
  • Less Embarrassing Term: It's not makeup, it's war paint.
  • Love Triangle:
    • Like in canon, Ino and Sakura fight for Sasuke's love. In the end, the winner is Sakura.
    • Laterin the story, there's another one between Neji, Haku and Tenten, with both boys pinning for Tenten, with her not sure which one she should choose.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father:
    • In the first chapter, the stranger playing with Naruto reveals himself as the Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage and Naruto's father.
    • Much later, it's revealed that Haku is Zabuza's biological son.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: Naruto refers to Hinata as his best friend. Yet he never realizes that some of the things he does for her can be seen as romantic gestures, such as conning Tsunade to make Hinata her apprentice after he learns Hinata has an interest in medical jutsu.
  • Mistaken for Gay: During the Academy Tournament, Naruto tries to defeats Sasuke using the Harem no Jutsu, to which Sasuke proudly claims that such jutsu won't have any effect of him. Naruto has a minor "Eureka!" Moment and changes it to the Reverse Harem no Jutsu. Sasuke was far from amused.
  • Moment Killer: Naruto and Hinata have a very touching moment while Naruto is in hospital. Unfortunately it gets ruined by their peers and Sai asking why they didn't kiss.
  • My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad: Naruto and Sasuke have this conversation before Minato and Itachi were about to fight in a sparring match Sadly, the spar was interrupted before it could began due Akatsuki invading Kumogakure.
  • Mythology Gag: The first name of Minato's alias, Arashi, alludes to the early fandom belief that the real name of the Fouth Hokage was Arashi Kazama thanks to his name reading like that on the Toad Summoning Scroll. It would get debunked, but stories published as far as 2008 still have the Fourth Hokage named Arashi.
  • Nepotism: Subverted. Konoha has a specific rule preventing this, where a jonin cannot become the sensei of a genin team that has a close relative on it. Hence, in this timeline Lee was not Gai's pupil (Gai even ended up not becoming a sensei) and Naruto did not end up with either of his parents as his sensei.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Played for Laughs. When Naruto mentions and explains the Clan Restoration Act as part of his knowledge on Bloodline Limits, Sasuke pretty much curses Naruto for doing so, since now his (Sasuke's) fangirls will coordinate their efforts instead of fighting each other.
  • Official Couple:
    • Minato is incredibly loyal to Kushina, even after death. Nothing can compare to his happiness when she is revived.
    • Naruto and Hinata, as stated by the summary. Though it didn't happen until the Snow Country arc.
    • Other couples that form in the story are the already canonical Asuma/Kurenai, Sasuke/Sakura and Shikamaru/Temari, Iruka/Anko, Kakashi/Shizune, Shino/Fuu and Jiraiya/Tsunade.
    • Sai/Yakumo. Kankuro/Ino is also a possibility.
  • Omake: There's one every chapter, often including many a Shout-Out or Mythology Gag. There was some confusion over their canonicity, since despite being focused on humor and often being very absurd, some events of the omakes such as Iruka's Training from Hell and his relationship with Anko were later referenced in the main story. The author then clarified that the omakes are indeed part of the story, with the exception of the "deleted scenes".
  • Peggy Sue: An unusual one in that the character that went back was one that was dead only to be revived and then sent back. Besides Minato, other time travelers include Shino, Shikamaru, Temari, Kankuro, Kushina (as a ghost), Jiraiya, Tsunade, Hidan, and Madara.
  • Pitbull Dates Puppy: The usually mild mannered and friendly Iruka ends up dating the wild and energetic Anko.
  • Prehensile Hair: Kushina manages to weaponize her long hair by channeling chakra into it, not only controlling it at will but also making it as hard as steel.
  • Related in the Adaptation:
    • Fuuka, a Filler Villain with powers vaguely similar to Kakuku's, is here Kakuzu's little sister who ends up joining Akatsuki.
    • As mentioned in Luke, I Am Your Father, Zabuza is Haku’s biological father.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Too many to count (most of them delivered by Minato), but chapter 169 is worth mention, given that it is almost nothing but Kakashi delivering a really long one to fake Obito.
  • Retcon: Early in the story, Bloodline Limits were classified into three groups: Eyes (Like the Sharingan or the Byakugan), Physical (Like Naruto's Healing Factor note  or the Kaguya Clan bone manipulation) and Special Chakra (Elemental combinations like Wood Release or Ice Release). It also stated that if two people with Bloodline Limits of the same group have a kid, said Bloodlimits will cancel each other out and the kid will inherit neither. This is used to justify Tsunade's lack of Wood Release, since his unnamed father did have Wood Release, but married a woman with another elemental combination bloodlimit. This, however, was estabilished before the introduction of Mei Terumi, who does have two elemental combinations (Lava Release and Steam Release). In order to justify this, the story explained that the two Bloodlimits might resurface in the following generations, and hinted that if Tsunade had a child, he or she would probably be born with Wood Release and her unnamed mother's Bloodlimit.
  • Rouge Angles of Satin: The writer is a Spaniard with a very tenuous grip on the English language, and it shows. Though once you get use to it, the story becomes very enjoyable.
  • Running Gag: Every year on April Fools' Day there is a joke throwaway chapter that mocks the reader. Seeing as this story has been going on for six years, many of the readers that still stick with this story are savvy enough to check the latest update date if the latest chapter is an author's note saying that Hektols will no longer continue this story.
  • Settle for Sibling: Not only were Hiashi and Hizashi twins, but so were their wives. After the deaths of their respective spouses, Hiashi and Neji's mother Kyoko's relationship gradually grew closer — they fell in love with each other while having a Friends with Benefits relationship. Thus, at the end of the Hyuuga Wars arc, the clan suggests they get married in order to formally unite the Main and Branch House into one clan. Hiashi and Kyoko are initially reluctant to accept out of respect of the memory of their respective spouses — a problem Minato solves by revealing that Hizashi and Kyoko's sister got together in the afterlife.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Minato and Kushina towards Naruto and Hinata. They even refer to Hinata as their son's future wife quite a few times.
    • The Hyuuga elders as well, although their reasons are quite different, since they want to incorporate Naruto's Bloodline Limit to the clan by marrying him to Hinata.
    • A lot of people for Tsunade and Jiraiya, especially Shizune.
  • Shotgun Wedding: Two in the "deleted scenes" omakes:
    • The first, though more a "Katana Wedding" is between Sasuke and Sakura, after Naruto accidentally pulled Sasuke's pants down during a spar, revealing that Sasuke was wearing pink shorts with Sakura's face on them (a gift from Sakura herself) since Sasuke forgot to do the laundry and it was his only clean underwear. Sakura's outraged father then forced Sasuke to marry his daughter. Though the ending mentions that they did have a happy marriage and lots of children.
    • A second one happens between Naruto and Hinata, this time with an actual shotgun. When Naruto mentions that firearms are out of place in the Naruto world, Minato mentions that you can see a shotgun duing the Wave Country Arc.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Minato and Kushina just can't stop from showing how much they love each other.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Many characters, but somebody worth mention is Kaiza, a Posthumous Character from the Wave Arc that probably very few people remember, and even fewer would bother to save.
  • Super Breeding Program:
    • The whole point of "The Plan" that has been mentioned quite a few times by the Hyuugas during the first part of the story. Basically, they want to marry Hinata to Naruto so their future children will have both the Byakugan and Naruto's Healing Factor, thus making the future generation of Hyuuga way more powerful.
    • Also, in the past the Uchiha and the Hyuga Clans interbred in order to produce children with both the Sharingan and the Byakugan, or maybe to create a combination of both doujutsus. Turn out said children were born with neither.
  • That Came Out Wrong: In one of the omakes, Jiraiya sees a couple girls admiring a picture of Minato/Arashi and Naruto training shirtless, and asks to have the picture (in order to track Naruto and his new father figure). While the girls assume Jiraiya is gay and wants to fawn over Arashi, Jiraiya says that is Naruto who got his interest. When he realized that he sounded like a pedophile it was too late.
  • The Stations of the Canon: Subverted. There was a lot of the Academy years that included Minato's meddling; as a result of his actions and those of other time travelers, the fic resembles that of an AU fic. Among the major changes includes Jiraiya becoming the Fifth Hokage instead of Tsunade, Naruto and the rest of the Rookie Nine graduating a year early, and Hidan joining Oto and Orochimaru, and becoming the jonin sensei of Kin, Zaku, and Dosu.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening:
    • Played for Laughs. See Troubled Fetal Position below to see how Sasuke awakened the Sharingan in this timeline.
    • Played straight, however, when Sasuke awakens the Mangekyo Sharingan after accidentally impaling Sakura with a Chidori that was meant for Pain, when the latter used the former as a human shield before Sasuke could stop the attack. Fortunately, Sakura manages to survive.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: After Sasuke infiltrates the Hokage's tower at night and sees Koharu and Homura making out, Sarutobi finds Sasuke then next morning in a closet in this position, sucking his thumb. The experience even awakened his Sharingan.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: Jiraiya proposes to Tsunade this way:
Jiraiya: Senju Tsunade-Hime, Slug Sannin, Granddaughter of the Shodaime Hokage, Grandniece of the Nidaime Hokage, Student of the Sandaime, Original Godaime of Konoha, Konoha's Chief Medic, Greatest Medical Ninja Ever, Legendary Sucker, Most Beautiful Woman Ever and Woman of my Dreams...will you marry The Gallant Jiraiya, Toad Sage, Super Pervert and Second Godaime Hokage of Konoha and make him the Happiest Man Alive?
