Infinite worlds. Infinite possibilities. Twilight Sparkle is excited to research a spell designed to give her a peek into other worlds that she's in.
However, in her enthusiasm she doesn't keep track of how long she viewed the various worlds, causing the spell to malfunction and for a certain world's Twilight to merge with her.
When she wakes, she realizes she shares a mind and body with a pony named Midnight Star, an alternate version of Twilight that her spell ripped from Midnight's original world to her own. Twilight is initially excited to have another version of herself along to talk to, but Midnight has other plans for this Equestria, and a secret. Plans and a secret that could cost Twilight and all of Equestria the peace and security they had known for milennia.
Midnight Star
is a My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fanfic by Nebula Star, the first story in a trilogy. It has a sequel, Midnight Star: The Frozen Empire, and the third book, Midnight Star And The Father Of Light, is currently being worked on.
There is also a side story called After Midnight, detailing how the ponies in Midnight's original world survive after she is dragged into Twilight's Equestria.
This show provides examples of:
- Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Discord defeats Nightmare Moon and takes over Equestria. Midnight defeats them both and replaces them.
- Character Catchphrase: "All good things end", the mantra Midnight Star lives by.
- Crapsack World: In Midnight's world, Discord and Nightmare Moon joined forces and banished Celestia to the sun and then started fighting each other for centuries, forcing ponies to fight for them. After Discord beat and subdued Nightmare Moon he ruled Equestria in chaos, to the point of ponies fleeing to the forests inhabited by monsters. Then Midnight Star defeats the two and made it an even worse place.
- Crazy-Prepared: Midnight, knowing that the Elements of Harmony were the only possible threat to her, enchanted them. When Celestia was about to use them, Midnight takes them and destroys them.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Given that Midnight had actually beaten both Nightmare Moon AND Discord, with Twilight's own magic at her disposal along with her own she is easily able to overpower both Luna and Discord.
- Safety in Indifference: Twilight believes that the reason Midnight turned cruel was because she was to avoid getting close to others, in fear of losing them.
- Sympathy for the Devil: For all the things Midnight has done, Twilight was incapable of hating her because she understood why she turned out like this. This is why she took away her painful memories to make sure she could get a second chance to be happy.
- Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Midnight Star was born in a true Crapsack World where Discord and Nightmare Moon ruled Equestria in such heinous way than most ponies would rather live in the forests filled with animals. She lost her father at the age of three, her brother vanished at the age of five and one year later she saw her mother being eaten alive by a hydra. This eventually drove her insane and made her lash out at the world. Twilight Sparkle lampshades this.
