Fanfic / Magical Girl Lyrical Taylor

Go To

Taylor Hebert has had a hard time since her mother died in a car accident. Her best friend became her bully, her father became a haunted shell of a man, every day is a little bit worse than the one before, and her only comfort is a small red gem that her mother gave her the day before the accident. Then, one cold December day, after she's caught up in one of Uber and Leet's stunts, that gem reveals itself to be a certain Intelligent Device, activating to save Taylor's life...

"Magical Girl Lyrical Taylor" is a fanfic by Marsyas (P.H. Wise) that crosses Worm and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. It can be read at Space Battles, Sufficient Velocity, and Fanfiction.net. Beware Late Arrival Spoilers.

This story provides examples of:

  • Anyone Can Die: It's a Worm fic with Endbringer battles. The death toll of notable characters includes Miss Militia, Kid Win, most of New Wave, Shadow Stalker, Grue and Raising Heart.
  • Dark Action Girl: Fate immediately gets labeled as such upon her debut thanks to her black and red outfit and the fact that she wields a scythe, as well as her villainous actions. Glory Girl even gives her the moniker Emoscythe Kittensbane after Fate infamously attacks a bunch of fifty-foot kittens to get the Jewel Seed that made them grow.
  • Deal with the Devil: Cauldron is around as usual, and unsurprisingly get up to a bit of this. Unusually for them, it's in the form of protection- Annette Hebert made a deal with them to protect Taylor from Jail Scagletti's cyborgs, a deal which they do keep, but slightly too late for Annette to survive.
  • Flying Firepower: Starfall, Fate, Legend, and Precia are all fliers who wield absurd amounts of long ranged firepower.
  • From Bad to Worse: The end of the Escalation arc. Though the main characters have retreived the Jewel Seeds, Precia has flattened them all simultaneously- then news comes in that the second protest march has Gone Horribly Wrong and turned into a massacre, with the Empire and ABB fighting over the ashes, Yuuno is called away to try and help Lisa, Taylor gets told by Dinah that an Endbringer is incoming, is ambushed by Victor and before she can beat him for good, Behemoth arrives.
  • Godzilla Threshold: The end of the Behemoth fight. Arf and numerous other capes are dead, Raising Heart's destroyed, and almost everyone is crippled. Behemoth is still fighting, if critically injured. What does Taylor do? Grab all twenty-one Jewel Seeds and use them to ressurrect everyone she can, then kill Behemoth. And Leviathan. And send Ziz running to another dimension.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Starfall takes an entire rebar through the gut in the Bronx Arcology fight. She survives.
  • "Instant Death" Radius: Narwhal has this, her forcefield projection isn't Manton Limited so she can deploy them both in the air and inside people, and since she can deploy her forcefields anywhere within 15.24 meters (50 feet) of herself...
    • Behemoth also has this. When he shows up, it makes it incredibly dangerous for the main cast to try and fight him; only Myrddin's armlets keep a fair few of the Barrier Jacketed cast from being immolated inside-out.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite serious differences on the Nanoha side of the crossover, some things still happened. Most notably, the Book of Darkness incident somehow resolved itself with the Wolkenritter and Hayate ending up on the side of the Administration Bureau.
    • Raising Heart also knows Nanoha somehow- though exactly how is unclear, as she was accidentally memory-wiped by Cauldron.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Annette's maiden name and family history, among other things.
  • Mama Bear: Precia, who in stark contrast to her canon self seems to truly believe Fate is Alicia and loves her. Considering she is in a better place mentally AND had her illness healed by Panacea, when she decides to go Mama Bear Curb-Stomp Battle is the only way to describe the outcome.
  • Oh, Crap!: Taylor's reaction when she learns that the Butcher has two Jewel Seeds.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Even at the beginning, Taylor's very powerful. Later on, she's the most powerful ranged combatant in the world, and she specializes in long-range bombardment.
  • Retirony: PRT Sergeant Rodrigez is only a few days away from retirement when he is assigned to the Slasher Mist case. In a subversion, he survives thanks in part to Starfall's intervention.
  • Running Gag: People on PHO insisting that Starfall is the child of Nova and Legend. The first part is true, the second is false.
  • Sadistic Choice: Per Word of God Cauldron had to make one regarding Annette, they could save her from her pursuers or save Taylor but not both. They obviously chose Taylor.
  • ShoutOut
    • DBZA: Taylor has one friend on Space Book, named Tom. The entire line in chapter 1.4 used, almost verbatim, the dialogue Piccolo, in the very first episode, points out about his Myspace page.
    • Dune: When trying to keep from squeeing, she attempts a modified version of the Litany Against Fear.
  • Slowly Slipping Into Evil: This is stated to have happened to Lustrum and her team of parahumans. Several of them had left once they felt that Lustrum had crossed the Moral Event Horizon. At least one now works for the Protectorate while another Annette Hebert settled down with a family.
  • Squee: Taylor, upon encountering a herd of Tinker-tech animatronic reindeer, despite her best efforts to resist.
  • Sufficiently Analyzed Magic: Midchildan and Belkan magic systems are both heavily based on math. Raising Heart even notes how inversely similar it is to Clarke's Third Law — enough so that it would allow Armsmaster to become a mage.
  • The Gadfly: After being left active for a very long time without basic maintenance, Raising Heart often teases people for her own amusement but she isn't malicious about it.
  • Walking Spoiler: The very fact that 'Min', aka [Administation] exists spoils Raising Heart's death and Taylor's subsequent Jewel Seed fuelled breakdown/trigger.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Lots. Starfall has Nanoha's canon attacks, Fate has hers, and then there's more. Precia has a spell so powerful that even with Behemoth actively countering with dynakinesis it reduces him to a skeleton. When channelling all the Jewel Seeds Taylor fires an attack described as "anti-light" that kills Behemoth and Leviathan and sends Ziz running to another dimension. Leviathan was in the Marianas Trench and Ziz was in low Earth orbit when she did this.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Victor is driven to obsessive madness to gain control of the skills gained from Starfall. His actions cause Bakuda's trigger and force Kaiser to wash his hands of him.
