Lost Girl contains examples of:

  • Affectionate Nickname: The only people that are allowed to call Joanna Jo are Aegon, her brother husband, Daenerys her only aunt and Arya, her favourite sister.
  • Altar Diplomacy: Joanna wanted to do this. She wanted to marry a Lord Paramount or an Heir to secure Aegon an army but Aegon would not hear of it, having fallen in love with her himself. Also, the emergence of the dragons makes this an impossibility since granting a House a Targaryen bride can also give them dragon-riding grandchildren.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Joanna treats Daenerys with all the respect and affection due to an aunt and consoles her when finds out that Dany is barren. Dany quickly comes to love her.
  • Bond Creatures: Ghost and Rhaegal are this for Joanna. She can see through Ghosts eyes while thousands of miles away and she immediately tames Rhaegal with her warging talents.
  • Broken Ace: Both Aegon and Joanna. Aegon has been raised to be the perfect king and he has the skills to match but he also has had a very lonely life on the run. Joanna was given a semi noble's education and excelled at it but she also was treated with disdain and hatred by pretty much everyone her whole life.
  • Brainy Brunette: Joanna has dark hair and is very, very intelligent.
  • Broken Pedestal: Joanna had a very high opinion of Tyrion for how fairly and cordially he treated her in Winterfell and Kings Landing. Then while warging into Ghost she was privy to his conversations with Aegon. Not knowing who Joanna actually is, Tyrion expressed contempt over Aegon's desire to marry Joanna and make her his Queen. He advised the young king to marry Sansa instead who was a true born daughter of Winterfell. It cause Joanna to lose quite a good deal of respect for Tyrion and resent Sansa even more.
  • Burn the Witch!: Aegon and Daenerys decide to do this to Melisandre of Ashai after the woman tries to convince Aegon to kill Joanna as part of the Azor Ahai prophecy.
  • Cats Are Magic: Somehow Balerion is able to identify Joanna as a close relative of his owner Rhaenys.
  • Cats Are Mean: Balerion is famously ill tempered and unfriendly to the point where he is known as the Mean Cat but he is a sweetheart to Joanna.
  • Daddy's Girl: Joanna toward Ned. Ned never could bring himself to deny her anything, something that fueled Catelyn's and Sansa's hatred toward Joanna.
  • Defiled Forever: Joanna views herself as such after sleeping with Aegon before leaving to find Daenerys.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Aegon latches to Joanna the moment they are introduced and very easily falls in love with her.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Arianne Martell remains a petty, greedy, immature schemer that tried to drive a wedge between Aegon and Joanna and oust her as Queen. Joanna retaliates by convincing Doran that Arianne is a political liability and an Inadequate Inheritor
  • Dragon Rider: Joanna bonds instantly with Rhaegal, making him behave, much to Dany's astonishment.
  • Elephant in the Living Room: Lyanna for Aegon and Joanna, also for the entirety of Dorne.
  • Friend Versus Lover: Daenerys and Aegon over Joanna. They manage to come to an accord for her sake eventually.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Robb does not marry Jayne Westerling but Roslin Frey. Arya reaches the rest of her family safely and ends up married to Robin Arryn. Sansa is removed from King's Landing by the Tyrells and end up marrying Willas.
  • Generation Xerox: Aegon falls for a dark haired, unconventional girl just like his father. Joanna falls for a silver haired, purple eyed prince just like her mother. Lambshaded when a delusional and insane Cersei mistakes them for Rhaegar and Lyanna. Although if Ashara is to be believed, when it comes to personality, Aegon is Elia's son and Joanna Rhaegar's daughter.
  • Green-Eyed Monster:
    • Aegon and Daenerys compete for Joanna's attention and affections and are displeased when one gets to spend more time with her than the other.
    • When Tyrion advised Aegon to marry Sansa, Joanna was deeply unhappy, not wanting Catelyn's double to become Aegon queen. While Joanna does not like the idea of Aegon marrying anyone that is not her, she is utterly vehement about him marry the favourite daughter of the woman that made her life a hell.
    • Joanna is not happy when she finds out that another Stark bastard, Allyria Dayne had an idyllic childhood in Starfall.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Ned Stark was under the impression that Ashara wanted to keep Joanna to make her Viserys' queen when Aegon was still alive.
  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Joanna and Sansa mutually loathe each other.
  • Hate at First Sight: Aegon and Daenerys detest each other at first sight. Dany for her part believes that Aegon is a Blackfyre despite Aegon having Rhoynish features.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Arianne Martell is shortsighted, impulsive, immature and promiscuous. Joanna has little trouble convincing Doran to marry her off to some distant lord, effectively disinheriting her in favour of the much more capable Quentyn.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Joanna has a very bad case of it due to her upbringing. She fully believes that Aegon will stop loving her if she is not useful.
  • Hate Sink: Catelyn Tully was especially cruel to Joanna. Causing the secret Targaryen princes to fantasize burning her alive. Aegon also detests her for the way she treated her sister. The rest of the Targaryen contigent is not terribly fond of the current living Starks as a result.
  • Hope Spot: Sansa is rescued from King's Landing by the Tyrells and they marry her to Willas. Unfortunately for her they only did this in hope to inherit Winterfell through her. Then it turned out that the rumours of Robb's death were greatly exaggerated. The Tyrells then start looking at her askance since she lost a great deal of her value.
  • It Runs in the Family:
    • Whenever Catelyn Tully upsed Joanna with her cruelty, Joanna fantasized about burning the woman alive. Joanna is horrified by this fact once she finds out that Aerys is her grandfather.
    • Aegon and Daenerys promptly decide to burn Melisandre alive shortly after meeting her. A frustrated Joanna exclaims that they might as well Burn Them All!
  • In Spite of a Nail: A great deal of the narrative stays the same. Ned is executed, Arya escapes and Sansa is made a hostage. Tyrion still ends up on the Shy Maiden. Oberyn Martell dies. Bran ends up beyond the Wall
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Rhaenys was famously one. Joanna end up with her sister's cat as well.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: The only thing that Aegon and Dany agree on is to keep Joanna in the dark regarding the prophecy of the Prince That Was Promised/Azor Ahai.
  • Mama Bear: Daenerys toward Joanna. She threatens to burn Aegon alive if he dares to as much as hurt a single hair on her niece's head.
  • Moment Killer: Aegon and Joanna enjoy a rare, stress free day out watching a play on their ancestor The Rogue Prince and shopping at the bazaar while in Pentos. Then a merchant has to ruin it by telling them that the jewelry they are admiring is made with gold from Casterly Rock.
  • The Mourning After: Joanna sadly notes that Jon Connington still mourns her father Rhaegar.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Joanna remembers that Tyrion was kind to her when she was a bastard. When she is revealed to be a Princess she returns the favour, treating the exiled lording with respect and fulfilling his childhood dream of meeting a dragon by taking him to see Rhaegal.
  • Not So Above It All: Joanna does her best to be as kind and fair as she can but she is not immune to pettiness and has a vindictive streak. She is viciously pleased that Sansa ended up marrying a hideous dwarf and a cripple, while Joanna herself married a gorgeous, healthy King.
  • Odd Friendship: Joanna and Doran come to appreciate and understand each other despite their differences and the ghosts of Lyanna, Elia and Rhaenys between them
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Robb is reported as dead, causing the Tyrells to rescue Sansa and marry her to Willas to obtain the North.
  • The Resenter:
    • Joanna is deeply unhappy with how she was treated while growing up as a bastard. Despite her genuine love for Aegon, a great deal of her desire to be his wife comes from wanting to be Queen and reign over the people that treated her badly.
    • Tyrion warns Joanna that Sansa will become this toward her. Joanna did not have to suffer under Joffrey and Cersei, and she is a queen married to a handsome, able bodied king. To add the cherry on top she also has a dragon.
  • So Proud of You: Jon Connington bursts with pride towards Joanna when she returns with Daenerys, three dragons and an army for Aegon's cause. He is especially tickled pink over the fact that Joanna's dragon is Rhaegal and tells her that she truly is her father's daughter.
  • The Smart Guy: Aegon, to Joanna's surprise and dismay, since she viewed herself as the Brains and him as the Brawn.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Doran and Joanna play a lot of cyvasse games together when Aegon and Joanna arrive in Dorne. Joanna never fails to beat Doran.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Aegon, he spoils Ghost with rare cuts of meat and belly rubs in order to endear himself to Joanna. He also figures out to disband the Faith Militant without bloodshed by pointing out that the Baratheon rule is illegal since Aegon automatically became King of the Seven Kingdoms when Aerys died and Joanna became Princess of Dragonstone the moment she was born.
  • Spotting the Thread: Rhaenys' ill-tempered tomcat Balerion turns as sweet as honey for Joanna. Varys witnesses this and he immediately realizes who her true father is.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Joanna resembles Rhaegar and Rhaella. Varys realizes who she is after a good, close look at her and Jon Connington always gazes at her wistfully. Word of God confirms that she has Rhaegar's eyes, a dark indigo that her dark hair camouflages as dark gray/brown.
    • It is hinted that Jaime Lannister knows who her real father is due to this resemblance. After taking a good, close look at her face while dancing he advises her to stay away from Robert. Later Tyrion tells Joanna that upon escaping from the Starks Jaime asked about her. Something that surprises Joanna, since legitimate highborns barely even notice bastards, much lest remember them several years after dancing with them once.
    • Given that Balerion the Black Cat immediately loved Joanna when the last person he did so was Rhaenys, it is very likely that the two half sisters share similarities in scent at the very least.
  • Thicker Than Water: Illyrio points this out to Joanna when she frets that Aegon might hate her for being Lyanna's daughter. Despite having no love for Sansa, Joanna still wants to do right by her for Uncle Ned's sake and partially to rub it in her face. Joanna also worries a lot about Robb despite being convinced that Robb does not care much about her.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Arianne Martell plots against Joanna, who at that point is the dragon rider with the most control over her dragon.
  • The Un-Favourite: Catelyn treated Joanna will utter contempt. Robb also showed a lot more affection, patience and kindness toward Sansa and little toward Joanna.
  • Wham Episode: Melisandre of Ashai is brought in chains in front of the Targaryens. She starts to tell Aegon of the Prince That Was Promised prophecy. Including the part where he would have go kill his wife, aka Joanna.
