NKC (short for New Kelp City) is a SpongeBob fanfiction, created by SpongeBob Fanon Wiki bureaucrat SpongeBot678. The fanfic revoles around SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Plankton and Squidward moving to the town of New Kelp City, wherein they meet local drug addict Rex and settle in to their new home. Season 1 of the show was written by SpongeBot678, before it was given to other SBFW bureaucrat AllisonLoaded for its second season.

Season 1 of the show was focused on the gang getting accustomed to life in their new city, while season 2 is focused on showing how the characters ruin everything; Squidward and Plankton start following an alt-right conspiracy, Rex has to overcome his addiction, and Mr. Krabs becomes addicted to necrophilia. The fanfiction also got a 3rd season, revolving around Squilliam Fancyson escaping to NKC after posting racist remarks on Twitter.

The fanfic is notably way edgier than the original show ever was; characters will often swear when not appropriate, murder others, or do some form of drugs; nevertheless, it's the sheer insanity of the show that keeps it interesting.

NKC provides examples of:

  • Aborted Arc: Season 3 of the show has ManRay mention that he has been stalked by Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy for months, but nothing comes of the concept.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Plankton went from evil genius who spent most of his days trying to steal Krabs' formula, to a completely deranged conspiracy theorist nutjob who uses violence to push his movement.
      • Squidward is also this, to an extent, as he begins following Plankton's insane theories and eventually helps him destroy the city.
    • Mr. Krabs went from the successful, greedy business owner of the Krusty Krab, to a deranged pervert who has sex with dead bodies to make money.
  • Arc Words: A common theme of the show. Usually, episodes will end on cliffhangers foreshadowing the next.
  • Ax-Crazy: Squidward and Plankton. At first, they are just reading their conspiracy theories, but then they devolve into destroying the city to push their messages.
  • Big Bad: While season 2 had no central villain, season 3 introduces the Tattletale Strangler, a deranged murderer who strangles innocent citizens to death with no remorse.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Season 2 ends with every character except SpongeBob and Patrick getting arrested (or in Rex's case, sent back to rehab).
  • Darker and Edgier: The show resembles so little of the original property aside from the characters and settings; Characters will do drugs, swear, murder others, destroy buildings, and have sex with dead bodies throughout the several episodes.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Squidward and Plankton show shades of this, but almost every character has their fair share of deadpan comments to make on the current situation.
  • Demoted to Extra: Sandy Cheeks and Pearl, two prominent characters from the base show, have barely any appearances in the second season; Sandy is only seen in the first episode, and Pearl is absent entirely.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Every main character is absolutely disgusted by Mr. Krabs' new profession. When SpongeBob and Patrick find out, Patrick vomits out the contents of his stomach.
Patrick: (offscreen) Jesus Sandal, I’m sorry for any and all sins I may have committed! (Vomits again)
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In season 2, Rex overcomes his addiction to cocaine and becomes an entirely different person. Lampshaded by Squidward, when Rex pays him a visit:
Squidward: I’m sorry, Rex, but I’ve never seen you like this before. Your smile, it’s really putting me off.
Rex: Oh, you don’t need to worry about my smile! It’s a beautiful day! I just wanted to check up on you!
Squidward: Rex, what happened? What did you do?
    • And later during the same interaction:
Rex: I had to spend an agonizing week not doing cocaine! And look how better it’s made me!
Squidward: “Better” isn’t the word I’d use.
Rex: What word would you use?
    Squidward: Fuckin’ creepy.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: The story arc in season 2 involving Squidward and Plankton is directly inspired by the real-life conspiracy theorist movement, Q-Anon, and the group's eventual involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot.
  • Sanity Slippage: Rex goes through this as he attempts to break his addiction to cocaine.
