Taken from their rural home and flung back into a world of darkness and deception, young Ansatsuken fighters Shinji and Asuka must struggle to preserve both their lives, and their fighting spirits, in the face of new enemies from both Heaven and Hell.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Senshi no Michi by Wandering Student is a Neon Genesis Evangelion / Street Fighter Fusion Fic.

It can be read here.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: Shinji and Asuka are raised by Gouken and trained in the Ansatsuken style. Rei learns Dan Hibiki's ridiculous style and somehow she makes it work. And Hikari and her sisters are ninjas.
  • Beam-O-War: Ramiel's energy beam smashes into a massive Shinkuu Hadoken fired by Shinji's Evangelion. Both energy attacks struggle against each other briefly before causing a massive explosion.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Shinji "sits up in his hospital bed with a start" when he wakes up from a nightmare where he meets an evil-looking, murderous version of himself.
  • Coincidental Broadcast: Gouken is watching TV while having lunch when a news broadcast shows a battle in Tokyo-3, and a giant robot using one of his fighting moves on a monster. Shocked, Gouken realizes he needs to go to Tokyo-3.
  • Death Glare: Misato throws an absolutely murderous glare at Gouken when she is woken up at 6:30 AM by the shouts and crashes coming from his training room.
Abruptly, the doorbell rang out, and Gouken padded across the expanse of the training room to answer it. The door slid back, revealing a dishevelled and displeased Misato, who glared at Gouken with a hatred seldom seen in mortal men.
"Ah, Captain Katsuragi. Good morning," Gouken greeted her, warmly. "I trust you slept well?"
Misato stared at Gouken for several moments, perhaps contemplating on how best to remove his spine, before she nodded, grunting.
  • Dope Slap: Misato playfully smacks Asuka on the back of the head when the younger girl is rolling her eyes at Shinji and their master Gouken getting all emotional. When Asuka protests, Misato reminds her that she got all teary-eyed when they left their master's dojo.
Shinji nodded, his eyes shining. He hesitated, before reaching out for another hug, which Gouken gladly provided. Behind them, Asuka rolled her eyes at the two of them, only for Misato to lightly smack her on the back of the head.
    "Hey, what gives?" Asuka murmured.
"I seem to remember you getting all misty-eyed when we left the dojo," Misato replied, smirking.
  • Fusion Fic: The Street Fighter characters live in the Evangelion world or have been replaced by Eva characters.
  • Go Through Me: Gouken decides to go to Tokyo-3 and take his students back when he figures out Shinji and Asuka are being forced to get into war machines and fight giant monsters. Before he can properly give Gendo a piece of his mind, though, Rei steps between them. Gouken can take her, but she is good enough of a martial artist that he would need to use advanced techniques. Since he does not want to hurt her, Gouken reluctantly backs down.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: Asuka calls Gouken 'sensei', and her sentences are peppered with 'baka'. In chapter 31:
    "Gotta think ahead, baka!"
  • Jaw Drop: Gouken is watching a news broadcast showing a battle between several humongous mechas and a giant alien in Tokyo-3. His jaw drops when the red robot uses one of his fighting moves on the alien monster.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: Shinji and Asuka learn the technique, and are able to get their mechas shooting Eva-sized blasts; as was proven when Shinji's Eva fired a massive Shinkuu Hadoken to counter Ramiel's energy beam.
  • Luminescent Blush: In chapter 32, Asuka is rolling her eyes at Shinji and their master Gouken getting all emotional until Misato reminds her that she got all teary-eyed when they left Gouken's dojo. Asuka's cheeks instantly turn bright red in embarassment.
  • Motion-Capture Mecha: Shinji and Asuka are Ansatsuken fighters, and their robots are able to replicate their fighting moves, including their energy blasts.
  • Parental Abandonment: Gendo dumps Shinji into Gouken's lap when his son is four. A few months later, Peter Langley visits Gouken's dojo, reveals his wife's mental illness is getting worse, and talks Gouken into taking care of Asuka for a couple of months so she does not witness Kyoko snapping utterly. Peter never returned, and after one year he stopped calling.
  • Parental Substitute: Gouken took care of Shinji and Asuka after they were abandoned. As a result of being raised and trained in martial arts by a caring mentor in a peaceful, quiet environment, both children became more emotionally stable, balanced and focused than their canon selves; to the point that Asuka does not even want to think where she might be without his teachings.
  • Red Is Heroic: Asuka wears both a sleeveless red gi, and a red plugsuit.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: Asuka and Shinji wear sleeveless fighting outfits, showing they are more ripped than your usual teenager.
  • Shoryuken: Both Shinji and Asuka know the move, and Asuka wills her Eva to use it on Ramiel.
  • So Proud of You: Before saying goodbye to his disciples, Gouken takes Asuka aside to say he is proud of how much she has matured since he took her in.
Gouken: "You've come a long way, Asuka."
    Asuka: "Hm? Yeah, I guess I have… I was a nightmare when I first came here…"
Gouken: "You certainly were… I spent endless days wondering what horrors awaited Shinji in his next training session, how you would blow up next. But…" (smiling) "I worry no longer. You've grown into a stronger, more balanced person."
Asuka: "I guess so… But I couldn't have done it if you hadn't put up with me."
Gouken: "True. It wasn't easy – but it was worth it. And to see you, and Shinji, grow into strong, honourable warriors under me –- I couldn't be more proud."
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: In episode 4 Misato has picked up Shinji and Asuka and is driving them to Nerv for first time:
Misato:"We just have to show you two a few things before you can get a decent night's sleep. Sorry."
    Asuka:"A few things?"
Misato:"Just a few things at NERV. I haven't been told yet, we'll find out when we get there. Don't worry, it's nothing bad, or strange…"
Asuka:"I never said that it might be."
  • Trespassing to Talk: During a flashback scene, Gouken is heading back into the dojo when he finds Akuma standing on the porch. Gouken gets worried about his students, but Akuma states he has only come to warn Gouken about his disciples' future hardships.
  • Waking Up Elsewhere: Eva-01 gets flung up into the air and smashed into a mountain during the battle against Ramiel. Shinji passes out when his head collides with his cockpit's metal, and he wakes up one week later in Nerv's infirmary.
